Special story, and impressive horse.💫 Congratulations Kole Price!
The value of assets.
Last week I watched the great horse, Golden Coins capture the open derby at the national reining breeders classic with Kole Price.
I read a story after the victory about my dear friend and mentor, Doug Carpenter being instrumental in the acquisition of this horse and it all made perfect sense.
I learned so much from Doug by watching what he did and how he handled success. Doug believed in investing in assets, whether it was a golden coin or a Klapper bit,
When I was at my lowest point financially he told me to take $25 and buy a silver coin every time I got any money. At the end of the year you’ll have trading money and it’s too much trouble to cash it out to spend so you’ll save some. He was right. I was not surprised to hear the inspiration for Golden Coins name was Doug’s incredible affinity to see value in precious assets.
Just before Doug passed he bought a bay spooks gotta whiz gelding worth the money off the salvage pile and just called me and said “Roscoe I’m sending you a c**t out there. Do your deal on him for 60 days and I’ll cash him out. I ride him. He found his stop like Doug said he would and he sold him to the late, great Kelle Smith and it was one of her last great show horses.
About two days after Doug had passed I got a small brown envelope in the mail. It contained my commission in cash as agreed upon for doing the job plus a bonus from Doug. One ounce of pure gold. That ounce of gold was worth about $1,700.00 then and it’s worth about $3,000.00 now. If you total the breeding and booking for Golden Coins it comes to $3,000.00
I feel pretty good about the moon pie baby we will have and the fact that I have taken Doug’s advice. Buy appreciating assets, pay yourself first, quality is value. I’ve always wanted to tell that story about Doug sending me the gold piece but I didn’t know how to do so without sounding self serving. It just seems this story took five or six years to write and I’m glad I waited for the ending.
