Sweet Bellamy has had her puppies . It was a long night and an early morning vet visit for a little extra help . We have four beautiful babies, all healthy and vigorous. A special thanks to Dr. Grayson and Lauren Gerhardt and Dr. Jeff Geyser .

Ever since we moved to the farm I have been exploring the pasture looking for plants that have medicinal or culinary value … this property had been largely empty and unimproved for several years and the pasture had been allowed to lay fallow and become a native nursery for all kinds of plants … this is yarrow . It grows natively in our pasture and I have transplanted and cultivated several of these plants into gardens . This is my first drying and infusing effort here at the farm. I have included reliable source link with the value and uses of yarrow medically and as a culinary herb .

We have big and exciting news ! Sweet Bellamy is pregnant again . Ultrasound showed what we believe is five healthy puppies. She is due sometime the end of this month . Message if you are interested in placing a deposit and reserving a puppy .

This post has been long in coming … Months in fact,and it will be long …
Long because of the emotion that I cannot seem to shed and the hope that perhaps this post will bring some consideration to bear on this subject .. I am angry , and sad , I feel genuine grief from loss and as I consider this it just did not have to happen .. in this post you will see photos of our land guardian dogs and our people guardian dogs … I have decided not to show the photos that I took of what is left of my livestock after other dogs which were running amuck devastated our entire buck population … Yes , I said our entire dwarf Nigerian buck population . They are gone . Killed and left laying in the pasture by dogs allowed to run amuck .. dogs that kill not because they are hungry or in need but just for sport , because they have not been properly trained or supervised . And, yes I am angry . The photos in the post are of our four dogs .. all large breed guardian dogs .. we have two Pyrenees males in the doe, kid pasture and two Bernese mountain dogs that live in the house .. about 3 am Sunday morning we were all awake and working … the dogs and me … the pasture was under attack by two large breed dogs that were determined to kill whatever they could catch . I will save you the long story … the short of it is we were able to save the does and kids .. between the extra electric wire and multiple layers of fencing and the guardian dogs, the does and kids remained safe … but the bucks which I typically worry less about .. some of them were even horned did not survive .. these dogs were so determine that they even came after me . Had it not been for the dogs and the electric wire I would not have been safe ..we had already lost three bucklings to an attack in early February .. one of the neighbors thought it was dogs but I thought it might have been coyotes because it was breeding season . This time there is no doubt what was raiding the pasture. It was dogs .. unattended, and allowed to run amuck and kill. The went over a five foot wire mesh fence to get to the bucks . It was pitch black and they had already tried to come through the fence to get at the does and babies while I stood in the middle of the flock … they were undeterred by me but my dogs worked hard and they worked together . I have never been so amazed as I have this year to see our pasture boys become such good protectors. Shep even took charge of the babies as twins were being born during our kidding season . The first baby to drop he took charge of and shepherded to a shelter and lay next to it while the doe was birthing the second kid . I want to paint a vivid picture for you of the difference between dogs that protect and defend, that are well trained and know their job versus dogs that are allowed to run wild and create destruction and havoc in their wake . The two different types were clearly on display in our pasture at 3 am Saturday morning and I am still cleaning up the carnage .. if you decide you want a dog then train it .. control it and do not allow it to become a neighborhood hazard to your farm neighbors and their livestock . If you don’t want to do that then don’t get a dog .

We have been so busy I have not posted about our new arrivals . Meet bacon bits and sweetie pie,named by the grandchildren. These are Kuhn Kuhn pigs. I once swore I would never raise hogs again .. but these girls are fantastic . They are currently in the garden doing all the work of rooting out the last of the grass, roots, and all where I have not planted .. We could not be happier with this addition and the grandbabies love them

This sweet guy made into the world right at chore time tonight . He is so beautiful and I always want to keep every little thing born here. Nevertheless , he is for sale . Pictured with him is his mother Celeste .. her udder is just gorgeous and he will carry those good milking genes … message for price . Both parents are ADGA registered and he will be also .

We have been so busy these last few weeks the nursery pens are full and the chick nursery is too ! We will have weaned doelings and bujclings for sale in a few weeks . If you are looking for a bottle feeding kid we could accommodate that also .

Turkey laid her first ever egg today … it is such a pretty thing ! One of the most fun things about owning fowl and poultry is the eggs .. We have everything from the very small bantam egg to the Easter egger and Olive egger eggs.. now we have speckled turkey eggs and giant goose eggs …

Ecclesiastes4:9 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. Maria came and we built shelters and hauled bedding, and hay and feed and we harvested as much produce as we could and covered the rest … we finished wet and cold and satisfied we had done all we could before the blast of winter set in . Now we are tucked in listening to the wind howl with a toasty fire .

Growing my own herbs in the garden is one of my favorite things about gardening … it has been so hot this summer . Even so my herbs have continued to survive and this week when I found myself at the end of patience with this triple digit heat I harvested and stuffed the first turkey of this fall season … granted the holiday was Labor Day and unprecedented early Turkey but it did lift the spirits.

Wisdom from the wee milk maid . Being a farmer is hard … and on the drive home she was planning her next trip here to spend more time with me hopefully in the snow .😂 She had such a sense of accomplishment and she knows where her food comes from . She ate goat cheese and green beans and butter that she miked and churned herself . Folks children need to know where their food comes from .

This child ….Four years old …. She got Celeste out of her stall, onto the milk stand, cleaned her udder and proceeded to start milking ….I finished the milking because Celeste is giving about half a gallon of milk currently which. Is a lot for little hands … she then took her down off the stand and put her back in her stall with her baby . Our smallest grand has come to help in the farm this week and she has begun her week with all her favorite things . She is so much like her mamma .
