Giant Chinchilla Rabbits 🐰

After making a long and hard decision I’ve decided to depart with my Giant chinchilla breeding pair. If you’re looking to purchase meat breeding stock - these two are for you!

Why Giant Chins?

- Perfect meat to bone ratio

- quick turnaround = bountiful harvests

- can grow up to 15+ lbs!

This will be a completely foreign project that I hope to document here periodically….

Now, some “Rabbit Enthusiasts” may grit their teeth at the sight of my grounded trio tractor BUT not everyone raises rabbits for sustainability. Since gaining this beauty it’s held a fluffle & having the giants inside I intend on the generations to continue to grow.

Thanksgiving

I am so thankful for our loving community and what Hutch & Harvest has become. I'm thankful for the clothes on my little boys backs and the hay in the shed. I'm so thankful for the strength my partner has and the will he has to do with it. I'm thankful for the sunrise and the memories that will be made with this susnset ❤️

We pray that everyone enjoys your day filled delicious food, laughter with your loved ones, and most importantly praising the Lord for all that he does

Waterfowl🪶

Being able to process your own livestock may not be the easiest sight to swallow, but it allows you to save money and provide ethically raised meat for the entire family. With predetermined fates and impeccable timing from a friend- two hens are now chilling for festive preparations.

Saturday afternoon the ambitiously driven Margaret over at The Happinest Homestead invited me for a poultry harvest! Knowing I couldn’t resist I rushed around cleaning up the five projects strolled throughout my yard and made the dash!

…After packing up two Pekin hens that is 🦆🦆

It was a wonderful time getting to know more of Margaret’s perspectives and interests in various ways of sustainability and the Lord. It was a blessing to have shared my knowledge with such a sweet and inspiring woman and I definitely hope to share more content with her soon ❤️

Processing Duck looks anatomically close to Chickens (as assumed) and can be broken down into these five steps

Cleaning/sterilize tools
Dispatch
Dunk-pluck or skin
Disembowel
Wash carcass & chill

That’s it! I do prefer to chill any of my harvest in an ice bath for 24 hours straight from dressing, then add to the fridge later. By doing so not only am I perfectly firming the meat but also allowing it to flavor. 🍗

Down to a single pair Drake & Hen I’m hoping to see some egg production soon… if not there is always Christmas Supper🎄

Pekin duck 🦆

Four lovely meat birds that are currently finishing on fresh vegetation and forage for the holidays. I’ve quickly come to realize how having them around makes for an excellent project for the “urbstead”……🤭🧂

Farm-raised Pekin is said to be lower in fat than most every form of protein. Although the meat is lean, duck is densely packed with nutrients and beautifully rich of iron. This bird is ultimately for muscle building, brain developing, and a fantastic way to support immune systems during the colder season.

Considering ducks?🦆

✨ ducks can consistently lay for a duration longer than chickens

✨ webbed feet lack the nerves that sense cold

✨ they have superior pest control

✨ eggs are creamier, have richer taste

✨ they hold great conversations

Our beautiful Rabbit tractor that currently houses our Giant Chinchilla pair!

With hopes that my young buck “Stahl” and proven Doe “Basil” breed no later than November I’ll be looking forward to a litter late December🤞🏼

Whoever created the saying “breed like rabbits” has obviously never bred literal rabbits….😂

Introducing our very own MINI Rex Herd!😍

Just when I said our rabbitry would only house larger breeds we came across these two with gorgeously broken, velvety pelts! Meet Autumn and truffle, our first breeding pair that will create many generations for our starter mini herd! I just know they’ll make the cutest of kits.
