🎬 Leave It β€” Phase 3: Real-World Reliability with Lilo

Now that Lilo understands the concept of β€œLeave It,” we’re taking it into the real world β€” where it actually matters. πŸ’ͺ🐢

Right now I’m practicing Leave It with food because it’s the easiest, clearest resource to control in this phase.

Food is predictable, high-value, and lets me adjust difficulty with precision β€” which helps Lilo understand the rules without getting overwhelmed. πŸ—βž‘οΈπŸš«

In this stage, I’m teaching her that Leave It means the exact same thing every single time, no matter where we are or what the temptation is:

πŸ‘‰ Food on the ground
πŸ‘‰ Food on my leg
ETC

Same cue. Same expectation. Same follow-through.

The more variations we practice, the more her brain learns:
✨ Oh… this cue applies everywhere, not just in that one training spot.

Different surfaces, angles, and body positions all help Lilo generalize the skill β€” which is the key to real-world reliability.

Once this phase is solid, we level up to πŸ‘‰
✨ Placing food inside containers and asking her to move past them while maintaining composure and choosing disengagement.

So proud of this girl and how fast she’s progressing! πŸŒŸπŸΎπŸ’›

What behavior have you accidentally or purposely reinforced? Good or β€œbad”

Every behavior your dog does that you don’t like isn’t defiance β€” it’s communication. 🐾

Let’s break it down ‡️

πŸ‘‰ What need is this behavior meeting?
If your dog is a guardian breed, barking is a natural trait. It meets their need to alert, protect, and communicate.

πŸ‘‰ How can I teach a more appropriate alternative?
If your dog jumps to greet, teach a touch cue (nose to hand) You’re not just stopping a behavior β€” you’re giving them a new, clear way to get what they crave in a more appropriate way: connection. πŸ’›

πŸ‘‰ What am I unintentionally reinforcing?
If you don’t want your dog to jump on guests but let them jump all over you when you get home, you’re teaching inconsistency. Dogs repeat what works. If jumping earns affection, they’ll keep doing it.

Training gets easier when you start asking the right questions β€” because most β€œproblems” aren’t problems, they’re just unmet needs or mixed messages. 🌱

πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Everyone wants a dog who walks nicely on leash… but few people actually teach the skills it takes to get there.

Walking calmly is learned β€” it’s not a natural skill. 🧠🐾
Next time you see your dog sniffing off leash, watch the wild zig-zags, sudden stops, and quick turns β€” dogs don’t naturally move in a slow, straight line! πŸ˜…

That’s why loose leash walking is a team sport, not a solo act. Build focus, reward engagement, and walk together. πŸ’›

🀫 My top-secret dog training tip…
It’s not a fancy tool.
It’s not hours of drills.
It’s something so simple most owners overlook it πŸ‘€

πŸ’¨ Let your dog sniff.
That’s it.
Sniffing is how dogs decompress, think, and regulate themselves. It gives them mental enrichment, burns energy, and builds confidence β€” especially for reactive or anxious pups.

Want to know my favorite way to do this?
🐾 Sniff Spots β€” private, secure spaces where dogs can run, sniff, and explore without distractions or stress.

✨ It’s one of the most underrated forms of training and enrichment out there β€” and your dog will love you for it.

πŸ‘‡ Comment β€œsniff spot” and we’ll DM you all the details on how to find one near you!

✨ Calm Isn’t an Accident β€” It’s a Skill ✨

Thresholds and β€œplace” work are about control β€” but not the kind that restricts. It’s about teaching Ivy and Cadence how to control their impulses and feel calm, even when life gets exciting. 🐾

Real control comes from clarity, consistency and relationship, not force. When dogs understand what’s expected and how to succeed, they start choosing the behavior we want because we’ve made it valuable to them and clear!

At home, we restart in small steps β€” like a quick kindergarten refresher πŸŽ’ β€” because new environments can make old habits resurface. The goal is structure that feels safe, and consistent.

🧠 Trainer tip: Reward early, end before mistakes happen, and remember that confidence grows through calm repetition.
