HAY BREAKDOWN! -> How much does it cost to feed a horse?

Here is our 2024 breakdown for how much we spent and how much hay we used for four horses! Not including hay balancer, pellets, supplements etc.

In 2024 we purchased 339 3string 100lbs bales of hay.

Our total spent on hay for the year was $4169.46 for roughly 33,900 lbs of hay.

This averages out to $12.29 per bale but prices fluctuated throughout the year from $8.50 to $17.00 per bale of hay!

In our area, Bermuda and Alfalfa are most easily accessible although we do have access to other varieties, these two are the most prevalent! We have found a roughly 50/50 mix of Bermuda and Alfalfa to be the best combination for our horses. Our horses consist of Off the Track Thoroughbreds, Draft Crosses, and an Arabian!

33,900 lbs of hay divided amongst 4 horses equates to 8,475lbs of hay per horse per year.

8,475lbs of hay per horse per year equates to roughly 23 lbs of hay per horse per day!

Each horse needs to eat about 1.5-3.5% of their body weight daily depending on their life stage and their workload. Our horses are all adult (7-19 yrs old) and they are usually in moderate work (ridden and/or worked 3x per week).

Each of our horses weigh roughly 1000 lbs. The Arabian is 900lbs and the draft cross is 1300, for the sake of this post we will calculate the average for a 1000lbs horse! Therefore at an average of 23lbs per day per horse, they are eating 2.3% of their body weight!

At $12.29/100lbs, our hay costs are about 12 cents per pound. 23lbs in a day means it costs $2.82/horse to feed daily.

This of course does not include hay balancer/pellets or any supplements they may get throughout the year depending on the season! But it is an incredible inside look at what it truly costs to feed a horse!!

If you loved this breakdown be sure to follow for more as we breakdown our farrier, vet, supplements, boarding costs and more!!

We are so excited to empower you on your equine journey and help you reach your goals this year

Absolutely devastating to hear of the passing of two incredible people and equestrians 😞💔

Both were pillars of the equestrian community and were doing what they loved. All we can hope is that we live a life of our passions, even when it ends in tragedy.

The finality of death, the permanence of their loss is suffocating. A devastating hold from within that takes your breath away.

Their legacies will continue to live on in the people who loved them and the people they’ve inspired🙏

We aren’t perfect, but we’re here. We’re trying. We’re learning. We’re growing.

Thankful for the opportunity to be in this place and be dealt the challenges that will ultimately lead to our success❤️

The Thoroughbred. Arguably one of the absolute best equine specimens on the planet. Highly misunderstood (spooky, hard keepers, with bad feet) yet incredibly versatile with an unmatched work ethic. Their heart, mind, and soul are wickedly poetic. To know the love of a Thoroughbred is unlike any other on Earth 🙏

“An Inside Look at the American Thoroughbred” gives you a chance to view the Thoroughbred through a lense you haven’t ever before ❤️

Almost every horse can (and should!!) go barefoot. Why?

Because it allows them to
✅reconnect to Mother Nature
✅increase blood flow
✅increase proprioception
✅increase hoof quality

And sooo much more! It can be so intimidating to take a horse barefoot but it is well worth the journey!

With
✅forage based nutrition
✅passive movement
✅quality, informed hoof care
✅consistency

Any horse can do it! And they will be so much better off for it.

For those horses who can’t (years of poor hoof care etc) - glue on shoes, hoof boots and other innovative technologies can help transition them out of metal shoes!

Empower your horse to live as Mother Nature intended and designed over many, many years❤️

Horses. One of the most incredible animals to have ever graced this planet.

They show up for us in unimaginable ways each and everyday without fail. The bond you can create with a horse is deeper than almost any other relationship you may have with a dog, cat, human or other.

Everyone loves horses, but to know the love of a horse is life changing♥️

I have loved horses since I was a little girl. I would watch the Olympics diligently and always knew the horses before the riders. Longing to see horses out of my window on roadtrips. Visiting the backside of racetracks. Watching every horse movie. They have always been apart of my identity. I am so grateful to all the lesson horses who gave me a piece of their heart and who continued to fuel the fire growing within me.

There is so much that the movies and the brief experiences don’t teach you. There is so much more to the horse than most talk about(a whole new post for another day!!). Caring for your own horses is wildly, beautifully different though. And I hope every little horse crazy kid gets to experience that in their lifetime.

We need more people staying true to their passions and shining their light in the world rather than shoving themselves into a box society built for them. You are so much more and there is so much more out there for you♥️

My horses are my greatest loves out of all the animals I own. I am forever grateful for the opportunities and experiences they have given me and I hope to share those with more of you🌟

Ticket is just a few months into his rehab and he like so many other horses were doomed to restrictive practices that didn’t focus on building a sound hoof.

With quality, informed hoof care, passive movement, good nutrition and consistency - laminitic horses can recover and go on to live happy, healthy, sound lives!

Looking at the new growth coming in, I am very excited for his future and to see how he will continue to progress!! Stay tuned and follow to keep up to date with his journey.

Ticket is a beautiful dark bay thoroughbred who won almost $20k on the track. He is all class, all legs, and has a heart of gold. He is worth it🙏❤️
