Update on Steele! His training is progressing well and he is having so many more wins lately! I could not be more proud of him!
When he first showed up, he was very easily startled by a situation change such as a new person walking in/out, sudden noises, or anything that changed the energy level of the room. He would often react to this by barking and fussing as a way to express his discomfort. Thankfully, he showed no indication of a desire to attack or bite in these moments, which told me this guy was in need of some confidence boosting and learning how to go with the flow.
Because my pup Luffy has been through so much with me and has learned how to deal with a variety of changes and new things entering his life, he has been a great help for multiple dogs by being a confidence buddy, and he was able to do the same for Steele. Monkey see monkey do, so to speak.
Luffy has helped Steele see that there is a different way to behave, and that calmer reactions get more rewards. He has also showed him that new things can be fun instead of scary, and that new people can be nice and respectful.
Because of how well Steele has been progressing, the boys got to tag along as we ran some pet friendly errands to Tractor Supply and PetSmart this weekend. They got so many nice compliments on their behavior and how sweet they were! Luffy has always loved meeting new people, but Steele really impressed me by being super receptive to greeting a few strangers and getting some pets from them. He was enthusiastic and sweet, and completely non-reactive to both people and dogs!
He still has two more weeks of training to go, and I know he's going to continue to grow his abilities so much more in that time!
