General information
The Grazingland Animal Nutrition Laboratory (GANLAB) was founded to provide the livestock and natural resource industry means to monitor and profile the nutritional status of free ranging herbivores, livestock and wildlife via NIRS analysis of manure samples, as well as to determine if current nutritional status is sufficient to meet performance goals. Additionally, the Grazingland Animal Nutrition Laboratory’s mission is to enhance current technology and develop new applications for animal well-being and natural resource assessment using the NIRS as a non-invasive and cost effective technology. The Grazingland Animal Nutrition Laboratory service provides producers with the information to facilitate management decisions for grazing livestock that endure dynamic forage and climatic conditions on pasture and rangeland landscapes and a basis for maintaining sustainable conservation practices. Producers across the US and internationally now use the Grazingland Animal Nutrition Laboratory’s services for the NIRS/NUTBAL system to gauge the nutritional status of their livestock and make informed management decisions. The NRCS Conservation Stewardship Program includes this system as one of the enhancement options for landowners and stockmen to use as a tool for making conservation management decisions. Internationally, satellite labs are established in Mali, Ethiopia, Tanzanian, Mongolia, and Afghanistan. The growing recognition, awareness and value for the Grazing Land Animal Nutrition Laboratory NIRS/NUTBAL continually increases demand for service. There is opportunity for laboratory service to expand in scope and range in the future. The Grazingland Animal Nutrition Laboratory is based out of the Blackland Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center.
