True for any breed of horse that ends up at auctions or on lots. So traumatizing for them.

One of the things I hate most about the exploitation of horses in kill pens is the blatant lack of care these horses endure during the auction/kill pen cycle.
Most thoroughbreds are raised with care and have theirs needs handled by humans.
Once they enter this pipeline, they are thrown in a small corral, into a herd, and left to defend themselves for survival.
Most don't have very good herd skills, unfortunately. They don't have very much room to get away from their attackers either.
Fortunately, Okie Heater was only in the slaughter pipeline from 12/13 to 12/15. We know this by the date on his coggins... which is required by the sale barn. He was already emaciated before he was dumped, but even if he wasn't, he would lose weight quickly due to the stress and environment. No horses deserve that, but thoroughbreds... especially those who have raced... are more susceptible due to their breeding and early handling.
Please don't sell your horses at livestock auctions. I can't stress this enough. It's so important to know where your horse is going and how they will be cared for.

"Yesterday I adopted the oldest, sickest, and sorest shelter dog. I'll never forget his eyes. When I went into the cage he didn't even bother to look, he knew I wouldn't even see him.
Curling around the corner He'd accepted his fate. The volunteer said to me many times... Are you sure this one? Are you sure? YES! This is my dog. He opened the cage and 3 animals fell on me. I ran towards him, suddenly he looked at me as if he saw an angel... I hugged him and told him that now he'll be happy again. Then he sleeps in my lap... probably the first peaceful sleep he ever had.
Give it a life. Give it a hug. They need us."

As I was having my conversation I always have with the herd . Along with my “expert” mind reading skills ! Translation skills from horse to English ! The horses want to say thank you! Esp to Andrea and all she does for us here at humble ! You are appreciated and a huge asset to humble ! To the angel for her huge donations for every horse she finds in need ! For her unconditional love and understanding it not cheap to save them ! To all the help from everyone that has donated or shared or just even a kind word ! It takes a village and huge hearts to do this and a lot of crying and smiling !
The horses told me to tell everyone involved in saving them and everyone who just wished them well and to even the people who failed them ! They survived the auctions ! They appreciate and are grateful for being noticed and pulled ! They appreciate that thier bellies are full and feet get done and everything else needed to be brought back to what they once were ! It’s a slow process and some are not there yet but they know they are on way back ! A little older a little wiser and still forgiving ! They said the morning prayer that all horses get saved and cared for and loved ! That god will provide for all true rescues and no horse shall suffer ! They are grateful and say Happy Thanksgiving to all !

Humble horse had a quick decision to pull a thoroughbred off Sunnyside lot . Thanks to a generous donor and sugar shack orphans hauling her ! This young filly is safe off the lot and is in quarantine . She is one of the sweetest lil things ! Thank you !

I put your horse down today ! You chose money over them ! I paid to give them love and dignity ! Because you chose to put them on a lot . You left her alone confused and picked on by other horses. Crammed into trailers and chased with flags! You chose money over her! So I took her home ! So she could have peace and eat and she could not be picked on or unloved ! The weather changed and it changed her. She struggled. So I put your horse down ! I paid the money ! I paid with a piece of my heart ! I hurt my own soul making that decision ! Since money meant more to you! I want you to know it costs me more than money not to fail your senior horse! Since you failed her! I picked up where you should had never left! She lived a long life and I’m sure did what you wanted! Just to be left in auction ! But I’m the one in tears for her ! Praying she forgives me ! Praying God forgives me! I hope you bought something nice for yourself! Cause your lack of compassion for your horse cost me a lot of tears and begging for forgiveness !

