I heard a quote that I absolutely love a long time ago on a random HGTV episode of something. It was something a father told his althlete daughter when she wasn't feeling the super-early practice or any of the other "have to's" it takes to be great at something. He'd tell her, "Might as well be awesome." As in, you have to get up and go anyway... might as well put your best self forward.

It's a personal favorite of mine, and makes me smile when I'm in a funk or not feeling the task in front of me. If it works for you, too, then you're welcome to borrow it. And now, back to work. Might as well be awesome!😉

Can you tell which one is the "real" smile? Real expressions are so much more effective in branding, but getting them is easier said than done.

I have a lot of tricks to help clients relax and show me their true expressions, but it might surprise some to know I have to use tricks to get real smiles from myself, too. Even most photographers can't smile convincingly on command!

The particular method I used here is a trade secret, but I can tell you this... the first was my best attempt at a genuine smile. And the second is what I actually look like when I'm smiling about something real. It's a subtle difference, but to anyone that is tuned in to the nuance of others' facial expressions, this is the difference between a headshot and an engaging and welcoming portrait.

And if you're brand messaging is trying to say "engaging and welcoming".... the first one simply is not as effective.

One of the many things I love about being a photographer, and especially Branding portraits, is that you get to meet and work with people of so many different passions. This recent session is a perfect example... Jessica works with pet owners who do not want to board their pets. She provides in-home care for their fur babies while they are away, so they can stay in a familiar and safe environment. Which means, naturally she is a pet lover (and currently has 3 fur babies and one feather baby of her own) and also that she knows a LOT about animals. It also means I got to follow her around and watch her play with a whole days worth of sweet, loving, kissing, snuggling fur babies!

A LOT of planning goes into a Branding Session. For this image, we used a venue that the business owner, a Civil Engineer, had worked on. It was a perfect spot for several reasons: 1. The aesthetics matched the fun, fresh, current brand of the company, including a graffiti wall that matched their brand colors.⠀
2. The site was a previous project of the business owner.⠀
3. It represented perfectly the type of project this business wanted to attract; a reuse project that turned an old, unused strip mall into a vibrant, multi-use office and retail space with a lot of green touches to keep it environmentally friendly.⠀

On the Blog: Ann knew she wanted some colorful graffiti included in her session, so we started with mapping out locations that had artwork that matched the feel and color of her branding, as well as looking for anything special that reinforced her message or brand. We narrowed it down to a few favorites, and then planned our caravan through Atlanta to hit the graffiti art that made the cut.
