Fleas are no fun for your furry friends. It only takes one bite for them to be itching around the clock. As you check your pet, here are some other signs of a flea infestation to look out for:

-Red bumps on their belly, legs, groin area, or the base of their tail
-Dry skin
-Hair loss

Don't let your pet get to this point! Talk to a vet about preventative flea treatments by making an appointment at https://royalpetsurgentcare.com/appointments/

Did you know that dogs can get Swimmer's Ear too?
Moisture trapped in dogs' ears can harbor bacterial growth, especially in infection-prone breeds like those with floppy ears or long hair. Head shaking, redness, odor, and scratching are all potential signs of ear infections that you should look out for.

💧Prevent ear infections by drying your pup's ears after swimming using cotton balls or towels, maintaining regular vet checkups, and keeping up with at-home cleanings using vet-recommended cleaners. To talk to one of our experienced vets about Swimmer's Ear in dogs, schedule an appointment at https://royalpetsurgentcare.com/appointments/

It's Pet Hydration Awareness Month! As you and your furry friends enjoy the summer, remember to prioritize their hydration!

Spotting symptoms of dehydration is crucial. Some common signs in cats and dogs are panting, loss of energy/appetite, sunken or dry eyes, and sticky gums. To check hydration levels, try the skin tenting test - gently lift their skin and observe how quickly it returns to place. If it's slow and lacks elasticity, your pet may be dehydrated. If you suspect dehydration, reach out to your veterinarian for guidance. Stay hydrated, stay healthy! 💦🐾

Calling all Kitten owners 🐱 Here is something to watch out for as you are bringing up your kitties-

One of the most common illnesses that affect young cats is upper respiratory infection. These infections can affect kittens' throat, sinuses, nose, and mouth, and they can bring about drainage through runny eyes or nose. Other symptoms you might see would be sneezing, coughing, or lack of appetite/energy. While these symptoms will many times pass, you should contact a vet if your kitty's condition persists or worsens.

If you are ever in doubt, don't hesitate to call! You can always reach us at 813-798-7775.

Summer's now in full swing! To keep your pet safe this season, here are a few tips to remember during your outdoor adventures!

☀️To beat the heat:
-Take frequent breaks in the shade when out and about
-Keep your pets off hot pavement to avoid heat exhaustion and burns
-Never leave a pet in the sun or in the car unsupervised

💧For staying hydrated:
-Always have fresh water available for your pets, and don't forget to bring a bowl with you when you go out
-Consider feeding your pet wet food, or try adding water to their kibble

🌴To remember during summer fun:
-Keep pets away from fireworks to avoid accidents and stress
-Discourage pets from drinking saltwater or pool water, and always rinse after swimming
-Protect dogs (especially those with thin coats) from sunburn by applying dog-safe sunblock, especially on sensitive areas like their nose and ears

🏥To keep them healthy:
-Keep your pets up to date on vaccinations, and make sure they are protected against heartworm
-With the help of your vet, consider taking steps for flea and tick prevention
-Watch out for insect bites. If your pet is stung or bitten, be weary of allergic reactions and contact your vet if in doubt

Common Cause for an Urgent Care Emergency Cat Visits: Linear Foreign Body
Thin objects like yarn, hair ties, or string can easily be ingested by cats when playing around the house, but however small, they can cause major issues for your pet's health. In the case that the object becomes lodged in the cat's GI tract instead of passing, serious complications can ensue.

Signs to watch out for:
-Loss of appetite
-Vomiting
-Dehydration
-Lack of energy
-Abdominal discomfort
-Hiding in the home
If you notice any of these symptoms in your cat, contact your vet and bring them in to be examined as soon as possible.

How to Prevent:
-Safely dispose of items like floss, string, packaging, ribbon, etc. in closed trash bins
-Avoid leaving hair ties or rubber bands in places where your cat could reach them
-Never let your cat play with strings or yarn without supervision, especially if both ends are loose, and be sure to take them away when done
