Have your pets been scratching or licking themselves more so recently? They could be experiencing allergies! If your pets suffer from allergies, you're probably itching for a solution!

🐾 Allergies mainly present as skin allergies: itching in localized areas or all-over, red skin, hair loss, red bumps or pustules on the skin, ear infections, licking/chewing the paws
🐾 Some pets experience year-round allergies or seasonal allergies
🐾 Steroids are still occasionally used in extreme cases, but there are better options at your vet's disposal - Apoquel (a tablet given daily) or Cytopoint (an injection given monthly) to help eliminate the itch-factor related to allergies.
🐾 Specialty shampoos and sprays are topical options that can be used in conjunction with oral allergy medication
🐾 Allergy testing is available! A blood sample is taken and sent off for analysis to see what environmental factors could be causing your pet's allergies. From there, a special serum/drops are made specifically for your pet based on the results.
🐾 If a food allergy is suspected, then a diet trial is normally recommended for 12-14 weeks to determine if a protein source is causing your pet's skin issues.

Pet obesity is on the rise, and with it comes significant health risks. Heart disease, kidney and liver disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, and joint issues such as osteoarthritis or a cruciate ligament rupture, are all examples of health issues that can occur with obesity. Our pets already don't live long enough, so why put them at risk for developing these issues and significantly reducing their life expectancy? Listed below are ways to help them shed those extra pounds and feel better! ⬇

🐾 Exercise! Daily walks, throwing a ball or frisbee, getting interactive toys for your cats - these are all ways to get your pets up and moving more to burn off some of those extra calories.
🐾 Swapping those store bought treats for healthier options - carrots, green beans, apples (without the core), bananas (without the peel), and blueberries are all examples of healthy treat options that pets are sure to love!
🐾 Switching your pet to a weight management diet can also help. These diets tend to be lower in fat and calories and high in fiber, helping your pet feel fuller for a longer period of time.
🐾 Watch the table scraps! You may think that a small taste whenever you eat a meal is ok, but it quickly adds up to extra calories when you consider their normal diet plus their treats they eat throughout the day.

Please talk with your veterinarian before starting your pet on a weight-loss regimen. Pets can actually become sick if they lose too much weight too quickly!

Why is it so important to spay or neuter your pets? It not only prevents overpopulation of pets and reduces unwanted litters, but it has health benefits for both males and females.

🐾 Spaying a female dog or cat can reduce the risk of uterine infections and mammary cancer.
🐾 Neutering a male dog or cat can reduce the risk of testicular cancer and prostate issues.
🐾 Spaying and neutering also has behavioral benefits by helping to eliminate scent-marking in the home while also reducing aggression and excessive barking.

There's always controversy when it comes to the timing of these surgeries. Should you do it before 6 months of age? After 6 months of age but still less than a year of age? What about waiting until 1 or 2 years of age? This is a discussion to have with your veterinarian. Every pet's situation can be different!

You've probably seen the logo in our hospital as well as online, but what does it mean for a veterinary clinic to be AAHA accredited? Well, it means they recognize the importance of being held to a higher standard when it comes to patient care and delivering high quality medicine. Becoming accredited is completely voluntary, and only about 15% of veterinary hospitals in the U.S. and Canada are accredited. We are proud to be an AAHA accredited hospital, and to continuously improve and build off of our already high standards of medicine. Listed below are some facts about AAHA accreditation ⬇:

🐾 AAHA accredited veterinary clinics have strict standards and guidelines to follow when it comes to anesthesia/surgery, dentistry, emergency and critical care, human resources, laboratory, medical records, pain management, vaccines, pharmacy, and hospital cleanliness.
🐾 Becoming accredited is a challenging and rigorous process, and clinics are graded on about 900 different standards of care
🐾 AAHA accredited veterinary clinics are evaluated every 3 years in order to keep their active accreditation.

Again, we are proud of our AAHA accreditation and offering high quality medicine at our facility. We always strive to deliver excellent care to our patients as well as you, their owners!

If something happens with your pet after-hours, should you take them to an emergency veterinarian or an urgent care facility? Depending on what is happening with your pet will determine what kind of care they will need. Below are some examples of where you should go, but this isn't a full list. If you are ever in doubt, it's okay to call the facility and see what they recommend!

This seems pretty straight forward, but every year pets still overheat and/or die when left in hot cars. Please leave your pets at home when running errands! Leaving windows cracked is not enough to keep them cool. Overheating can lead to neurological issues (such as seizures), permanent brain damage, coagulation issues (blood clotting disorders), and death. We know it's always fun to have your pets with you as much as possible, but it's not worth the risk in hot weather.

