Life isn’t fair; as a matter of fact sometimes it down right sucks. When you throw animals into the mix you are bound to have highs as well as lows. More than likely you will out live them and have to make difficult decisions to ensure they live the best life and pass from this world with dignity.

Last week my 19 year old Tennessee Walker, Jet, suddenly came up lame on his back left leg. After trips to a couple veterinarians, we ruled out several possible issues but his condition seemed to worsen and more neurological symptoms started to pop up. It was determined that he most likely suffered a stroke and unfortunately would never be able to return to being able to do his job as a field trial horse.

Today, I said until we meet again and donated him to the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I feel like it was the right one. He will be given the best life possible until it’s time for him to go and in the process will help students learn essential skills needed for their future careers. I hope that his life will bless the students he encounters at KSU just had his life blessed mine.

We are excited to announce the successful breeding between FC NGSPA NAC 2XRU-NAC NGSPA 9XCH NGSPA 10XRU-CH BMB’s
Freeloader and FC NGSPA RU-CH Hunt’em Up’s Aim To Impress NA-1. Hewey and Bl**er are two high caliber dogs whose resumes speak for themselves. They can make big country look small and do so with extreme style, smooth gates, and class. We expect their puppies to be the same way.

Hewey is an NGSPA All Age National Champion and 2 time Runner Up National Champion; as well as, a 9 time Champion and 10 time Runner Up Champion. He is also an AKC Field Champion. Hewey is a picture of consistency just like his father Lewey who is the winningest dog of all time in American Field history. He has produced a national placer, multiple NGSPA champions, multiple AKC field champions, a futurity winner, and multiple futurity placers. Hewey cut his teeth on multiple species of wild birds and has won multiple wild bird championships. To top it off, Hewey has a wonderfully sound temperament which allows him to live the life of luxury as a family companion and house dog when he’s not busy winning championships.

Bl**er is a rare blend of versatility and athleticism. You don’t see many GSP’s that were bred for versatility who can also compete with the dogs who run at Eureka and on the NGSPA field trial circuit. Bl**er is as naturally talented as they come and does everything with enthusiasm and style. She loves to work and is extremely biddable. She steadied up easily and has a great natural retrieve and honor. Bl**er has the sweetest temperament and makes friends everywhere she travels. She’s an absolutely wonderful family companion and house dog. Bl**er is currently an AKC field champion and was the Region 3 OSD Runner Up Champion last fall. She’s also proven herself on multiple species of wild birds across the country. We have plans to continue to campaign her in NGSPA and AKC championships to make the most of her special talents. At some point down the road, we’ll jump back into NAVHDA testing and seek out a Utility Prize 1 with her. Her love for water, desire to please, and retrieving abilities will make training fun!

If you’re in the market for a high end GSP capable of just about anything these pups will fit the bill. Please reach out for additional information as we have a couple deposit spots available. Serious hunting and competition homes will be given top priority as we want these puppies to have the opportunity to reach their full potential!

We are happy to announce that the R***r X Citori breeding took and we are expecting 6 to 7 puppies! This is a breeding we’ve been waiting to do now for several years. We are excited about the potential of these pups as they should be extremely versatile and have the drive, style, power, trainability, temperament and intelligence to excel in just about any venue of competition and testing a person would want to venture into! They will also undoubtedly make excellent wild bird dogs and great family companions.

We can’t tell you how excited we are to be doubling up on the dog who affectionately became known as Superman. R***r earned his nickname due to his ability to consistently find birds regardless of the conditions and his unmatched ability to retrieve wounded game. He was a stylish, powerful, and smooth moving dog in the field and honed his skills hunting numerous species of upland birds and waterfowl across the country. He was a true wild bird dog who adapted to new terrain and conditions quickly. He loved retrieving waterfowl whether it was 80 degrees or below zero. R***r earned his AKC Master Hunter title late in life proving his trainability to adjust to a completely different level of steadiness than that which is required of a wild bird dog. He wasn’t just a once in a lifetime type of dog; he was Superman and a great family companion on top of it all.