I’m sorry not many updates . Several good and bad things have been going on and im drained . I love all horses and believe every horse , the pretty , the ugly , the sound , the lame , the young , the old and everything in between deserves to live a good life. Sometimes I’m forced to decide when it’s no longer thriving and the act of kindness is best . I struggle with that time. As who am I to call it ? Did I do enough? Etc . I’m finding that having so many seniors , the decision is at my door more often than not . Especially with the weather being so cold already . Is it fair to ask a super senior to brave the cold ? Yes I could pack blankets on them . Shavings etc . Do my best to keep those old bones warm . Their eyes speak volumes to me . Their crackling bones . I know it’s best to do it on a good day and not wait til it’s an emergency . I cry even thinking about it . I cry when it’s done and I cry afterwards . I feel I cry more than I smile anymore . I agreed to take on the seniors knowing I’d live my life crying because they deserve to be laid to rest at home. Not in Mexico Not in the auctions . They deserve to know love til the last min ! They get that here . Where otherwise they wouldn’t ! It takes its toll on my soul . The sad truth is money dictates everything ! Down to the shavings , the extra grain to stay warm , the hole to be dug and the vet to come and do it ! It’s far from cheap to do the kindest act ! I have to hire a backhoe pay the vet and then I have to be there! I have to love them til last moment !
We currently have 2 more super seniors to lay down and let them rest ! It’s in the 20s at night . One is losing his ability to move his hind end. He has no teeth and his tongue hangs out. He has gray hair ! He has won my heart . So loving ! But his eyes scream I’m tired ! The other is a skinny sway back old grumpy mare that just wants to be left alone . But loves her grain ! She’s tired too !
Please consider donating to help me do the kindest act ! I’m currently short the money .
The hole is $300 and the vet ranges but is $300 to $550 ( depending on hours ) each horse. The vet agrees it’s time and winter will be too brutal ! I feed 6 bales a day here at $18 a bale . 1 bag of alfalfa pellets and 1 bag of senior and various supplements according to horses needs. Shavings are $7.99 a bag .
Donations are far and few between . Even $5 helps !
The good news is we are approved 501c3 . So your donation can help you too !
Anyone is welcome to come visit and meet the horses . We would love any volunteers !

Well, today didn't go as we hoped but it's in the hardest of times we learn the best lessons and feel the most gratitude.
Buffy was scheduled to have her teeth cleaned and removed today but Dr. Mac had a gut feeling she needed to look at some lab work before putting her under anesthesia. She was right; Buffy showed signs of advanced kidney failure so anesthesia was not an option and as a family we decided that the kindest and most loving thing to do would be to let her go before she lost her will to live and stopped eating and drinking.
I wouldn't have dreamed of leaving Robbie out of this decision or not allowing him to be part of the entire process so I immediately went and picked him up from school. On the way there he told me he wanted to be the one to hold her when she went to heaven. And of course, I gave him that honor. On the way home I told him how proud I was of him for understanding the importance of caring for old animals and helping to make sure they never ever suffer.
This is what he said...
(And for those of you who don't know, Robbie was adopted from the foster care system after years of severe abuse and neglect.)
"I know how it feels not to be loved or cared for and I don't want any animal of mine to ever feel that way. It's only sad for us when they go to heaven. It's a happy day for them. Thank you for being proud of me. Are you ok, Mom?"

(As our story is being shared more and more I feel like I need to add a little more context and also give you a deeper glimpse into the heart of my son. We adopt senior dogs. Robbie LOVES adopting senior dogs. He is sadly aware the longer a child remains in foster care the less likely they are to be adopted. He told me once "if all you guys had wanted was a baby, you would have never gotten me." He relates to our "old people" (that's what we call our senior dogs) in much the same way.
He has also reminded me on several occasions that it doesn't matter how long you have something for how much you love it. I asked him what he meant and he said "well you've only known me for two years but you love me like it's been forever." Yes, my son is the coolest.)

We lost Bay Raisin today . She went peacefully with the aide of the vet . My heart is broken . She was a beautiful soul ! March 31 ,2005 to October 14 2023. In the short amount of time I got to spend with her , she quickly grabbed my heart . Very sweet always saying hello . We will miss her !