Besides anxiety medication for fireworks, what are some other ways you can help your pets feel safe? Here are some ideas ⬇:

❀ Keep all windows closed and drapes pulled to minimize sound and bright flashes of light.
πŸ’™ Turn a TV or radio on to a higher volume to help drown out the loud noises.
❀ Provide a safe space for them by giving them a comfy bed or lots of blankets, or an area where they can hide.
πŸ’™ Take them out to go potty long before the fireworks start - this may require you to get up earlier the next morning to let them outside.
❀ Make sure they get plenty of exercise earlier in the day so they are tired at night
πŸ’™ When you take them outside, make sure you keep them on a leash at all times, regardless if you have a fence (animals that have been spooked will attempt to jump fences) - this will minimize the chances of them running away if scared by the loud noises.

"Dog aspirin" is starting to become readily available on store shelves, leaving veterinary professionals concerned. Only under the direction of your veterinarian should you give your pet aspirin! However, most veterinarians know of better and safer options than using aspirin. Here are the top reasons why we don't recommend OTC (over the counter) use of aspirin ⬇:

🐾 Risk of giving incorrect dose which can cause illness or death.
🐾 It has the potential of interacting with other medications your pet is already taking.
🐾 Some people confuse aspirin as being the same thing as Tylenol - Tylenol is extremely toxic to pets!
🐾 Aspirin is very toxic to cats - they are not able to metabolize aspirin in the same way as dogs and humans, which can result in aspiring poisoning rather quickly.
🐾 Risk of developing stomach ulcers - a recent study showed that out of 28 dogs, 3 developed stomach ulcers on day 1 of giving aspirin.
🐾 Other common side effects of aspirin use include vomiting, diarrhea, kidney issues, and liver issues.

Before giving your pet any OTC medication, always consult with your veterinarian! Like we mentioned above, your veterinarian can direct you to better and safer options based on your pet's medical history.

πŸ”₯ It is going to be HOT this next week! πŸ”₯ Which means our pets are at risk of heat stroke. Young puppies, elderly dogs (especially if they have health issues) and brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs, boxers, etc) are most at risk for heat related complications, but every animal is still at risk with this heat. If you need to take your pets for a walk, do so in the morning before the sun comes up or at night after the sun goes down, but still try to keep it short. Limit time outside, preferably to only go potty. If you have outdoor cats, consider keeping them indoors. If you don’t have air conditioning, use lots of fans and keep water bowls full. And please, please leave your pets at home and do not keep them in hot cars!

You've just found a lost pet, now what do you do? Listed below are the correct steps to take ⬇:

🐾 Check if the pet is wearing a collar and if there are any phone numbers listed. Call all of the phone numbers listed and leave messages with your contact info if no one answers your call.
🐾 If the pet is not wearing a collar or if they are and there isn't any contact information listed, take the pet to a local shelter or veterinarian to be scanned for a microchip (this microchip will be linked to the owner - that is why it's important to always make sure your pet's microchip is updated with your current contact information!).
🐾 If you are unable to take the pet somewhere to be scanned, stay with the pet and call your local animal control or the non-emergency police/sheriff number to receive assistance from an officer.
🐾 Utilize social media and post pictures and a description of the lost pet and where you found them, and how to get into contact with you if someone identifies it as their pet (it's always a good idea to require proof from that person that it is, in fact, their pet by having them show vet records or pictures on their personal phone).
🐾 If you are unable to care for the lost pet until their owner is found, your local animal shelter should be able to care for the pet.

Losing a pet is a traumatic experience for both the pet and it's owner. We always recommend having your pets microchipped (even indoor cats) in case they somehow get away from you. And, making sure your contact information is up to date so if your pet does get loose, they can easily be traced back to you!

I think we can all agree on one thing...fleas are disgusting! Do you know the proper steps to take to get rid of those nasty, itchy little bugs? You not only need to get rid of the live fleas, but also the thousands of eggs they lay each day. Here are the steps to follow ⬇:

🐾 All pets in the home must be treated at the same time! If you treat them at different times, fleas from another pet can jump to someone else that was already treated, or doesn't currently have fleas. Thus laying more eggs, and the flea life-cycle continues.
🐾 We recommend keeping pets on a flea preventative year-round, but if your pets are not, then they need to be treated for fleas for a minimum of 3 months to make sure the flea life-cycle is disrupted and killed off.
🐾 Give your pets a bath! This will help wash off any flea dirt, live fleas or eggs that may be on your pet's skin and hair. It doesn't need to be a flea bath. A simple pet-safe shampoo will work just fine.
🐾 Thoroughly clean your entire home! Vacuum all carpets (making sure to move furniture and vacuum along walls) and empty the bag/canister outside in the garbage. Wash all blankets and bedding, and it's not a bad idea to take those crates outside and hose them off, too. It's recommended to do these things several times during the flea treatment process.