As for Citori, she’s Superman’s granddaughter and didn’t fall far from the tree. She’s excelled hunting multiple species of upland birds across the country and proven herself in multiple venues of testing and field trialing. By the time Citori was 4 years old she had earned the titles of AKC Master Hunter, AKC Field Champion, and NAVHDA Utility Prize 2. We have plans to qualify Citori for the NAVHDA Invitational in the near future. There’s no doubt she has what it takes to earn her VC title!

If you are interested in a puppy out of R***r and Citori please contact us quickly as these pups will go fast. Preference will be given to performance homes where these pups will have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

I had the opportunity to handle Bl**er in the GSPCA North Central Sectional Classic All Age event last week. She managed to come away with a fourth place finish against a field of very talented dogs. Congratulations to Rich Barber and his dog, Diamond, on winning the stake and the Blue Dawn Kennel crew’s dogs, Mikey and Bonnie, for placing second and third, respectively. It’s always a pleasure getting to hang out and handle dogs along side long time field trial pros like Rich Barber and Keith and Robbi Gulledge. They are truly class acts.

Thank you to Bob and Jan Erbe for their work putting on the trial. Also, thank you to the judges for your time in the saddle and the bird planters for an often thankless but immensely important job. Lastly, thank you to Bailey Mudd for scouting for Bl**er.

The German Wirehaired Pointer Club of Eastern Nebraska held their spring field trial the first weekend of May. I was unable to attend the event because of my grandfather’s funeral but Bailey did a terrific job handling all the dogs and our good friend, Tim Owens, did the scouting. He also handled Oakley in Amateur Gun Dog.

Oakley ended up winning the AGD stake with the help of Tim’s handling and Sean Bradley’s scouting. Shadow, a R***r X Reign pup, laid down an excellent run to win the Open Derby. In Open Gun Dog, Boss took home second and Fenix took fourth. Blade, a Thor X Bl**er pup, placed fourth in Open Derby. This was Blade’s first horseback trial and he showed promise. The barn swallows did prove to be a bit distracting for Blade at times and provided some pretty good entertainment.

I’d like to thank Bob and Jan Erbe for their work putting on the trial. They always do a wonderful job. I’d also like to thank the bird planters, gunners, and judges for all of your time as well. These are often thankless tasks but a trial’s success depends so much on these folks efforts! A thank you definitely needs to go to Sean Bradley and Tim for scouting also! Lastly, I’d like to thank Bailey for taking on all the extra responsibilities that were required of her to keep the dogs in this event in my absence. I appreciate your work and excellent job taking care of everything that needed to be done!

I’m a bit behind on posting accomplishments from the spring field trial season but I’m excited to announce that our friend and client Matthew Victor and his dog Tess won the Northwest Pointing Dog Association’s Regional Championship! I can’t say enough about the work Matthew has put into developing Tess and giving her every opportunity to reach her full potential. People like Matthew contribute so much to a breeder’s perceived success by putting their dog in front of judges for evaluation. It takes a lot of unseen and untalked of work to consistently bring home the blue and Matthew and his do Tess do a ton of it. Without further ado I’d like to introduce RFC AFC FC Hunt’em Up’s Lil Miss Tess MH12 MHA UT-1! Thank you Matthew for all you do with Tess!

Tess is out of our first breeding between Barry Bollinger’s stud dog Mason and Pearl. The continued success of this breeding is nothing short of extraordinary. Talented pups and dedicated owners are truly a wonderful combination!

I’d also like to thank Kelli Aitken-Thompson for graciously scouting for a fellow competitor. I’d also like to congratulate her on her dog, Griffin, being awarded third place! That’s quite an accomplishment especially considering it was completely new terrain. It says a lot about a dog to be able to quickly adapt to new terrain and conditions!

