Late this afternoon, my sweet Tigger crossed Rainbow Bridge. It has broken my heart. He had liver and heart disease and lived a long time. He loved taking his meds, even though he fussed about it. He never bit anyone. He will be missed. Loved you, Tigger.

Merry Christmas from the Parrots of Sadie's Parrot Sanctuary.

Dedicated to who has cockatoos
The Night Before Christmas... Cockatoo Style!

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the flights,
Not a bird was stirring since I turned off the lights.

Clean dishes were stacked by the freezer with care.
In the morning they would be filled with fresh, healthy fare.

The birds were all fed and put out to play,
Now everyone was settled – I was done for the day.

When down from the basement there arose such a clatter
That I ran for the stairs to see what was the matter.

I raced down the steps and turned on the light,
Glancing first to the left and then to the right.

It was then that I noticed the now empty spot,
In the cage where the cockatoos should be but were not!

“The goffins are missing!” I yelled to my spouse,
While I shuddered to think what they would do to the house.

My fears were well founded I soon came to know,
As I surveyed the destruction of the bird room below.

Feed doors had been opened, the dishes all tossed.
Bags were ripped open, their contents all lost.

The marauders unfastened from the cage top each toy,
Which they tossed at the occupants below with such joy.

The other birds sulked as they viewed the whole mess,
This cockatoo duo had created such stress!

I search through the room, my frustration profound,
Those two fiendish beasts simply weren’t to be found!

It was then that I noticed the Senegal staring.
As his eyes flashed with anger, I saw he was glaring

Towards the side of the room at an overturned pail.
I followed his gaze and saw a flash of white tail!

Holding my breath as I approached with great care,
Was it possible both could be hiding in there?

I snatched up the bucket, the villains were exposed,
They knew they were busted and for a second they froze.

Then the cockatoo shriek and scrambling of feet,
They raced for their cage in hasty retreat.

I slammed the door shut as I trembled with rage,
“Don’t you two ever, EVER come out of that cage!”

They stared at me smugly, cheeks puffed with contentment,
Their mission accomplished they ignored my resentment.

“I’ll clean up tomorrow.” I said aloud with a sigh.
As I walked toward the steps, one ‘Too said “Bye bye.”

As I turned with a grin I felt suddenly calm,
Their sweet little voices could be such a balm.

For along with their mischief they brought love and fun,
It was hard to stay angry despite what they’d done.

My jangled nerves and life’s hectic pace
Had made me forget what was right in my face.

I didn’t need gifts, fancy stuff from the store.
I had all I needed, my birds, and much more!

My dear friends and family, my health and my spouse,
Everything that mattered was here in this house.

So Santa I thank you, but I don’t need a lot,
I’m learning to be grateful for all that I’ve got.

If you come down my chimney to leave something new,
Just leave me some padlocks so I can lock up the ‘Toos!

Thought for the day...🤔
Please, please don't take a parrot into your home if you can't offer a lifetime commitment to these beautiful long-lived creatures.
They're not playthings for a practice run while you wait to start a family and then disposable.
If you're elderly - what will happen to that cute baby bird when you die - it's almost certainly going to outlive you?
What will happen when your sweet cuddly bird bites you - as it definitely will - or when it starts to tear up your lovely home?
Not all parrots are like the cute cuddly videos you see on FaceBook and YouTube. Will you love it just the same if it isn't?
PLEASE LISTEN...

The story of Sadie’s Parrot Sanctuary

After retiring from the Department of Defense in 2004, I was searching for something interesting and meaningful to do when I encountered Nelson, a young Sun Conure. He was smart and sassy. I immediately fell in love and adopted him. Nelson quickly became a part of our family. Much to our surprise, shortly after we adopted Nelson, we discovered that Nelson was a girl; “he”then became Nelsi. Our interest in parrots quickly blossomed, and, as it did, we became aware of the many birds who owners had given them up. We found our next bird, Pepper, at the Wilson Parrot Foundation. Pepper, a Scarlet Macaw, was 25 when we adopted her; she will be 42 on January 1, 2021. As we opened our hearts and home to unwanted parrots, our flock grew steadily. Sadie, also a Scarlet Macaw, was one of the birds who came to live with us. She passed away in 2019, but she was special, and her imprint on our lives will last forever. Sadie’s Parrot Sanctuary was named in her memory.

Some members of our flock can be loud, and most all of them are a bit messy, but each is wonderful in his or her own way. Most of our parrots talk, but smart and loquacious as they are, they cannot tell us when they don’t feel good. We were fortunate to have found an avian vet, without whose advice and counsel we would not have been able to give our birds the care they both need and deserve. She taught us how to recognize warning signs of illness and was always available to provide professional care. Her assistance was invaluable to us, as our parrot family grew. Sadly, she moved from this area, but, with her assistance, we found another avian practice that satisfies our avian friends’ medical needs.

Sadie’s Parrot Sanctuary is a non-profit corporation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, as amended.
