**NEW BRAND OF PEANUT BUTTER TOXIC TO DOGS**
Adding to our post about common household toxins on June 1st, we would like to share some new information with you: A lot of pet owners give their dogs peanut butter as a snack, put it inside of a Kong to encourage GOOD chewing behaviors, or hide medications inside of a bite. In fact, we recommend hiding medications inside a bite of peanut butter for a lot of our patients.
It has come to our attention, however, that a new brand of peanut butter called "Nuts 'N More" has been introduced to the market. NUTS 'N MORE PEANUT BUTTER IS NOT SAFE TO GIVE TO DOGS. This brand of peanut butter contains the sweetener, xylitol, commonly found in sugar free gum. This sweetener, in as little an amount as 0.1 grams per kilogram (this means a 22 lb dog ingesting only 1 gram) can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar. If our sample dog of 22 lbs ingested just a slightly larger amount (5 grams), the sweetener can lead to debilitating, and often deadly, destruction of his/her liver cells.
As far as we know, there are no other brands of peanut butter that contain xylitol, but please be mindful and check your peanut butter label before giving it to your dog. Thank you!
