A. versicolor often will make a bowl-like structure for their founding fungus garden and the eggs and larvae grow inside of the bowl. The ladies in the photo had a bowl but it got flipped upside down. They have done a great job decorating it with Golden Mound Lantana stems.

Leafcutters love the stems of golden mound lantana. They cut them up and hang them in the fungus, like ornaments on a Christmas tree.

Camponotus sayi. We are loving these girls. Not only are they beauties, but also very mild mannered. We hope to capture many this year so we can sell to native states in the Continental, USA.

My son got me interested in ants when he was 5 years old. We would go to the canal with a bucket, hand shovels, and his Uncle Milton's Bug Vac. We would suck up the ants and dump them into the bucket and move them into the ant farm when we got home. We would gather larvae and pupae and I would watch the ants and expect them to care for them but they never did. I know now that there was not enough humidity for them to survive.

My experiences as a parent of an ant-obsessed kid makes me better at my "ant business" because I remember what it was like to be new and unaware of how things work in the ant world. Ant keeping is fun and exciting but it is also puzzling at times when you are new to it and don't know what to do. The fear of killing the ants is real. I get it.

Another expo and it was a big success! So many cool and interesting people came to the Tucson Reptile & Amphibian Show & Sale. We love to talk about ants and appreciate everyone who visited the Ant Gear booth.

I'd like to tell you a little about my business if you aren't familiar with Ant Gear. I am an antkeeper and the owner of antgear.com where I sell ants, supplies and nests. I am based out of Tempe, AZ. Most of my business is online but I often meet local customers in person when handing over the ants. For beginner antkeepers, I give the option of sitting down for a few minutes to explain how to take care of the ants they are buying and I answer any questions that come up. I have many local, repeat customers. I enjoy meeting antkeepers, especially beginners who need extra help. Next time you are in the market for ants or equipment, I hope you will look up my store.
