Caring for your axolotl

Axolotls should be in species specific tanks. No non axo tank mates! You can add ghost shrimp for clean up... but they will certainly become a snack!

20% water changes weekly.

Leave your filter media alone. Changing it can cause a cycle crash. If you must change your filter, add a new one, and leave the old one in the tank for a few weeks.

No gravel or rocks. They will get eaten and cause compaction.

Feed earthworms, black worms, blood worms, or axolotl pellets.

Keep them In cool, dechoorinated water. Axolotls like water temps of 60*F. To keep your tank cool, you can use frozen water bottles, aquarium chillers, or even a box fan directed at the tank water surface.

Preparing for your new axolotl

Axolotls are very easy to care for, but do require some prep work to get started.

Axolotls like cool, dechlorinated tap water. Their tank needs to be cycled before adding the axolotl. This is a good source for learning about cycling a tank. It is directed at goldfish, but the same process applies. https://thegoldfishtank.com/goldfish-care/tank/goldfish-tank-setup-water/

An single axolotl does well in a 20Long tank. Each additional axolotl requires an additional 10 gallons.

Axolotl don’t like light. Be sure to position your tank in a room that stays cooler (ours are in our basement bedrooms) and away from windows.

Live plants are great! Just make sure to look over them for hitch hikers like snails. You’ll want to look for low light friendly plants such as Anubias, java ferns, and java moss. Pothos is a great plant for growing out of the top of the tank.

Axolotls need a hide. ie turtle cave.

Substrate: NO STONES! Anything smaller than the size of the axolotls head will be eaten, causing impaction, and frequently death. They like bare bottom tanks. Once they are grown, they can move to sand substrate, like crayola play sand (if you want color), or normal play sand.

The water needs to be filtered. Your filter is great for cleaning the tank, and holds most of your beneficial bacteria!

They like bubbles!!! An air stone is great for them, and they will frequently hang out in the bubbles!
