Meet Gracie

She is a senior 10 year old Pittie Mix who is in a wonderful loving foster to adopt home.

Gracie has had a very rough time lately. A few weeks ago she saw our vet to get her booster shots and have a few cysts examined.
Two hours later Gracie was showing signs of a vaccine reaction.
Her foster loaded her up followed our vet to her next stop in Champaign county where Dr Fent was able to administer a countermeasure.

Today Gracie was at the Urbana Veterinary Clinic having the superficial cyst behind her ear and on her stomach removed and biopsied.

Routine x-rays showed a much bigger problem.

Gracie had a large mass on her spleen. A 3.2 pound tumor to be exact.
Our options were to

1. Leave it untreated resulting in a hospice disagnosis and certain future complications and pain

2. Remove the tumor and biopsy costing up to $2000 more than we originally budgeted.

3. Or euthanize Gracie.

Gracie may be a senior Pittie mix.
But Gracie is absolutely loved and adored by her foster family and all that meet her. Shes not a big fan of other pets or kids. But she is a fantastic girl and very loved.

Gracie was already under anesthesia for removing the other cysts. The clock was ticking. We only had a few minutes to make a decision.

Rescue work is hard.
It’s not always about making the financially responsible decision.
Sometimes it’s about jumping in head first with your heart.

We chose option 2.

Gracie is spending the next few hours recovering with Dr Fent and will be going home with her loving (foster) family tonight.

We are asking for your help to pay for Gracie’s medical bill.
You can go to OurFarmSanctuary.org to donate

Thank You

Meet Sis

Sis came to Our Farm Sanctuary in March of 2021.
She was transferred to us from another rescue because she tested positive for feline leukemia (FELV). We had a note on her transfer papers that she had bit 3 people at the other rescue as well.

We are overly cautious when introducing FELV cats and always preform at least 2 Idexx snap tests 30 days apart to confirm the diagnosis before introducing them to our FELV area.

In the past year, we decided to pause our FELV program for a while and found adopters or other rescues to take in the dozen or so FELVies that we had in our program.

While reviewing Sis’ file we realized that she had been with us in our leukemia space for 3.5 years and was still remarkably healthy. She never had so much as a single sniffle or loose bowel movement in all of that time. So we retested Sis.

Imagine our shock when her Idexx snap tests came back negative. She had had 3 positive tests back in 2021 over the course of 6 months. It now she was testing negative.

We repeated the test with a test from a different batch as the first test. She was still negative.

Our next step was to send her blood out to lab for a more extensive PCR test. The PCR test results show no traces of the feline leukemia virus in her system.

Veterinarians are still studying feline leukemia and learning more about the virus every year.
FELV is transferred through any bodily fluid to other cats.
FELV cats used to be euthanized after testing positive. Most vets do not follow that practice anymore.
Kittens born with FELV will likely pass within 24 months. Adults that contract FELV can survive for several years if they are otherwise healthy.
Our veterinarians keep up on the latest research and work to give our FELV cats the best care possible.
FELV cannot be transferred to other animals. It is cat specific.
The FELV vaccine is around 98% effective in preventing the virus. (All OFS cats are vaccinated annually for FELV)
You can learn more about FELV at https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feline-leukemia-virus

We don’t know if Sis is cured of FELV (abortive infection) or if she is in remission (regressive infection).
We have only seen this happen only one other time. That cat eventually tested positive again after several years of testing negative.

Our veterinarians suggest that we not house Sis with any other cats. (She would be fine with dogs or other animals)

So Sis is stuck living in a cage at the Sanctuary.
We do not currently have any spaces where she could free roam safely, nor do we have any cat free foster homes available.
We are working on a larger space for her, but she will still be isolated in a cage.
Ideally we would love for Sis to find a furever home where she can be the only kitty.

Remember how we said she bit several people on her way to us back in 2021? She has made remarkable progress since then.

Sis loves to cuddle up and relax with people.
She gently purrs in your arms and makes biscuits.
She loves wet food!
Sis is a very playful and happy cat.
She deserves the chance to thrive in a home.

Sis will require annual vet visits and we suggest retesting her FELV status annually.
She last tested negative in June 2025.
Sis will require a veterinarian that is okay with treating a possible FELV positive cat in the future.

Meet little mama Jem,

Jem came to us through a local TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) group that felt that the heavy industrial area they were trapped from was too dangerous for them to return.

Jem came to us as a very young mother with with a litter of small kittens. All of her kittens were adopted a couple years ago.

