Today involved a Petco run before picking Carrie up from the vet, and as I was checking out, a woman approached the registers behind me.
"Do you have any fish people here today?"
"No, not really, I don't think anyone here right now really knows fish."
"Well, I might have a problem with my fish?"
I turned around! "What kind of fish?" I asked.
"Betta," she said.
"Talk to me," I replied.
While I only have one fish now, I used to own multiple smaller tanks that I would place on industrial shelving (always called it the fish wall because it would take up a whole wall!) and my thing was bettas. I would receive all kinds of sick and unwanted bettas from the owner of the local indie fish store. People would surrender their ailing bettas to him, and he would call me because he knew I could nurse them back to health or at least make them comfy if I couldn't. As a result, I'm pretty good at bettas, I think.
She showed me a photo of her betta, and we went to go buy appropriate supplies. She's already been doing good by the little guy, but I helped with a few additional useful items and, let's be honest, info-dumping.
I left with a full heart. At my core, I'm a helper, and I love sharing my knowledge with people, especially if it helps animals.
Here's to Finnegan the betta, may his health be restored and a long life ahead!