These two make an incredible team. This past Saturday, Tess won a 26 dog OLGD stake at the Northwest Pointing Dog Association field trial. I always enjoy hearing from and getting updates about Tess. Tess is an excellent example of what a versatile GSP should be. Matt enjoys hunting wild birds with her and by all accounts she’s a wonderful family companion. In the off season, she’s taken to trivial things like earn titles and a lot of them. Currently, she’s an AFC, FC, MH, MH12, and MHA. She’s also a UT-1. I can’t thank Matt enough for all of his hard work and dedication to giving Tess a great life. He works extremely hard at helping her reach her full potential and it shows. Tess is out of our first breeding between stud dog Mason and Pearl.

and his female Jade had an excellent weekend at the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Minnesota field trial. Jade picked up wins in Amateur Gun Dog and Open Gun Dog! I’ve had the pleasure of watching Jade work in training settings and on wild bird hunts. She’s truly an incredibly versatile dog who is already a VC and MH, MH12, MHA, and CGC. I can’t thank Ross enough for giving her a great life and the opportunities to reach her full potential! Someday we will teach him how to stack a dog. 🤣🤣 I have no doubt Jade will be adding the letters FC and AFC in front of her name before long. Jade is out of the first litter we had with stud dog Mason and Pearl.

Skye was looking pretty on her birthday birds!

Skye is owned by Tim Owens and out of our breeding between Brian Dietz’s Thor and Bl**er. I’m really excited to watch the pups from this litter develop. They cover the country nicely, have style to spare, pick up on training quickly, have big noses, and on top of all the important bird dog stuff they love chillin’ with their people.

Pearl’s days of competing and testing are over. She now spends her days sleeping on the couch, cuddling up to any person that will let her, and hitting the field hunting wild birds. Her accomplishments speak for themselves and her only failure in an upper level test was at the NAVHDA Invitational, but that’s on me and I learned a valuable lesson with my mistake. It cost a very deserving dog of a title she should’ve earned. Pearl has always been a joy to work with. She’s a supremely talented, driven, intelligent, and stylish gun dog with the most loving and gentle temperament. An excellent representation of the German Shorthaired Pointer who steals the heart of everyone she meets.

Pearl’s offspring are far from done accomplishing high level achievements. They say the mark of a truly great dog isn’t necessarily their accomplishments and talents, but their ability to pass them on to their offspring. That’s something Pearl has done extremely well no matter who she was bred to.

Awhile back when flipping thru the 2020-2021 GSPCA yearbook, I noticed that an error had been made in calculating who had won the 2021 Hunt Test Dam of the Year Award. The dog who had received the award had 7 points and Pearl had 18 points. I reached out to several people with GSPCA and they told me they’d definitely look into the matter and get it corrected.

Today, I received the official word that Pearl was the 2021 Hunt Test Dam of the Year and that the plaque would be on the way! She’d already received the 2021 Field Trial Dam of the Year award but now it’s official that she earned both in the same year! I’m thankful for the people at GSPCA who looked into the matter!

In addition to that good news, I was also informed that Pearl had earned the 2023 Hunt Test Dam of the Year award!

I can’t thank the owners of Pearl’s puppies enough for the excellent homes that you all have given them and the work that you’ve put into them to help them reach their full potential. I can’t wait to see what else they all will continue to accomplish! I’d also like to thank the people who allowed me to breed Pearl to their dogs. None of this would’ve been possible without your dogs!

Thomas Hardage and his R***r X Reign puppy, Shadow, had an impressive showing this weekend at the Sunflower GSP Club’s spring walking field trial. Shadow earned 1st place in Open Puppy, 2nd in Amateur Derby, and 3rd place in Amateur Puppy against some really solid competition. She also ran in Open Derby but went birdless. I was braced with one of the judges for Open Derby Saturday afternoon and he told me Shadow would have won it if she would’ve had a find. He said her run and application to the cover was extremely nice.

I can’t thank owners like Thomas enough for giving my puppies a great home and the opportunity to reach their full potential! Shadow is lives a life of luxury as a house pet, gets to hunt wild birds more in one season than most dogs get to hunt in a lifetime, and gets opportunities to continue to grow in the offseason thru continued training, hunt testing, and field trialing. It takes guts to put your puppy/dog in front of judges for evaluation but it goes a long ways in helping us as breeders evaluate what we are doing in our breeding program and at the end of the day you as an owner get a much more well trained dog to live with. All of the extra time spent training and traveling to events is a huge commitment that we greatly appreciate! Thank you!

