Dogs are incredibly intuitive—they pick up on our emotions, energy, and even subtle shifts in our body language more than we realize. If we’re frustrated, impatient, or inconsistent, they feel it. That’s why fairness in training is key.
Being fair doesn’t mean letting things slide—it means setting clear expectations, being patient, and rewarding effort just as much as results. Every moment is an opportunity for training and with enough practice, the bond we build allows our dogs to trust us and consistently choose healthier behavior that feels better for both of you.

A dog with structure is a happy dog!!!✅🐶😎
We have so many clients that are apprehensive to start training because they believe a lot of the techniques and equipment used in modern day training are abusive to the dog.
For example, one of the most common training tools we use that gets the most push back is the crate. “The crate will give my dog PTSD from when it was in the shelter!” “My dog hates the crate and thinks I’m torturing him!”
While it’s true that you can introduce equipment or techniques incorrectly by failing to condition the dog, every tool we use becomes a staple in your dog’s routine and provides a level of safety and comfort they didn’t have before.
Our dogs thrive on structure and because they know our expectations, they feel confident because of the trust we’ve built with them. The things we recommend to clients like keeping dogs of furniture are part of building that trust and respect. Once your dog clearly understands what’s expected of them, you can slowly introduce more privilege!

If you’re looking to build a better relationship with your dog, there’s a long list of things we recommend, but pack drive is the easiest thing you can do to strengthen your bond. Pack drive is a super doable exercise anyone can practice, all you need is a leash.
Pack drive is when your dog is moving with you as a cohesive unit. Sniffing, marking, barking, and pulling, are all very common behaviors dogs display on walks that show your dog is not in pack drive. Once you consistently practice the let’s go cue, you really start to see the difference, not only when they are kicked into pack drive, but also in their overall behavior.

Did you know these super crucial tips to teaching a successful place?
The place command is an awesome tool we use to give the dogs a place to go tor regulate when they are over excited. This can be during dinner, when guests come over, or simply to practice having an off-switch since so many dogs are so used to constant play and entertainment. Let us know if you try these tips!

Have you heard of littermate syndrome?
Littermate syndrome can cause many undesirable behaviors in puppies raised together right after weaning. When bonded too closely, puppies can rely on each other for reactions instead of their owner, leading to co-dependence and behaviors like separation anxiety, fear aggression, or reactivity.
In some cases, especially with dogs of the same sex, and usually females, the dogs can become competitive and aggressive toward each other. If there is a smaller or weaker puppy out of the two, the other will begin picking on them and severe resource guarding issues are likely to arise.
While we recommend simply waiting 8 months - a year to get another puppy, if you do end up with two puppies from the same litter, there are things you can do to set yourself up for success.
To prevent this, it’s important to bond with each puppy individually. Crate them separately, take solo walks, and provide one-on-one playtime. If possible, enroll them in separate obedience classes and find a an older playmate that they can learn good habits and socialization with. With commitment, you can prevent unwanted behaviors and create strong bonds with both pups.

3 Reasons Your Dog is Fearful or Aggressive👇
At the root of all these issues is your relationship with your dog. The earlier you can begin building that bond, the more success your dog will have when they encounter stressful situations.
1️⃣ You push your dog past their threshold too often leading to broken trust. Now, we’re not talking about high-stress situations or anything that actually poses a threat. These are micro moments of failure to advocate for your dog and should occur before your dog even exhibits any clear signs of fear or aggression. Looking to the example in the video - your dog may love playing with your sister’s dog, but it’s your job to ensure things don’t get too intense - stepping in before a real altercation may occur.
2️⃣ You don’t advocate for your dog in situations they perceive as threatening. This is typically when we see that fear and aggression really come out because the stakes are higher. When your dog is feels they are out of options and need to protect themselves or you, they take matters into their own hands resulting in things like barking, growling, lunging, and even biting.
3️⃣ Your dog spends too much time in defense drive. Without trust in you, your dog is constantly on alert waiting for the next threat to enter their environment. And because you haven’t taught/reinforced healthier options enough, they get stuck in fight, flight, or freeze modes creating more tension with you, the dog, and their surroundings.

If your dog only listens when you have a treat, this one’s for you😅
There’s a balance when it comes to treating your dog. Food is one of your dog’s innate languages (along with body language and body pressure), verbal commands are something we created when domesticating dogs and must to be built up over time using their natural communication methods. We can use food as a motivator and to build drive in the dog, but you want to avoid creating a dependency on food to listen. And the answer is really quite simple! Timing is everything and you’ll be able to read when your dog is picking up on the verbal commands you create associations with. This goes for all obedience including sit, down, place, and any other trick you teach your dog. However, things like the out command (some use “drop it”) and recall are command you want to make as reliable as possible due to the safety concerns that come with disobeying them.
