Horses are obligate nasal breathers. They can only breathe through their nostrils. This is because of a structure called the soft palate, which completely separates the upper part of the airway above the mouth. This blocks off the pathway between the mouth and the lungs so that food doesn't accidentally get brought into the lungs. 🐴