Sometimes you pick a puppy. Sometimes a puppy picks you. A little over three years ago Oakley picked Bailey. Bailey had came over to run her dad’s dog Jake in preparation for an upcoming field trial. She wanted to see the Mason X Pearl pups and the little solid liver female pup later to be named Oakley came running to her. Oakley wanted to be around her when the other pups would just run around and play with each other. The rest is pretty much history.

At the time Bailey worked at a good friend of mine’s kennel several miles away from here so she would bring Oakley over after work. She’d show me the things they’d accomplished and we’d work on other things together. Several months later, Bailey took a job in Texas but would send me frequent updates on how Oakley was doing in training. Bailey would send texts and make calls to ask questions and get reassurance that she was doing things correctly. There was no doubt she was going to do her best to give Oakley every opportunity to be successful.

It’s truly been fun watching them both grow into an excellent team. Last fall I watched an immense amount of grow take place as Bailey trained and handled Oakley to a AKC Master Hunter title. Finishing a 2 year old dog’s MH title is one heck of an accomplishment especially when you’ve never ran a dog in a hunt test before.

This past Saturday, Bailey and Oakley pulled off another huge accomplishment! Oakley won a 3 point major OGD retrieving stake at the Oklahoma GSP Club’s spring field trial. This win finishes Oakley’s FC title and I couldn’t be happier from her and Bailey! Hard work and determination always pays off! Pending AKC approval, Oakley’s new registered name with titles is FC Hunt’em Up’s Sharp Shooting Oakley MH NA-3!

Latest update on Boss:

Surgery went well and Boss is doing great in recovery. I talked to the surgeon this morning and she said they didn’t find the foreign body but things there’s a very good possibility based on what she saw that it’s out of his body already. They removed part of his liver that had been infected and a small part of his diaphragm. They also removed a bunch of smaller nodules of infected tissue in his abdomen. They didn’t have to go into his chest cavity for anything. She’s sending several tissue samples off for testing to make sure he’s on all of the right medications he needs to be on. She said he’s doing better than she expected him to be at this point and thinks he will be able to come home tomorrow. She also said she wouldn’t care if he had to stay longer though because, “he’s just the best boy!” Thank you to all of you who have reached out about Boss and for praying for him! This bird dog community is truly a wonderful one! Boss still has some healing left to do, but I’m thankful they didn’t have to open up his chest cavity which should greatly speed up his healing process. Thanks in advance for your continued prayers for a complete recovery!

Update on Boss:

He is in surgery prep at the moment. They did a ct scan and found that there is a thickened area they runs along side his liver and to his diaphragm. They think this is probably where the foreign body is and are going to remove as much infected tissue as possible. There is fluid in both his chest cavity and abdominal cavity but the fluid in the chest cavity is minimal. So, they are hoping that the fluid/infection in his chest cavity will treatable with medication not surgery. There are micro abscesses on his liver in a couple spots and they will make the call on removing those during the surgery. His red blood cell count was up this morning which is a good thing. They have blood on standby in cases there is any major bleeding that takes place during surgery. Additional biopsies of tissues will be done to make sure they place him on the correct medications for post surgery treatment. They said surgery could last a couple hours or more so I’ll have more news when the surgery is over. Praying for a smoother surgery than expected, that they can find all of the foreign bodies causing issues in Boss’s body, and that surgery complications are minimal. He’s in great hands and God willing will soon be on the road to recovery!

03/08/2024

It’s been about a week and a half since Sitka, pending AKC approval, finished his AKC field championship by winning a 4 point major in OLGD at the Heart of America walking field trial. The stake full of talented dogs including a NAFC, 4 FC/AFC’s, a AFC, and a NWGDC. I don’t know that I have the words to express just how happy this win makes me, but I’m going to give it a whirl.

