Have you ever had a hard time describing the length you want? I now have this chart hanging on my wall. You can point to the length you would like!
Keep in mind, the greater the length, the more maintenance it will require either by brushing at home, or scheduling more frequent baths or grooms. Coat type also influences length between professional grooming. Some dogs with course hair types can go 8 weeks between grooming without becoming matted, while others with softer, more curly hair types must be kept on a 4 week schedule to prevent matting. The longer the length, it will take more product and time, so the greater the cost at the groomer.
A 1" fluffy cut should ideally be professionally groomed every 4 weeks.
A 5/8", 1/2" length can usually go 5 - 6 weeks between appointments without becoming matted.
A 1/8", 1/4" or 3/8" shaved short style can stretch out haircuts to 6 - 12 weeks apart.
Other factors to include in choosing your dog's professional grooming schedule are toenails trimming and ear cleaning. Toenails should be trimmed ideally every 4 weeks. Allowing long lengths of time between nail trimming can lead to long, painful nails or broken nails. Some dogs need frequent ear cleaning to prevent ear infections. Some dogs benefit from ear cleaning on a regular 4-8 weeks schedule. Meeting in the middle, many people choose an every 6 week grooming schedule.
A dog's skin cells reproduce every 21 days and it is healthy for their skin to remove the old, dead, flaking skin cells through washing and blow drying on a monthly basis.
I will gladly help you choose the best length, style and grooming schedule based on you and your dog's lifestyle, your style preferences and brushing abilities and desired price point.
Dog grooming is an unregulated industry. That means anyone can pick up a pair of clippers and call themselves a dog groomer. They do not need any training, certification or license. Unfortunately, this means a bad haircut is the least of a dog owner's worries. It is up to each individual pet groomer to seek out training and continuing education.
Unfortunately, I occasionally see use of improper equipment. One of these things sometimes misused are belly support bands. Belly support bands are used to help teach dogs to remain standing in place, help prevent a dog from stepping off the side of the table and falling, and can provide some support to help them stand. They should be made from flexible material, preferably nylon fabric, and wide. I also prefer to use a cushion on my belly support band. The wider the support, the less pressure focused on one area of their sensitive abdomen or private area. Thin, rubber coated metal loops can apply a lot of pressure, and are uncomfortable, potentially painful, and can even cause injury. Belly support bands should be loose and comfortable and allow the dog to stand in a natural position with a level or natural top line. Sometimes they may be secured a little more snug to provide the dog with more support. They should never be so tight as to cause the dog to stand with their rear end abnormally high, nor dig-in to their vulnerable abdomen.
**Picture of misuse is not my own***, but taken from another groomer's public page after a client sent me the picture of their bruised dog after taking it to another groomer, and I looked for how or why the dog could have been so badly bruised while in their care and found dozens of pictures of improper equipment being used as belly support bands and improper use, stringing the dogs up by their abdomens.
The correct use picture is my own. This is where I purchased my belly support band. The same Etsy store, GroomLoop, also makes and sells the cushion that fits over it: https://www.etsy.com/listing/743420544/standaid-belly-support-strap-23-patterns?ref=share_v4_lx

It's a red doodle kind of day! ❤️
You should never, ever purchase a puppy online through these puppy websites or a pet store. Amish puppy mills use puppy brokers that list them online and are the middle man.
There are currently 67,019 puppies for sale on Puppies.com with more than 15,000 active breeder profiles. Most of those puppies are coming from breeders in Texas, California, Florida, Missouri and Kansas.
Our team is currently doing an audit of all of the breeders who sell through Puppies.com to determine if they hold the proper licensing for their state or federally so we can file all of the complaints. We will share a short list of some of the more concerning facilities that sell through this site as well. While that massive project will take time, we will continue to share pieces of information that we learn with you all!
Please do your part in helping us put an end to the cruel puppy mill industry by reminding your friends, family and coworkers that it is easier to find a puppy mill online than it is a responsible breeder. Do your research before you buy, read the inspection reports, read the reviews, visit the parent dogs in person and don't forget to reach out to your favorite researchers at Bailing Out Benji with any questions or concerns! Don't forget that there are amazing animals waiting for you at your local rescue or shelter too- including many purebred and made-up mixed breeds!
If you are able to support our work, please consider making a donation! We are a small organization that isn't afraid to take on big projects like this, if it means we can discover and put an end to inhumane breeding operations.

I LOVE watching dogs gain confidence and blossom! ❤️ Freya is a puppy mill rescue, was terribly neglected and didn't know anything about being groomed before finding her wonderful home. Freya used to shake and hide behind her mom. She's a mama's girl, and still does not love initially being left but willingly follows me now to the tub. She used to be so scared of the blow dryer that we had to make alternative plans to let her dry by fan while resting in a kennel while I continued to help her with her fear. Today I was able to dry her all the way on the table without her trembling and shaking. She also never used to take treats from me and would sit in a corner and wait for her mom to come get her. Just look at this sweet girl now!! ❤️❤️❤️
Let's play again! But this time you won't have to wait very long for the answer. Was your guess right or wrong?
Training Thursday! The most common time we see AGGRESSIVE or fearful behavior when grooming dogs is for TOENAIL trims. They may flail, urinate, defecate, scratch, bark, growl, or bite. Sometimes their behavior is so severe we are unable to safely trim, and they need sedated at the vet in order to trim their nails. Every dog will need its toenails trimmed, so it's important to train them when young to accept and tolerate foot handling! I didn't recommend owners use regular nail trimmers unless they are very confident in identifying and avoiding the quick, or the blood supply in the center of the nail which will bleed if the toenail is trimmed too short. It can take just one bad, painful experience for some dogs to write off toenails trims for life. Instead I recommend using a file between nail trims at the groomer, or getting them accustomed to a pet toenail Dremel at home!
Training Thursday! Look at how smart Blake is! His foster mom has put the work in training him in basic obedience and tricks. He is so sweet, gives the best sweet gentle kisses, and loves people! He's very food/treat motivated, very smart, eager to learn! He will be available for adoption through Zesty Misfits Fostering
This poor baby came from a puppy mill. He was so severely neglected. He's now safe thanks to JAR-Justice Animal Rescue but will need a foster home!
Tonight was a late night whittling away and peeling matting off of dogs from JAR-Justice Animal Rescue who were recent puppy mill pulls. Stay tuned for their photos! They are looking for foster homes!!!
Over the weekend Annie May Rassman earned her last Qualifying run to earn her ACT 2 Jumpers virtual title!
I might do the fast running, but make no mistake, Mark puts in the work. He has weave poles at home and has been working with Annie diligently at home this summer and I give him the credit for her weave poles! It's so fun to watch her bebop through the poles!
