We had an amazing morning out with Partnership Middle School’s Vet Camp kids today! They had great questions for us and were very excited to play with Michelle, a sweet mama dog that we picked up a few weeks ago.

It is starting to be warmer outside and with the warmer weather we are expecting to start seeing more snakes. They will be coming out to eat and get warm. A snake will normally try to stay away from people and our pets. That being said, we understand that some people aren’t comfortable with them and we are happy to come safely remove them from any property in the city. We have all the equipment needed to safely relocate the snake so it doesn’t pose a risk to us or anyone else.

Pictured here is a Speckled King Snake that we removed from a property this month. He had some severely stuck shed, making him more defensive than normal, but we quickly got it removed and sent him on his way.

We’ve been very busy this week with little babies that have been running loose. They all wanted to say hey to everyone and remind you to make sure to keep your furry friends warm with this cold snap coming in tonight. Our city ordinance states that if there is a national weather service alert that your pets must be brought in or safely contained away from the severe weather.

Today is the start of a cold front sweeping through our area. Like people, cats and dogs also have risks of frostbite and hypothermia due to the below freezing temperatures and high winds we are expecting this upcoming weekend. It will be life threateningly cold and here are some tips to help keep your pets safe.

If at all possible, please take your pets indoors, especially at night, and only allow them outside to use the restroom. If you cannot bring your pets inside, please provide them a dry, insulated shelter that has a solid floor, a roof, and three sides. The Oktibbeha County Humane Society located at 510 Industrial Park Road is passing out free straw to those in need.

Winter Safety Tips:
⁃ Give your pets extra food and clean fresh water.
⁃ Get some insulation from Lowe’s or Walmart to ensure your outside pets stay warm in their enclosure.
⁃ Place straw within their enclosure and around it to prevent moisture.
⁃ Honk your horn to ensure no cats or kittens are hiding within your engine to keep warm.

Mississippi law (statute 97-41-16, section 2a) states that adequate shelter be required for pets.
The Starkville City Ordinance’s also read that if any extreme weather conditions are issued by the National Weather Service and an animal is not provided access to adequate shelter against the weather, then it is in violation and will be enforced. This is considered animal abuse.

Animal Control and patrol units will be patrolling throughout the city to check on any animals we see. Call us at 662-769-2728 if you have a question or any concerns about an animal near you.

SEVERE WINTER WEATHER ALERT: ARE YOUR PETS SAFE?

The weather will drop below freezing late Thursday and remain through Monday. Wind chill will be -17 degrees. These temps will be life-threatening to pets left outside without proper shelter. Please make plans to bring your outdoor pets inside your home or garage. If they must stay out, make sure they have access to a dry, insulated shelter with water and food. Water will freeze, so be sure to replenish it often. Styrofoam coolers and large, covered plastic containers with insulated sheets make great feral cat houses. You can buy small rolls/sheets of insulation and coolers at Lowe’s and Walmart.

FREE straw is available at the Starkville Animal Shelter, 510 Industrial Park Rd, Starkville. Come by and grab what you need to put in your pet shelter. Blankets will freeze.

The Starkville Animal Shelter has a limited number of dog/cat houses for those who are unable to provide weather safe shelter. Please come by tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec 21 between 11:00 am – 5:00 pm to pick one up. It is first-come, first-served.

As an owner, you are legally responsible for the animals in your care. Please be kind and make sure your pets are safe.

Today, we honor those who have served their country and their communities. Happy Veterans Day!

Many of our team members served in the past or are still serving. A number of them have served a minimum of one overseas deployment spanning from Operation Desert Storm to present times.

Those still on traditional guard or reserve drill status stand ready for their next mission.

Thank you for your service.

We have been contacted for two squirrels already this year that needed help. We wanted to share our information from last year that explains what to do if you find a baby squirrel.

Squirrels have two baby seasons. One in spring and one in the fall, so finding them this time of year is not uncommon. Especially after heavy rains or strong wind. When it is impossible to reunite a juvenile squirrel with it's mother, we ask that you do the flowing to ensure the health and safety of these adorable creatures.
1. Never EVER feed the animal, unless instructed by a licensed rehabber. If you feed a dehydrated animal (domestic or wild) it's chances of survival are very slim.
2. Put it in a crate with a heating pad set on low/medium. Make sure they have room to move off the heating pad if they get too hot.
3. Call Animal Control for the number to a species specific licensed rehabilitator. Our state has a "Good Samaritan Law" that gives you 24 hours to contact a licensed rehabber and schedule a time to get the animal to them.
4. If you find wildlife in distress that may be in need of veterinary care, we also have a list of veterinarians who are able to help. Contrary to popular belief, a veterinarian can treat wildlife in our state and rehabilitate them under the direct supervision of a licensed rehabilitator.

If you follow these simple steps, it will ensure the animal you find will have the best chance of survival and be released back into the wild where they belong.

We’ve, unfortunately, had quiet a few of these in the past few days but all these were from today. A pet is a life time commitment and should never just be dumped. The little puppies were lucky enough to be dumped close to someone’s house that cared for them, fed them, and their mama until we could arrive. Jellybean, the sweet German Shepherd we found, wasn’t as lucky. However, she was lucky enough for a concerned citizen to hear her crying in the woods so we could come help her get untangled and safe. They are all safe now at Oktibbeha County Humane Society.
