We are so grateful to have such a wonderful group of vets Sequist Animal Hospital so close by! 💛 Disco visited Dr. Emily Bond today to figure out why her feathers aren’t coming in as quickly as we’d like and Dr. Bond was as helpful as she always is with our girls. 👩‍⚕️

She doesn’t have mites (yay!) and we have been prescribed a steroid to reduce the redness from being picked. Hopefully we will see feather growth on our big gorgeous lady soon. (Peep her weight - 6.4 lbs makes her mama’s big thicc girl!) Tomorrow, we’ll show you how to administer oral medication to a chicken. In the meantime, thank a vet. 💛💛💛

Myth: Chickens assume this posture because they’re scared. 🐓 👀

Fact: Absolutely not! 💛 This adorable pose, which I call “egg crouch” but which is properly known as the squat, is a submissive posture but not a fearful one. Louise here is submitting to me as the head of her flock, like when dogs roll over to show their bellies. If we had a rooster, Louise would assume this position to allow him to mate. Hens may also showcase this behaviour when they’re on a clutch of eggs as a protective stance. This stance is a great sign pullets are about to come into lay, or that hens taking a laying break may soon produce. What a sweet little mama she is!

Come on, Ouelle! If you want lunch you better get in there and don’t be afraid to push 😅 Our girls are fed three times a day. Blue Seal Extra Egg is a staple here, and in the winter, they usually get either scrambled eggs or oatmeal as a hot side. They are well looked after!
