Just wanted to post a couple pictures to enlighten and inform about the effects of matting!
Matting is a condition in your dog's fur that is caused by dense tangles and knots. It's a painful condition that can lead to other health concerns such as infections or skin irritations and can also mask other health issues or parasites.
Some ways to avoid situations like this are, taking the dog into professional grooming on a regular schedule (every 4 to 6 weeks) and brushing. Brushing with a slicker brush and a comb AT LEAST once a week is recommended but I prefer three to fours time a week for long hair dogs.
My favorite slicker brush to recommend to my clients is the Paw Brothers Slicker Brush (linked below), it is very easy to use and comfortable! Once the dog is completely brushed out with the slicker brush, you should then go in with a comb and make sure ALL the tangles are completely brushed out. Any Greyhound comb will work perfectly.
If matting is all ready present there is a good chance you will NOT be able to brush it out. There is also a possibility of injury if you try to do so. It is best to bring the dog into a professional groomer to get the matting shaved off. This will allow for new hair growth and also allow the skin to breath.
