Many ways to easily help community cats coming soon! If you care for a colony, be sure to come grab any shelters you might need at the conclusion of this event. ❤️

This SUNDAY we will be partnering with Midwest Kitten Coalition for our annual cat shelter build day! While the weather is mild right now, we know once it starts getting colder, those kitty cats in the community will want a place to hunker down.

Not every cat needs to come to the shelter, many are perfectly content to live out their natural lives in the outdoors - we love this event so that we can be humane and provide warmth, without needing to remove cats from their environments.

Here's how you can help this cause:
🧤Come on by the event to volunteer on Oct 27th from 12-3pm to help stuff the shelters, tape the sides, and keep things tidy
🌿Donate straw and duct tape this week before the event (remember...straw is for strays, hay is for horses.)
🧊Bring your old coolers (styrofoam or plastic) by HHHS this week ahead of the event
🚗Volunteer to drive or deliver completed shelters to colony caregivers next week

Our shelter offers many services and programs to the community - adoptions, lost pet reunions (HHHS Lost & Found Pets), Helping Hands Humane Society Training Program, HHHS Community Clinic (low cost spays/neuters and vaccines), pet food pantry, HHHS Pet Loss Support Group, and more! Check out our website for more information on everything we can do to help you and your pet. 🐾🩺🎓

If you’d like to give back and help pets and people in need, consider volunteering, fostering, donating, or even applying to work with our team! 💕

One way to help right now is signing up for Tails On The Trails 2024 - your registration fee is enough to cover the cost of vaccinations for one incoming stray cat and heartworm tests for three incoming lost dogs!

Today is Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day - created by Alley Cat Allies! 🐈😻🐈‍⬛ We’d love to see your feline friends in the comments! 🤳🏼⬇️

In Alley Cat Allies’ words, “Global Cat Day is a day to embrace the global truth that , and every community should have policies and programs to protect them.

While Global Cat Day inspires hearts and minds to build a better world for cats, National Feral Cat Day is the time to become the strong hands to achieve that goal.”

Cats are amazing creatures, and we feel honored to share our community with them. Whether they are our friendly, indoor companions or outdoor cats who didn’t grow up with much human interaction, we show them compassion and respect by providing for them in ways that suit them.

Shout out to the cat guardians out there working hard so your kitties can have a better life! Kudos upon kudos to the community cat caregivers watching out for our feral friends! A huge thank you to the many community partners, like Topeka Community Cat Fix - the winners of this year’s Marlena Adkison Lifesaving Partner Award, for being the boots on the ground, traps in the truck, hands on helpers getting community cats vaccinated and spayed/neutered. 🐾💞

Yesterday, October 1st, was National Black Dog Day! We're belated recognizing the beauties that are dogs with black coats.

If you have a black dog, please share their photo, name, and something about them in the comments!

The happy girl featured on this post is adoptable dog Enya who's been at the shelter for 2 months as of today. She's a 46-pound Labrador mix who came into the shelter testing positive for heartworms. She is currently being treated for heartworms and is available for a foster-to-adopt placement as she finishes up treatment!

Our pet food pantry is still seeking donations of cat and dog food. ❤️

How to go from Facebook supporter to hungry-belly filler…

Our pet food pantry helps animals like Roxie when their families are going through a tough time and need a little support. 💞

All donated cat and dog food is put into the pantry for community members. It sometimes means the difference between having to rehome a pet and keeping them with the people they know and love. 🐾

Right now our pantry is running quite low. We accept all types of food to help the various pets who need it: dry, wet, puppy, kitten, adult, senior, small bites, etc. 🐶🐱

Please consider donating pet food, and thank you for joining in our mission to help pets and the people who love them!

If you’ve noticed an outdoor cat with a part of his ear missing - just the top of the left ear - that’s the sign of a cat who is healthy and cared for! An eartip is the universally recognized symbol of a cat who has been spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Eartipping is a standard part of most Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs, because it’s simply the best method to let everyone know at a glance that a cat has gone through a TNR program.

Because cats are eartipped while they’re under anesthesia for spay or neuter surgery, everything is safe, clean, and painless. The top 3/8 inch of the ear is removed. The ear heals quickly and no further attention is needed. You might be worried about the cat looking different, but the eartip doesn’t hurt her, and it could actually save her life.

Eartips are a critical safeguard for outdoor cats. Some outdoor cats prefer to keep their distance, but most eartips can be seen from even several feet away. Plus, no matter who interacts with the cat (caregivers, vets, animal control), they can all tell that she has an outdoor home. That’s a big deal when it comes to animal control agencies and shelters. Having an eartip could prevent an unsocialized outdoor cat from being admitted to a shelter where she would end up being killed. An eartip also allows a caregiver who is setting traps to know this cat has already been neutered.

There are hundreds of TNR programs in the U.S. The protocol of some of these programs is tipping the cat’s right ear, as is sometimes done on the west coast.

You might have heard of other methods of identifying a neutered cat, but don’t be fooled, they’re not as good as an eartip:

• Tattooing – you can’t see that until a cat has already been trapped. Tattoos are difficult to locate without anesthetizing the cat.
• Eartags – they can cause infections, fall off, or tear a cat’s ear. Ouch!
• Ear-notch – looks like a tear but is harder to identify because it could be mistaken for an injury from fighting.
• Collars – they could get too tight as cats grow, get caught on something and injure the cat, or just fall off.
• Microchipping – you’d need to have a microchip scanner to know if a cat was already microchipped. Many TNR programs include microchipping (when resources allow for them.) Alley Cat Allies endorses these “Tip & Chip” programs.

Though our community clinic services are temporarily on pause, we still offer microchipping through HHHS Lost & Found Pets (east entrance of our building).

For any cats adopted from HHHS who were not already microchipped, it’s just $10 to have them chipped here. Any other pets are only $20 to have microchipped. We will register it for you! Then be sure to update it if you ever move or change phone numbers.

You can come to our Lost & Found department any time during our open hours or call ahead to let our staff know you’re coming (they can help advise the best time to shoot for regarding possible wait time).

This photo shows what it looks like when we scan a pet for a microchip. It’s as small as a grain of rice and is inserted under the skin between their shoulder blades. Scanners typically pick them up easily so we are able to call you right away if your lost pet is at the shelter! Microchips are a life saver. ❤️
