FYI

💉 The literal “shot heard round the world”. It sounds like a horse received Flunixin or Banamine intramuscularly on an episode of last night? We would like to remind everyone that despite being labeled for intra-muscular use, horses should only ever receive this drug orally or intra-venously. Something that the folks at Yellowstone would need to be on the lookout for after this misplaced administration would be signs of gas and swelling under the neck or a painful injection site. Administering IM banamine to a horse can cause clostridial myositis and can lead to a serious infection that requires surgical and antibiotic intervention. Despite intervention, these infections can be fatal.

Why you should make an effort to return a found dog to its family......

This is an X-ray of a dog’s bent front leg. See that tiny white spec? That’s a microchip! It has migrated down the leg....far from where it was inserted, between the dog’s shoulders. This is actually quite common.....

When lost pets are scanned, the entire body SHOULD be scanned to catch any that have migrated. But, as an owner, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AT THEIR YEARLY VET EXAM, to ask for a quick scan to make sure that: (1) the chip is still working, (2) the location of the chip is good, and (3) that the chip info is correct.

Remember microchips save lives and reunite families with their pet.... just have it checked regularly!

Cooler weather is coming be prepared. Straw will reflect body heat back to a cat and actually repels moisture. Straw is tough, thick, dry leftover stalks from crops. It's lightweight and golden in color. Straw has a hollow center which makes for great insulation (just like double pane windows).

Do NOT use hay (OR blankets) for bedding in outdoor cat shelters. Hay is green and heavy. Hay is typically used to feed animals, like horses. It absorbs moisture, making it damp, cold and uncomfortable for cats, and has the potential to get moldy.

You can buy straw bales at your local co-op, farm/ag supply stores, local garden center/nursery, Home Depot, Lowe's, Tractor Supply or Ace Hardware. We’ve even seen bales of straw being sold outside grocery stores along with pumpkins. Farms selling pumpkins often sell bales of straw too.

DO NOT BUY CRAFT STORE SMALLER BALES OF STRAW. THESE ARE USUALLY CHEMICALLY TREATED AND COULD HARM ANIMALS!

Great advice from the former director of Lost Dogs of Texas:

What things should a pet owner do when they have been given warning that a natural disaster is imminent?

1. Get the shot records for your animals. If you want to board your dogs and cats, they will probably be required to have current vaccines given at least a week to two weeks before. This is especially true for the Bordatella vaccine for dogs. If your animals have to to to an evacuation shelter and you do not have their records, they may be vaccinated again. Over Vaccination of an already stressed animals is never a good idea.
2. Everywhere that welcomes animals fills up fast. Reserve at a motel or boarding facility with a 24 hour cancellation policy and cancel if there will not be an evacuation.
3. Get out your pets’ crates and put bedding in them, so your animals get used to seeing them. Sometimes showing the crate to your cat means the cat will hide. Getting the crate out in advance will help habituate your cat so you can get him into the crate and avoid last minute panic.
4. Take a look at one of the many online lists of what to take when you evacuate with an animal. Chances are you are going somewhere you can get food, so don’t take the whole bag. Make a baggie for each animal with enough food for a few meals and any medicine they require.
5. Be sure there is identification on your dogs and cats, even if you have to write a phone number on their collar with a Sharpie. Have your pet’s’ microchip numbers with your important papers and take them with you. Call your microchip company to make sure that all of your contact information is current.
6. Keep your animals away from stress, commotion and open doors.
