Nose to the Ground: Jasper
By Kevin Sutton,

Deer season is a much-anticipated time for hunters who have spent months preparing for that perfect shot. The adrenaline rush of finally spotting that big buck and pulling the trigger is unforgettable. But what happens when the blood trail ends, and your prized deer seems to have disappeared into thin air? That's where Jasper, also known as Ranger van Langendock, comes into the picture.

Jasper is not your ordinary hunting companion; he's a five-year-old, 50-pound Bavarian Mountain Hound imported from Belgium. Owned by Texarkana native Scott Norton and operating under the business name "Muddy Waters Deer Recovery," Jasper is an expert deer tracker, certified as a United Blood Tracker. In fact, he's one of only ten dogs in the United States to pass the rigorous German VP test since 2009, making him one of the best at what he does.

While Jasper is often referred to as a blood tracker, his abilities go far beyond following a simple blood trail. With years of expert training and extensive experience, he can distinguish and track wounded game by other scents, not just blood. When Jasper is called into action, he is well-prepared, equipped with a GPS collar, various leashes, Benadryl, water, and other accessories.

Scott Norton emphasizes the importance of not waiting too long before seeking Jasper's assistance. Many hunters tend to spend extended periods searching for their wounded deer, potentially contaminating the track. Jasper and Scott typically start at the hit site, examining various elements of the animal, such as hair color, blood color, and even intestines. Regardless of how long the search has gone on, they are committed to tracking the deer all the way out.

One of the most rewarding moments for Jasper and Scott is when hunters doubt the deer's path, only to be proven wrong by Jasper's expertise. They take pride in their craft and are dedicated to helping hunters recover their game.

When Jasper isn't busy tracking deer, he enjoys relaxing and indulging in cheese, always ready to spring into action when called upon. He has become a unique and beloved part of the hunting community in the ArkLaTex region.

For hunters in need of deer recovery services, knowing they can rely on Scott and Jasper at Muddy Waters Deer Recovery provides peace of mind. If you find yourself in a situation where you need expert assistance, you can reach out to Scott at (903) 826-0219. With Jasper by your side, the chances of recovering your prized game are greatly improved, ensuring that all the hard work and anticipation of deer season doesn't go to waste.

So this story starts in 2018 in Georgia. I was a new member of KBGS-GNA , a Bavarian Mountain Hound club based in Germany. We had three German judges who made the trip over to test our Bavarian Mountain Hounds. I saw the dedication and love for this breed that week, and I wanted to be a part. The VP test is a strenuous test that tests the dog on a number of disciplines with wounded game tracking being the main focus.

Shortly after the VP test in Georgia and a lot of work from Jens Mathis, I received Jasper from Belgium. My goal was to train and test Jasper for the next VP test. Covid really cost us a number of years testing because of the difficulties of getting our judges from Germany back to the states.

Fast forward to this week and KBGS-GNA was back in Eudora, Arkanas testing again for the first time since 2018. I am pleased to say that Jasper and I passed our VP test that has been our goal for the last five years. I saw Bryan Whittington and Boone pass the test in 2018, and I knew at that moment this was something special . Well today I can say we met that goal.

There are a few people I would like to thank and I know there are more.. Ken Parker for his dedication and starting GNA, Jens Mathis, Sven Dörfler, Tobias Gatzke, for judging our event and being so dedicated to our breed. These are super guys and certainly friends of mine. To my mentor and great friend Bryan Whittington thank you for any problem or question I have had during the past few years. This is such a wonderful group and event that I’m so proud to be a part of!

Jasper and I went on a track this afternoon that just went textbook. The hunter did his job and called fairly early and didn’t just track the place up. Jasper was spot on and never had any doubt. This deer carried us over 2 paved roads and a railroad track. We never saw a drop of blood. We probably went 400 yards in 15 minutes. One thing that I really like is when the hunter says I don’t think he went that way! Nice work Jasper!