We began the journey towards Sitka’s FC title with the help of some very dear friends from Massachusetts. I didn’t even know what a field trial was at that point in my life. My experience with bird dog events at the time was limited to BDC/UTFA/NUCS tournament hunts, NAVHDA NA tests, MH testing, and of course wild bird hunting. Sitka had a way of making things look easy from the start. He was an intelligent, biddable, and trainable bird dog that had an extreme knack for finding birds even as a puppy. I’ll never forget the hunt in the desert of Arizona when his bird dog light switch went from showing glimpses of brightness to a full blown glow that never shutoff. After many conversations I decide to send Sitka out to my friends Jennifer and Dennis Hazel to pursue earning an FC title. It didn’t take long and my buddy formed a great bond with Jennifer and Dennis. I’m pretty sure he still has a vacation home in Massachusetts any time he wants it. They loved him and he loved them back. Unfortunately, a very terrible and unfortunate situation that happened in their life cut his stay there short. While there he’d started to learn a new game to excel at and earned a couple broke dog placements before I got him home.

When I got him home, I finished his MHA and MH12 titles and began looking for someone else to send him to for field trialing. One well known pro told me without even seeing Sitka work, “Well, if he’s not winning back on the East coast, he won’t win out here. But, you’re more than welcome to bring him by the kennel sometime so we can evaluate him.” Needless to say, I didn’t bother visiting that kennel and decided I’d just do it myself. I knew the type of dog I had and it was up to me to prove myself right.

My biggest challenge in finishing Sitka was undoing the boundaries I’d placed on him as a younger dog playing the games that I did with him. I took a lot of independence away from him in order to excel in those different venues. He had to be super responsive and handle in small fields with extreme precision and that meant not letting him run like he hunted wild birds. A 200 to 500 or more yard cast doesn’t do you much good when the fields you play in are less than 200 yards long in most cases. For him to excel in field trials I needed him to trial like he hunted. Run lines of cover, seek objectives that are likely to hold birds, and do so in forward sweeping movements without worrying too much about where I’m at. Go find me birds and I’ll find you. Be independent and use the instincts he was born with but handle kindly when needed and as the course called for. He took to the field trial game pretty well earning 5 of his FC points, all of his retrieving credits, and about 24 broke dog placements before he seemed to become bored and unimpressed with the game. I started letting Bailey handle him and his attitude started to change. I don’t know if he felt the pressure to succeed from me and it made him not run like I knew he was capable of, but when Bailey started running him the dog I’ve came to love watch hunt wild birds started to show up every time she ran him. She handled him to a 3 point major win last fall in Oklahoma where he laid a great performance down in extremely hot conditions. On Sunday, Sitka laid down an impressive run with an absolutely incredible bird dog find to seal the deal on a 4 point major win at HOA. The move he made to find that bird was one only a wild bird dog makes. I found him standing in a pocket of heavy cover behind a big line of thickets that no other dog had covered that day. Bailey had to work to get the bird up in the heavy cover and Sitka stood it like a statue. It was a find and a run I’ll never forget.

I’d like to thank the judges Chris and Sabrina Corliss for their time in the saddle and all of the HOA club members for their time putting on a well ran event. I’d also like to thank Jennifer and Dennis Hazel for their mentorship, time spent with Sitka in the beginning of this journey, and friendship. Last but not least I’d like to thank Bailey Mudd for helping me prepare and handle Sitka to his title and last three placements! Without further ado I’d like to introduce VC FC BDC CH UFTA 2XF.CH UKC CH Hunt’em Up’s Elevated Standards RN MH12 MHA CGC VC ROM!

03/07/2024

Two weekends ago, I ran Boss in OGD and OLGD at the Heart of America Walking field trial. On Saturday in OGD, he got thru clean but didn’t run to his full capabilities. Boss is a very powerful, fast, efficient, and forward mover, but he seemed about half speed. It’s abnormal for him to give anything less than 100% but I really didn’t think anything was majorly wrong. He was eating, drinking, didn’t have a temperature, and was in good spirits. Sunday I ran him in OLGD and he placed 2nd in a 4 point major beating a NAFC, 3 other FC/AFC’s, a AFC, and a NWGDC. He still didn’t run anywhere close to his capability but it obviously wasn’t too terrible. Thru the following week he roaded fine and we left for Oklahoma this last weekend to run in another field trial. He ended up running twice on Saturday due to the way things were scheduled. He got thru clean but preformed at about 1/4 of his normal capabilities.

