Does the humidity do funny things to your hair? Whiskey can relate!

If you are stuck inside on this rainy day, take advantage of extra time to cuddle with your furry friends and don’t forget to give them their heartworm preventatives.

Whiskey knows the importance of heartworm preventative since he’s finished heartworm treatment and is looking for his furever family for those extra rainy day cuddles. Is it with you?

Whiskey would be a good fit for a single person so he can have all the love and attention. His ideal person has lots of patience and will take time to get to know him before pushing boundaries. Apply online: WSRH.com

Have we told you about Goldie? This sweet girl came to WSRH after being seen living on the streets for a week or so. Someone finally reached out for help and Wescue volunteers jumped into action and to get her to safety. We’ve been busy working on getting her healthy and may have missed introducing her to you.

Goldie is around 12 years old and sweet as can be. She is being treated for Cushing’s and chronic bronchitis, but she takes her meds like a champ and seems to be feeling better already.

Goldie would love a furever home with homebodies so she can get petted to her heart’s content. She does well with other dogs as long as she gets lots of people attention. She needs to watch her diet and get her medications on a schedule to help keep her feeling her best. Would you like to provide a furever retirement home for Goldie? Apply online: WSRH.com

Tonight we said goodbye to our little Oscar 💔

His little body had enough and he let the dogtors and volunteers know that he was ready. Our hearts break for him, as we know he saw the worst of the human race but at the same time we know he felt the love from so many. You helped us give him a fighting chance and he did his best to fight to say thank you himself. Instead, we will thank you for your positive thoughts and prayers and the donations towards his care.

Thank you to Zully for rescuing Oscar from the streets - volunteer street feeders do so much to alleviate suffering for these little guys; thank you to our dogtors at Bear Branch Animal Hospital and BluePearl Pet Hospital for showing him love and kindness during his hospitalization; and a special thanks to Houston PetSet for the ongoing support and generous donation towards Oscar’s care.

Although we were still getting to know you, Oscar, we loved you and you will be missed. Run free over the rainbow bridge, sweet boy🌈

People often come to Wescue when looking for an LWD* (little white dog) so maybe an adopter wants one who is not a terrier. Meet Caitlyn, a 4 year old Bichon Frise.

Caitlyn has retired from breeding and is glad to have her puppy days behind her. She is rather shy when meeting new people and may take a little while to warm up, but once she does you will find her to be one of the sweetest pups you’ve ever met.

Bichons are very different from terriers, so if you have not had one before, we recommend you read up on the breed. Caitlyn is gentle, playful, and sometimes seems to walk on air. She will require frequent grooming - weekly brushing and combing, plus routine visits to a groomer. The link at the bottom of this post will take you to the Bichon Frise Club of America for more information and tips.

If you think you are the right home for Caitlyn, complete an online application and please include applicable experience: WSRH.com

Caitlyn is scheduled to be spayed and have a dental in a couple weeks and would love to have her furever home by then.

Weekend puppy fun with Nancy and Sluggo!

Nancy and Sluggo came into wescue a few weeks ago with their mama, Fritzi. Nancy and Sluggo are now learning how to play with their furry foster siblings and are looking for their furever homes! Could one be with you?

Nancy (left) and Sluggo (right) are about three months old. They LOVE to play wrestle and play with other dogs. Nancy quickly goes up to make new friends while Sluggo is a little slower to approach new people. They currently weigh about 12 to 16 lbs and are the perfect age to learn all of the tricks and routines that you’d like.

Happy hump day! How about some puppy luv to help get you through the week?

Sluggo is looking for his furever home. He is 3-4 months old and loves to play! While playing with his foster siblings, he is also learning socialization and house manners, to help him transition into a home of his own. Sluggo is like most puppies - he LOVES play and is ready to learn!

Meet Connie! Connie is a sweet young pup, about a year old, and she is ready to have a family of her own. Connie was picked up after walking a neighborhood… the kind people who took her in looked for her family and, when they weren’t found, took her to a shelter. Shelter staff identified her as a cairn and Wescue volunteers were notified. We are not sure if Connie has any cairn lineage but we are sure she is sweet and deserves a chance.

Connie has spent the past several weeks in a volunteer foster home getting healthy and letting us know what she wants. Her big girl surgery is scheduled this week and then she can move to her furever home… is it with you?

Connie gets along with other dogs but she prefers the company of hoomans so would do fine as an only dog as long as her people are around a lot. She spent time in a household with adults, kids, and cats, and did great with all. She loves having a backyard and protecting it from squirrels. Connie likes walks and enjoys meeting new people but prefers you don’t wear a hat when saying hello.

If you think you are the home for Connie, apply online: WSRH.com

If you already are an approved adopter, send an email to [email protected]

Wescue welcomed two new friends this weekend…

When we learned a little Scottie girl was sitting unclaimed at a shelter, volunteers made arrangements to get her out. That’s when the shelter coordinator asked if we could squeeze in a little poodle and, fortunately, a volunteer foster said yes, so both pups got a ride to safety.