Jem did not grow up around people. She grew up in a rough area surviving in the wild. She was a mom months before her first birthday
Once she was trapped, she lived in a foster home while her kittens were weaned and then adopted.
Jem never bonded with her original foster. She transferred to the Sanctuary and was labeled as “antisocial”.

Lucky for Jem, we have someone amazing volunteers that love trying to befriend “antisocial” cats.
From our experience, some of those cats just need a little more time and patience from understanding people to come around.
They are terrified.
They cannot tell us their stories.
Trust takes time.

Jem has become a project cat for our young volunteer Chloe. Chloe has been volunteering for a couple years while she has been in high school.
She fell in love with our grumpiest cats and has devoted her time to working with them. Its wonderful to see her joy when she gets them to trust her.
Earlier this year she convinced her parent to let her foster Jem for a few moths. Chloe is headed off to college this fall and would love to see Jem find a home before she goes.

This is what Chloe has to say about Jem.

“She’s a very sweet, playful, and happy cat. She loves playing with any small thing or string that falls to the floor. Shes constantly purring and is like the best biscuit maker.
She also loves to just flop onto her back and you can’t touch her belly, but she absolutely loves having her head scratched in that position.
Jem is also a very vocal cat.

Shes come a long way, but is definitely still a bit hesitant towards new people and situations, so she would probably take more time than the average cat to fully acclimate to a home, but with patience she becomes quite cuddly and confident”

URGENT PLACEMENT NEEDED BY JULY 3, 2025

She has received 0 opportunities since our last post

Miley
Female Shepard/Kelpie Mix
Estimated 5 years
Spayed/vaccinated/microchipped

Miley is a smart, playful, and very sweet girl.
She's very trainable and loves treats. She is energetic and loves going on walks.
She loves cuddles and kisses and is incredibly loving with her human companions.

When Miley was dumped at OFS in February a wonderful foster home took her in and has given her a loving home for the past several months. Their initial plan was to adopt Miley as a permanent member of their family

But Miley did not get along with their other dogs. After working with a trainer it has been determined that Miley would do best in a SINGLE PET HOME. Miley did well with her foster siblings on leash but off leash is where her problems presented.

We are URGENTLY looking for a new home for Miley.
her current fosters are experiencing some big life changes and managing Miley with their other dogs has gotten increasingly difficult.
She is spayed and up to date on all her vaccines.
We have until July 3rd to find alternate placement for Miley.

We are looking for an adopter, a rescue transfer, or a long term foster for Miley.

If you or anyone you know would be interested in adopting Miley fill out the application below, please share to help this sweet girl find her forever family. If you are with another rescue or shelter please message or email us directly. ([email protected])

OFS wants to give a big shout out to the members of the Wright Patterson Air Force Base 88th Air Base Wing. The help they gave us today was immensely appreciated, from filling a dumpster from our barn clean up, removing manure, trimming a tree, cleaning a pig habitat and removing those pesky cobwebs from our barns. No matter how big or small the task, any help is always appreciated.

Thank you all so much for giving your time to tidy up the farm!!

Meet Honeycrisp and Lady Alice.
Bonded pair
Honeycrisp is 6-8 years old
Lady Alice is around 3 years old

They orignally came to OFS in 2024 from a puppy mill. Their adopters home situation has changed and by the end of the month she will no longer be able to keep them.

Both girls are very sweet, but due to their past experiences they would do best in a patient or soft spoken home. They are bonded and would need to go to a home together.

Learn more about Honeycrisp here:

And Lady Alice here:

We are looking for a foster or foster to adopt home for these 2 girls.

If you are interested in fostering please apply here:

Cat of the week
Morel aka Relly

Spayed tabby female
https://ourfarmsanctuary.org/kitty/morel/

Meet Morel

This sweet treasured tabby is named after the delicious mushrooms growing in the area she was found. Although morels are usually tall skinny mushrooms, our Morel has begun to resemble more of a Portabella mushroom with a wide “cap” and narrow “stem”.

When you call to Relly she normally responds with a gruff little Mooowwwwwww. Relly loves the company of other cats frequently greeting them with a head bump and rubbing against them.

Morel loves to be pet, scratched and brushes. She has some trouble reaching the base of her back near her tail and may need occasional help combing her fur near her tail.
Morel DOES NOT like to be picked up. This is a hard no for her. She prefers to walk or jump up to get to you instead.

Morel has been introduced to a dog in her foster home. She does not react negatively to the dog, nor does she want to approach the dog. She would likely do fine in a home with a dog if she has her own space to retreat.

Morel is a very sweet social cat. She has been at the Sanctuary/Foster for 2 years and is ready for her furever home.

If you are looking for a meaty, earthy, nutty mushroom kitty, Apply to meet Morel.