If you have a large flea infestation, then you may need to call in a pest control company to help treat your home. This normally requires all pets and people leaving the home for a few hours. Some pets are allergic to fleas, and just one bite can cause Flea Allergy Dermatitis - which makes your pet extremely itchy, red skin, hairloss, infection, etc. To prevent this, keep your pets on their monthly heartworm/flea/tick medication. Give our office a call if you have any questions regarding your pet's prevention!

🐾Lets talk about the importance of using a leash with your dog. Keeping your pets on a leash not only gives you control over your dog, but it's also for their safety. You are also able to control who they meet and where they explore. Listed below are the reasons to always consider using a leash while outside with your dog ⬇:

🐢 Not everyone likes dogs! There are a lot of people that are terrified of dogs. Maybe they were bitten or attacked by a dog in the past; so nothing is more terrifying than having a loose dog rush up to you!
🐢 Now this is a big one - not every dog likes other dogs! Just because your dog enjoys making new friends doesn't mean other dogs are the same way. If your dog is off leash and rushes up to another dog that is dog-aggressive, you'll most likely have a dog fight on your hands. We need to respect the space of other dogs and always get permission before letting dogs meet one another.
🐢 You can control what your dog sniffs and where they explore. If your dog is off leash and catches the scent of something interesting, your dog can easily run off and follow the scent. What if they get into something they shouldn't? Is that worth the risk?

Leash walking is a great time to bond with your dog and explore the world around you. If you need help training your dog to walk appropriately on a leash, please reach out to a reputable trainer that uses positive reinforcement.

If your dog suffers from springtime allergies, you're probably itching for a solution. Allergies of any kind weaken the skin barrier, predisposing them to skin infections (yeast and/or bacteria). Once an infection is present, allergy medication alone will not stop your pet's itching, so an antibiotic will need to be administered as well.

🌾 Symptoms of allergies include the following: itching, licking/chewing, chronic ear infections, inflamed skin, hairloss, papules/pustules
🌾 Apoquel is a daily tablet that helps to reduce/eliminate the itch factor related to allergies
🌾 Cytopoint is a monthly injection that also helps to reduce/eliminate the itch factor related to allergies
🌾 There are diets available to help treat/reduce symptoms of allergies
🌾 Allergy testing is available through speciality labs - call and talk with your veterinarian to see if that is a good option for your pet

How often do you wash your pet's food and water bowls? If it's not daily or every other day, then you may want to change your routine. A substance called Biofilm (mostly composed of bacteria) can form on the surface of the bowls and when ingested has the potential of making your pets sick. Plastic bowls are not recommended because it is a porous material that bacteria can easily attach to. Stainless steal and ceramic are considered more hygienic materials, but should still be washed on a regular basis.

Heartworm Disease is no joke and can effect both dogs and cats. Once mature, adult heartworms live within the chambers of the heart and surrounding arteries/blood vessels. The worms impede blood flow to and from the heart, making the heart work harder than it should. If left untreated, the pet will ultimately go into heart failure. Heartworm Disease can be treated and cured, but it is a painful treatment and can make your pets feel very sick. And even though the worms are gone, there is still damage and scarring to the interior chambers, vessels and arteries of the heart, predisposing your pet to heart disease later in life. We ask that you don't take the risk. Please give your pets year-round heartworm prevention. You may think heartworm prevention is expensive, but is it worth taking a risk by not giving prevention and spending thousands of dollars on a painful treatment?

What causes bladder stones in dogs? Bladder stones (also known as uroliths) can be from chronic, untreated urinary tract infections and/or changes in the urine's pH. Certain breeds are predisposed to bladder stones as well. Bladder stones can vary in size - some being very small (pebble - sized or even smaller) while others can be the size of large rocks. Signs and symptoms include urinary accidents, straining to urinate, blood-tinged urine, lethargy, increased drinking, etc. If your dog cannot urinate, then this is an emergency because a bladder stone could be blocking the urethra which puts the bladder at risk of rupturing. Pictured below ⬇️ shows an x-ray of a dog that had bladder stones. Surgery was performed to remove the stones and the dog has made a full recovery!

Did you know that parasitologists are now recommending tick prevention all year-round, instead of only in the spring, summer and fall? In our area, we are starting to see milder winters. And when we have temps around 40 degrees or above, ticks can essentially "wake up". Ticks are also starting to become more prevalent in residential areas, not just fields and wooded areas. Ticks need to be firmly attached for 36-48 hours to transmit a disease. Signs and symptoms of tick-borne diseases include the following:

🐾 Lethargy
🐾 Fever
🐾 Shifting-leg Lameness
🐾 Swollen Lymph Nodes and Joints
🐾 Decreased appetite
🐾 Vomiting