Our new friends will be headed to the dogtor soon so we can find out more about them. *WSRH dogs are not available for adoption until they have visited the vet and been cleared for adoption. Meanwhile they will spend time in foster care so we can determine their needs and observe their personality traits.

Remember Chelsea?

We first introduced Chelsea last Spring, when she came to Wescue from an area shelter. Chelsea had puppies just after her arrival, so she spent her first few months here taking care of her pups. When she finished her mom duties, Chelsea had another important job: she had to get rid of heartworms.

Now all of that is behind her, so Chelsea is ready for her furever home. Is it with you?

Chelsea LOVES to play, and she loves lots of toys! She gets along great with other dogs and would do best in a home with other dogs and/or people who are home a lot. She is a happy girl although she may be slightly nervous initially with new people and experiences, but she warms up fast.

Chelsea is house-trained and can use a doggy door. She sleeps alone in a dog bed and is left uncrated when her foster mom is gone. She has not been around cats or small children.

If you think you have the home for Chelsea, apply online: WSRH.com

Remember Parker?

Parker came to Wescue over a year ago and is still here. He has been unsure of new people - including us when we got him - and that has made it hard to get him ready for adoption. We haven’t given up on him, though, and keep working with him to help him get more comfortable.

Some dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly this past year to earn Parker’s trust and it is paying off. Parker now enjoys lots of walks around the neighborhood, endless pets, and even car rides!

We will continue to work with Parker to help him get ready for adoption with a very patient and understanding adopter.

Things to know about Parker… adopters MUST be patient. It is unlikely he will take to you immediately, but if you are willing to put in the effort to gain his trust, he will totally be worth it. If you think you might be the right fit for Parker, please email us at [email protected]

Parker is like many dogs taken into WSRH… dogs who have had trauma and are trying to learn how to dog. We make a commitment to each dog we take into Wescue so we will take care of any medical needs and work with them to find out what else they need to be successful in their furever homes. Harold thought today is a great day for an update! When he finished his heartworm treatment and his restrictions were relaxed, we noticed he was being a bit difficult and reactive so we reached out to the professionals at Doggy Be Good Dog Training. Harold has been working one-on-one with trainers who are helping expand his world and teaching him to trust.

Watch for more updates as Harold continues his training and prepares for his furever home!

Remember me? I am Moose. These nice peoples wescued me in July after somebuddy found me wandering by myself. I was skinny and had fleas and had infections and had long nails and did not have much hair. You want to know what was the worst? I did not have a comfy bed or couch or stuffy toys! It was AWFUL.

Wescue peeps and dogtor have been taking good care of me so I feel a lot better. I am growing hair and even got my teeths cleaned! Now I am ready for a home of my own. Is it with you?
🫎

This sweet boy likes to spend his time hanging out on the couch or snoozing in a dog bed. He loves going for walks, playing with his stuffies, and convincing you that he needs another treat.

Moose is estimated to be 7-8 years old and weighs about 20 lbs. He is up to date on all of his shots, neutered, microchipped, and just got his dental.

It’s National Black Dog Day and Cassidy would like to remind you that black dogs need love, too!🖤 She also would like to remind you that today is the 1st and an excellent day to give your furry friends heartworm prevention.

Cassidy came to WSRH from a shelter where she was taken as a stray and nobody came to claim her. She has now been vaccinated, spayed, microchipped, and tested heartworm negative.

This loving girl is now ready for a furever home of her own! She is a bit shy when she meets you but happily wiggles when getting pets. She gets along well with other dogs and seems to take her cues from them. Cassidy is a very good girl🖤

Wescue welcomed another little family this week. Meet Fritzi and her two pups: Nancy and Sluggo.

This little family was found on their own and taken in by a kind hooman family, who gave them a safe place to stay. No one claimed them and no rescues had room, until our intake coordinator decided to squeeze them in.

Fritzi is young - she’s only 1-2 years old - and Nancy and Sluggo are between 8-10 weeks old. All have received their first round of vaccines and Fritzi has tested heartworm negative, so they are on their way to be ready for homes of their own.

Happy Furry Friday! Here’s another new friend for you to meet…

Vince was found heavily matted in the forest and we have no idea how such a sweet boy could end up in a situation like that. A kind stranger took him home and cleaned him before getting him to Wescue. We reached out to his previous owner but they did not want him.

Vince has seen the dogtor and got a good bill of health (after getting rid of parasites). He is about a year old and weighs around 10 lbs, but should gain about two more. He has been vaccinated and neutered and now is ready for his furever home. Is it with you?

Vince is a sweet boy who gets along with most of the dogs in his foster home. He enjoys being the lookout on the back of the couch and getting lots of pets. He is dog door trained and is doing great on a leash.

Vince appears to be a poodle mix and will need routine grooming to keep him healthy the rest of his life. He never wants to experience those mats again, and we promised he won’t have to!

If you are the furever home for Vince, apply online at wsrh.com

Pupdate: Sam has received a lot of interest today! Volunteers are excited to sort through the applications to find Sam’s perfect match. While we wish we had a match for everyone, there is only one Sam! Please keep an eye out for another furry friend that will be your perfect furry family member.