After his last run Saturday, I decided he needed to go to the vet, if for nothing else precautionary reasons. At the vet, we found his red blood cell count was low, his white blood cell count was extremely high, and his liver was extremely enlarged. After some discussion we decided to take him to KSU Vet Med so he could be seen by specialists. Upon further evaluation and testing, they are sure Boss has a migrating foreign body. There is a tubular looking structure next to his liver and they think they can see a small hole in his diaphragm. They think that explains him having fluid on both sides of the diaphragm. They are going to do a ct scan today and try to do surgery tomorrow to try to pinpoint the foreign body, remove it and repair the hole in his diaphragm. They said he is very stable and in good spirits. He’s eating and drinking well. If he were to start to take a slight turn for the worse they would rush him into surgery today. This isn’t good news and it’s going to be a very expensive vet bill, but it’s better than some of the other options and he should make a complete recovery.

I tell you all of this in the hope that you might pay closer attention to your dog’s performance and mannerisms. Simply put it could save your dog’s life! Dogs can’t talk to us with words but if you listen carefully they do speak. They speak with their performance, mannerisms, and everyday behavior. You just have to be able to pick up on their messages. Sometimes you’re wrong and sometimes the messages can be easily missed but it’s important that we always give it our best effort. When it comes to working breeds I think these messages can be even harder to read because we breed for toughness both mentally and physically. We have bred them to be extreme athletes capable of performing in very adverse conditions and situations. We expect top notch performance no matter what and when it comes to field trialing, hunt tests, hunting wild birds that type of dog is who often stands out from the sea of good ones. Expect their best and in turn we owe them ours as it’s our responsibility to take care of them the best we can. A precautionary trip to the vet due to something slightly abnormal could be the difference between life and death.

I love that NAVHDA is now autogenerating breeders awards for those that qualify. These are awards that the puppies and owners of Pearl’s first breeding with Barry Bollinger’s Mason and Citori’s breeding with Donnie Ebersole’s Thunder helped me accomplish as a breeder. I was eligible to apply for the awards quite awhile ago but simply haven’t made the time to do so. Caring for dogs, training dogs, and other kennel duties are far more important. It’s nice that NAVHDA is taking a little load off of us breeders and issuing these awards without any extra work on our part. Thank you to the folks in NAVHDA’s office who do this work!

Now standing at stud to approved bi***es, Boss is a young male that is sure to leave his mark on the breed. Boss has passed all of the OFA recommended health tests and is a beast of a young versatile GSP. From a young age, Boss was one of those pups that just stood out. His natural ability, intelligence, style, temperament, biddability, and trainability have always made him stand out. He loves people and leaves a positive impression on just about everyone he meets. He is currently holds AKC Master Hunter and NAVHDA NA-1 titles. He’s AKC Field Champion pointed and we have plans to test him in NAVHDA’s Utility test and get him into the show ring to work towards his confirmation championship. “I don’t want a field trial dog. I want a hunting dog capable of being a well-behaved family companion.”

What if I told you that you could have both! You can have a highly driven and talented dog who also has an even temperament and an all but built in off switch. You don’t have to settle for a dog who has the drive of a sloth in the field to get a great family companion. Whether you are a potential puppy buyer or a breeder you should be paying close attention to the temperament, intelligence, and biddability of the dogs used in a particular mating. With thoughtful breeding and a little clear communication of the acceptable boundaries of living in the house that high drive puppy can quickly become the best bird dog you’ve ever owned and also a well-behaved family companion.

Citori and Bl**er are two highly driven and extremely talented littermate sisters out of a breeding between Pearl and Barry Bollinger’s dog Mason. Their abilities in the field don’t leave much to be desired. Citori is currently an FC, MH, and UT-2. Bl**er is an FC and was the 2023 NGSPA Region 3 OSD Runner Up. These girls have big motors yet they shared a couch cushion most of the afternoon while I was busy working on paperwork. There wasn’t any bouncing off the walls just peacefulness as they enjoyed their afternoon. Contrary to popular belief they didn’t need a 5 mile run to settle them down either.
