This looks like a Silver Fox at my local shelter. There are currently 30 rabbits in just that shelter alone. (There are many shelters in my general vicinity). This is why I am so reluctant to sell pet rabbits. People treat rabbits as disposable - cheap, easy pets. I am a purebred fanatic myself, so this is one way that I feel I can help the shelters, by not adding any more animals into this system, even if I don’t personally choose to adopt poorly bred animals. (If they’re in a shelter, I can say 99.9% are poorly bred, with great certainty - purebred does not equal well bred). Generally I want to buy purebred, well bred dogs from reputable breeders. Reputable and responsible breeders don’t contribute to the animal shelter crisis. I strive to be a reputable breeder, and that includes culling my rabbit stock that don’t fit into my breeding program or selling to other reputable breeders. Once a rabbit leaves my rabbitry, I have no control over its future or progeny. I know even when I sell to meat breeders, my intent is for them to breed a sustainable meat source, even though I know most will also sell some. This is why I only sell good quality stock, even to meat breeders, as my hope at least is they continue to be a sustainable meat source for families and pets. I urge everyone to please consider this and not contribute to the problem of pet overpopulation. Animal shelters across the country are in crisis. Irresponsible breeders cause pets to be put down. There are more than enough people unethically selling pet rabbits, and rabbits are an excellent source of nutrition for your families as well as carnivorous pets.