Meet Sam I Am!

Sam I Am found himself as a stray in a shelter in Louisiana. We aren’t sure how a little, young puppy could end up in a shelter so we welcomed into our program - just in time for a hurricane to hit that same area!

Sam is sweet and a little shy. He’s estimated to be 20 weeks old now and about 10 lbs. He LOVES squeaky toys and is starting to love on people. He is looking for a home that will be patient with him at first but will also enjoy a goofy, sweet, and playful puppy once he gets to know you.

Sam is current on his shots but isn’t old enough just yet for neutering. Sam is ready to go to his furever home as a “FTA” which is Foster to Adopt. He moves in like he’s yours but will remain under wescue for his neuter when he is around 6 months old. Neutering at one of our vets is included in his adoption!

Don’t miss the chance for some puppy love! ❤️ Apply for Sam at wsrh.com

Teena is teeny tiny and needs a home without big dogs or kids so she is kept safe. She LOVES walks and car rides so she is requesting plenty of those in her furever home.

This weekend, we said farewell to WSRH Furever Friend Duke Wellington.

Duke first came to Wescue in 2019, when he was 12 years old and had been surrendered to a county shelter. We were never told why he had been surrendered but Wescue volunteers couldn’t bear the thought of him living out his days in a shelter so a foster opened her home. Soon Duke was adopted and set off for what we thought would be his happily ever after but it was not meant to be. Through no fault of his own, Duke was returned to us two years later. WSRH makes a commitment to every dog who comes into our program - once Wescued means always Wescued. We will always take our dogs back.

Duke enjoyed the last three years in his furever foster home, following mom and dad around and reminding them when it was mealtime (even if it wasn’t). His very favorite thing which he loved even more than food was to snuggle in the lap of one of his foster pawrents.

Duke let his foster mom know that he was tired and ready to go, and at 17 years old, who could blame him. Our hearts are saddened for his foster pawrents, Marilyn and Dewey, who opened their hearts and home to a senior pup. So long, Duke. See you at the bridge🌈💔

Two more lucky ladies made it into Wescue… Cassidy and Connie came from different shelters but with the same story.

Both girls were picked up as strays and held at their municipal shelters to give their owners a chance to find them but no one ever came. When their stray holds were up, Wescue volunteers jumped into action to get them safe.

Cassidy was thought to be a Scottie mix. She is about two years old and weighs 25-30 lbs. Cassidy is very, very timid and is being given time to decompress.

The shelter thought Connie was a Cairn mix. We aren’t sure about that but we do know she is sweet (not to mention cute!) Connie is about 11 months old and weighs around 12 lbs.

Both girls are now in volunteer foster homes where they will decompress from their shelter stays, have vet care, and let us get to know them. Watch for them to be available soon!

You don’t have to wait for a dog to be available before you apply… complete an online application so you will be approved and ready when the right match shows up for you: WSRH.com

Please welcome our newest Wescue friend, Teena.

Tiny Teena came to WSRH from an area shelter where she had been surrendered by her previous owners who said they feared she would get hurt because she was so small. Poor Teena only weighed 4.5 lbs so the first goal was to put a little weight on her. She’s around 6 lbs now and still skinny, but otherwise seems healthy. Once the dogtor says she has gained enough, Teena will be spayed and ready for her furever family. Is it you?

Teena has been through a lot in her young life so she needs a calm, patient, all adult family to adore her. A lot of activity makes her nervous so we will not place her in a home with young children or energetic dogs. Teena is only around 8 months old but has already mastered the art of being a lap dog and she is working on housetraining and leash walking.

If you think you are the home for Teena, apply online: WSRH.com

Today is “National Pet Memorial Day,” and we would like to take this time to remember two special friends who many of you may have met:

Cole was a former breeder dog who was surrendered to WSRH in 2014. He quickly turned his foster family into his furever family and went on to enjoy many adventures in his almost 10 years with his mom, Kristen, and his furry siblings. He loved road trips, visiting national parks, and eating all of the treats that he could steal. Cole continued to be a big foster brother to hundreds of WSRH fosters and was a regular volunteer at the dog show, WSRH Terrier Picnic, and adoption days. Cole sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 17.

Bea was adopted four years ago by our intake coordinator, Maggie. At the age of 11, many people would have said she was “too old” for bonding, but Bea didn’t get that memo. Bea and her mom had a very special bond that made it seem like she was part of the Wescue family for decades and not just the few years we were lucky to have known her. She was second in command at Wescue HQ and was not shy about giving orders. Bea let everyone know when it was time for walks, pets, snuggles, rides, snacks, or most importantly, bedtime. Bea helped her mom foster hundreds of WSRH fosters and was the life of the party at the annual picnic. Bea suddenly and unexpectedly passed away last week.

Cole’s and Bea’s memories continue to live on through our friends at WSRH. If you adopted from WSRH in recent years, it is likely your pup knew one or both of these friends, even if you didn’t get to meet them.

Please join us in honoring the memories of our furfriends who have passed on. Who are you remembering today?
