Also today the youngsters graduated the trench of terror!!
This Obstacle gives these colts a ton of confidence! Once they master this terrifying trench you won’t have any trouble getting them in a trailer, crossing a creek and much more. The main thing I use it for however is getting over their head. The biggest issue with first rides is the colt has never seen a human above their head. So if your colts not prepared properly what happens? They get tight an as soon as u bend them around an they catch u out of that eye the rodeo is on! A few days in the trench gets them used to seeing u up there!!
Another colt leaving today.
As any person with any horse sense at all knows. 30 days training with any colt is basically just a “warm up” for the years it’s going to take to make a ”finished” horse out of them.
Ideally as somebody that starts colts you want them for far longer than 30 days but part of the game is understanding and working with different clients. A lot of people can’t afford more than 30 days on a colt and as a trainer we can’t do it for free either. So for me the key is communicating. The client needs to understand what a realistic 30 days looks like on a colt and even that sometimes Isn’t a guarantee depending on the horse.
You don’t make horses in months you make them in years!
So as this nice colt leaves after a short 30 days he is
-patient
-respectful on the ground and under saddle
-freely stands to be tacked up and mounted
-soft through his head and neck, shoulders, ribs and hind end.
- walk, trots, canters on a loose rein.
- stops when you quit riding and say whoa
- backs when apply pressure
- stands quite to be dismounted
- and lastly stands quite to be washed down
After 30 days on a colt these are my basic requirements. Sometimes they meet them, sometimes they don’t and sometimes they Exceed them. Either way it is important for the client to understand that after 30 days you will not have a “kid broke” “bomb proof” horse and that training will have to continue at home or you will be back to square 1.
Thanks for reading and please let us know if you have a colt you need started!

Something about the combination of cool mornings, freshly drug arena dirt, and the smell of a horse! 😍 Needs to be a candle. 😂
Timing, feel, and balance wouldn’t ya know it are 3 of the main factors that make up you as a horseman. The better those three particular things are the better horseman u become.
A good way to see where you are is jumping on bareback! It is the most unforgiving test of all. You know when you fail because you’ll be a little dirtier.😂😂
Often times we like to blame our horses for performance Flaws that were more than likely ours due to bad timing no feel and off balance. or we come up with some excuse why our horses are sore.
Before we do either of those things, go catch up prancer and throw a leg over without a saddle and see how long it takes before u pick yourself up off the ground.
Or if your not comfy with that, next time you are riding in whatever discipline you ride. Have somebody record it. Play it back later in slow motion! You will probably we surprised.
Bronc mare.
Voice over. 🔊Learning happened today! It’s not about how fast I can get it done but how I can make them think it’s there idea to be good. Its training to me not forcing. Week an a half into the bronc mare. Anyone need a garden plowed?
Little feed help tonight.
1st week end results on 6 yr old Ex bronc mare.
Grab your 🍿 and kick back!! This is a long one! I could never be a film editor because I hate cutting stuff out. If you’re interested in this and have 15 minutes to spare I think you’ll enjoy it. It’s a voice over so turn your sound on.

Can’t forget about ol George. This is another nice colt Iv had the privilege of starting this month. He’s become nice and quiet, soft, and has developed a willingness to pay attention an lean about anything you throw at him! We also found out yesterday he really really hates a cow in a really good way!!😍 This is gonna be one punchy colt!

If anyone is in the market for what’s going to be a big flashy mare that will be good for the whole family you are not going to want to miss this girl!
Out of CR Highlight (own son of High brow cat) and Reta ( a Percheron mare) off Center Ranch in Texas.
This filly is only about 35 days into consecutive training and she is a rockstar!
First ride in a snaffle.
Why ride a 2 yr old in a hackamore first? This is why. This is the first time a bit has been in this fillies mouth.
No stiffness, I’m not pulling like crazy to get her to turn and bend, I’m not pulling on her to stop!
In my opinion this is how it should look asking a colt to accept a bit for the first time.
5 yr old gelding for sale!

2nd ride.
No voice over this time. I’ll just let the video do the talking. This is this colts 2nd ride. Pay attention to the whole process. I clipped in saddling for a reason. Loose lead rope the whole time. If he goes to walk off I cluck and he’s right back with me. This is how I like them to behave before I get to carried away with riding them.
2nd ride.
Little voice over. Thanks for listening. If you have a colt needing started please consider us!!
Filly first ride.
Another laid back easy cool and calm first ride.
