"Huskys are untrainable!"

"Labradors are so dumb!"

"Tiny dogs are vicious!"

All statements I have personally heard with my own ears as a dog trainer.

Well, check out all of the different breeds competing in Master Obedience this year at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show !

We see our typically expected breeds known for trainability and focus, like Belgian Malinois, Border Collies, and Labs...but!

We also see a Husky and a Shihtzu! Competing at the SAME LEVEL and against the typical ones!

When you understanding training theory and how to nurture motivators in a dog - really amazing things can happen!

Oh look, it's Kali and Karley graduating from the Camo Cross Dog Training Level 1 Manners class!

"But wait, Kali IS a dog trainer and runs TCD. Why is she taking a class somewhere else?" 🤔

Good question!

And the answer is, the class is for the dog's benefit - not Kali's!

Part of complete dog training is teaching your dog to generalize behaviors in different environments under lots of variable distractions! For example, if you ask your dog to "sit" in the kitchen right next to the cookie jar, your dog is probably very engaged and eager to perform that behavior, right?

Do they perform the exact same way in a different room? How about in the backyard? At the park?

If the answer is "no", and for most pet owners that is the case, then spending some time practicing in new enviornments is a great way to advance your training, build a stronger bond, and solidify those obedience commands!

Karley has had many sessions in all of the available training areas in her home (TCD), Tractor Supply, Lowes, Home Depot, Academy Sports, her own vets office, Petco, Petsmart, and now at Camo Cross too! Structured training at all of these places are what make her a well behaved puppy!

Snug as bugs in rugs 🥰

Our boarding room is kept at a toasty 65 degrees thanks to that big ole heater hanging from the ceiling center-photo!

Our Wyze camera system let's us check in on the pups any time, and our bedroom is only about 25ft away.

We're battening down the hatches prepping for this monster storm heading our way, but are so excited to take some beautiful snow photos of everyone here! 🐾

Honestly, what's cuter than a pitty in PJs?! It's chilly out there!

Dro is such an athletic, rambunctious fella when we're out on our walks - I did a double take when I saw his age on his intake form and even checked with his owner to make sure it wasn't a typo.

Anyone want to try to guess how old Dro is?!

Edit: He is 12 years old! 😲 Trust me, if you watched him running laps around he you wouldn't think he was a day over 5!

If a dog isn't understanding what you're trying to teach them, adjust your method of explanation!

Dogs do not speak our language and it's up to the owner/trainer to bridge the gap of communication to have success!

"Well, I've always done it THIS way" is a poor reason to keep doing something that isn't working. Like people, all dogs are different, and being adaptable is one of the most important traits of a good trainer!
