Everyone loves the Boykin Spaniel - this South Carolina dog was our most popular post of 2023!

Boykin Spaniels were bred by South Carolina hunters to be hardworking bird dogs that were “small enough to not rock the boat.”

They got their name from Whit Boykin, a dog trainer from Camden, SC, who established the breed from an exceedingly well-behaved spaniel from Spartanburg with the unfortunate name of “Dumpy.”

In 1984, Governor Richard W. Riley proclaimed the Boykin Spaniel as South Carolina's official state canine with September 1st being known as “Boykin Spaniel Day.”
