Decided to make blackberry cobbler with my first picking of berries. It's super yummy but next time I'll bake it for a bit before adding the blackberries to keep them from sinking to the bottom.

First time picking enough blackberries from my bushes to do more than have a handful to eat like last year. This is just a small fraction of what is on them, that rest need to ripen yet. The plants were put in three years ago and are doing fantastic this year. However, blackberry bushes are on a whole different level of evil compared to raspberries. Now to figure out what kind of yummy treats to make with them. I have more then enough homemade jellies and jams in the canning cellar.

Another first today! Harvested the first of my calendula flowers to dry. I love the blossoms in my garden so it's hard cutting them off. But these gorgeous flowers will serve a better purpose once they are dry.

Busy has become the new norm with the garden in full swing. I picked a bunch of peas, more broccoli and even more zucchini and summer squash. I also picked a 5 gallon bucket of beets. I blanched enough of the tender tops for two meals, made 5 pints of pickled beets and from the water used to cook the beets, I made 8 jelly jars of beet jelly. I love being able to have one thing from the garden make so made different things. Kinda like zucchini and summer squash but send help, I'm getting overrun.

Since it hasn't rained in a few days and the temps are much cooler, I decided it was a good time to trim the tomatoes, zucchini and summer squash plants. Tomatoes are all done and half the zucchini and summer squash got a much needed trim. I would have finished them today but a mosquito decided my bad ear was a nice treat. I sprayed everywhere with bug spray, knowing I was going into a jungle but never through about my ears. If it but me anywhere else it would have been fine. But the swelling, or should say attempted swelling and the heat caused vertigo which ended my gardening for the day. Garden looks so much better already!

The first of many batches of zucchini chips! My plants have gone crazy with all the rain, they are at least 4 feet tall and about 6 feet wide. Going forward, I'll need to wear pants and long sleeves to be able to get in to pick them. I used 5 zucchini out of the bowl for this batch and it's still full. I plan to make zucchini muffins in the morning and freeze the rest for future use.

And in all my years growing zucchini I've never seen a double one. I seen the flower when it was in bloom and I was hoping it would get pollinated to see what would happen. I got to pick it today.

A bit late on posting this but the other night we had make your own alfredo night. It was very yummy but I've been trying to catch up on dishes since then. My stove has never been this packed.

Lately, it's either raining or hot and humid. I've been trying to work around both to get caught up on things. This year has been nothing but continual mud which has made for an interesting time trying to get things done. With having sandy soil that usually drains right away to lots of mud, it's been a struggle.

Yesterday with the rain, I blanched and froze a bunch of kale to use over winter in soups and stews. I only have 4 plants but they are growing faster then I can keep up because of the weather. Found a zucchini that I missed a few days ago. Got enough to make a double batch of bread and freeze enough for another batch. I also had to mend one of my turkeys, who somehow managed to break its wing.

Today, I headed out early to feed everyone and to redress the broken wing on the turkey before it got to warm. I started to clean up the endless mud in the run for my chickens. I moved the last of the chicks out finally. But that was after fixing the ground in the bottom of their cage that's inside the run for the chickens. Watching them walk in the sand for the first time was comical, they kept running back into the carrier.

On a positive note my yucca plants are loving the weather. One of them is taller then what I can reach and the bottom flowers are almost even with the top of my head.

5 gallon buckets should come with a warning label or I need bubble wrap. Made for a long day of trying to get things done since it was the first thing I managed to do this morning. To my defense, the bucket was very wet after all the rain which is why it slipped. But I'm one step closer to getting the new to me rabbit cages set up in my rabbitry after my setback. Two days ago, I pressure washed the cages so they were ready to be moved in. I think I ended up being dirtier then the cages by the time i was done. I'll be fixing a few cages with ones I no longer will be using because they have been well used.

If you get a bit queezy from blood, please don't look at the last picture.

With 2-4" of rain expected in the next 24-48 hours, I figured it was time to get my red wine cap bed done. I got cut a bit short from adding the last of the mulch because of the rain but it's at least ready for the rain. I'm super excited to see how it does in a few months and what I'll get for a harvest.

My garden has expanded every year! I can't believe how much its grown over the years. Please don't mine the weeds, it's a work in progress with the heat and rain. Sadly, I can't expand the current garden much more because of my sheep pasture now and the greenhouse just behind the shop. But I have been working on my orchard on the other side of the property.

I so love my wisteria and it's loaded with flowers this year. I'm so happy it's thriving after it was crushed two years ago when the pine trees were finally cut down. They were trying to keep the tree from falling into my flowerbed but that wasn't how it played out.

Since it rained this afternoon, I decided to chop up a bunch of the onions I got this morning to freeze. I bought a 10 pound bag and got through about 4 pounds before my eyes couldn't take anymore. Thankfully, it only took me 10 minutes from start to finish. I shake the bag as it freezes to keep it from forming a solid chunk. Now I can just grab a handful whenever I need them.

My rhubarb is insane this year! Made a batch of freezer jam, 2 pans of oatmeal rhubarb bars, rhubarb BBQ sauce and a batch of strawberry rhubarb leather (think fruit roll up). All of it was so good. The fruit leather has no sugar added, just the fruit. Will be making another pan of oatmeal rhubarb bars again tomorrow since the rhubarb is ready to be picked a fourth time already.

With everything growing so well this year because of the abundance of rain, I've been preserving earlier then ever. I chopped a bunch of chives to freeze. I saved a bunch of the blossoms to make a batch of chive wine vinegar for salads. I've dehydrated two batches of my larger walking onions and have another two batches to go. But we need more then a day or two of no rain now so I can start weeding my garden instead of playing in the mud.

Another rainy day but still a busy one. In between the rain, I was able to get all of my tomato plants into the garden. While it was raining, I washed the inside of all the windows, did dishes, a load of laundry and made amish rhubarb bars. They were so easy to make and so amazingly delicious!

Today was exhausting but very thankful to the friends that helped me shear Bonnie and Clyde today. One friend lent me her goat stand which was a blessing for my Shetland sheep. Two other friends with years of experience shearing sheep brought their clippers and sheared them while I calmed my babies and watched. Being my first year of shearing I wanted to watch and learn before getting a pair of clippers and doing it myself.

I only had one minor mishap while trying to catch Clyde to get him into the stand. He caught my leg with his horn as he ran past me. Thankfully once he was in the stand he calmed down and loved his ear rubs and attention. I'll get after pictures tomorrow, today was a bit to crazy.

Had a busy but productive day even with the rain. Made two loaves each of rhubarb and banana bread today. Wanted to make spaghetti for supper but realized I was out of sauce, so I grabbed several things from the pantry and made the sauce from what I had on hand. It turned out amazing! Now to finally relax.

Busy day! Got two new pieces of lawn art placed. Now to finish weeding one flowerbed and finish planting the other. Also got three bottle lights done for around the patio and the sidewalk. 13 more to go.

04/28/2024

Put my horse to work today, in the rain, to move my new homestead lawn art! Brought four pieces home yesterday, two need a little TLC before they get placed, the other two are in place. I'll post pictures once everything is situated.

I love having a meal that was mostly grown at home! My hydroponic lettuce needed to be cut back, the sprouts I was started were ready and hard boiled two dozen of my duck eggs. Just finished my salad off with some dried cranberries and sunflower seeds.

Now for it to get warm enough to get my garden planted and enjoy so many more fresh goodies.
