Most equine owners know that a negative Coggins test is a document required to be able to transport their animal across state lines, enter them in a competitive event, or board at someone's barn. But what does the phrase "negative Coggins test" actually mean?

A "Coggins" is a blood test that can only be performed by USDA-approved laboratories and checks for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) antibodies in the blood. EIA is a potentially fatal blood-borne infectious viral disease that is primarily transmitted by biting flies, particularly horseflies—which means that your animals are at risk even if they never travel or live in a closed herd.

The clinical signs of disease can vary dramatically from an acute infection to an inapparent form, but what is important to know is that it produces a persistent infection. Once an animal tests positive for EIA it becomes a lifelong source of disease transmission, so the owner can only choose between quarantine for life or humane euthanasia to ensure that large outbreaks of the disease don’t occur. There is no vaccine and no treatment for EIA.

Take-home message: While a Coggins test is a necessary travel document, don’t forget that it's also first and foremost a way to identify and remove EIA carriers to keep the disease under control.

Gastric ulcers are often caused by stress, prolonged periods of time without food, stall confinement, and chronic use of NSAIDS. Ulcers can cause pain and discomfort if left untreated.

The only way to definitively diagnose ulcers is through a gastroscopy done by a veterinarian. We offer this service at our clinic.

These cute kids came to see us today to be disbudded! 🐐

This process is done before the goats are 2-3 weeks old. The purpose of this procedure is to prevent them from growing horns. This is a common practice for producers of goats to decrease risk of injury to handlers and other goats.

During summer months, venomous snakes are out and about, which creates an increased risk for horses to be bitten.

What should you do if you discover your horse has suffered a snake bite? Call your veterinarian immediately! Prompt care is key.

We do carry anti-venom in our hospital that can be used to help treat your horse in these circumstances.

Romeo was Dr. Stewart’s personal horse that he used for field trials. He is now retired and lives out his days eating grass in the pasture with his best friend Manchie.

💜Manchie💜
Manchie was donated by an employee in 2011. She currently serves as our tease mare for collecting stallions during breeding season.

💚Bass💚
Bass was found as a kitten by an employee in a Bass Pro parking lot in 2011. He came to live at the clinic and has been here since! He greets the vet assistants every morning by meowing very loudly… making sure to let them know it is time for his breakfast!

FIREWORKS: KEEPING YOUR HORSE SAFE

Here’s a few tips we’ve complied to help ease the stress during this holiday.

🎆 Find out dates and times of nearby fireworks
🎆 Check pastures/stalls for anything that could cause potential injury if your horse gets spooked
🎆 Have a plan in place for fire safety
🎆 Stay nearby your horse during firework displays
🎆 Play music on a radio to mask some of the noise
🎆 Consider sedation for those horses who need a little extra help relaxing
🎆 Remain calm! If you’re worried, your horses fear may worsen.
🎆 Have a list of emergency phone numbers ready just in case
