Horse lessons offered. Owner on-site and horses closely monitored. Laid back barn! My name is Kayla and I have had a passion for horses my entire life and been an owner for over 20 years now. My goal is to help other equestrians with their needs or wants if I possibly can so if you have any questions please ask! I also strive to provide the best possible care to your equine companion while here wi

th me for boarding or BnB. I understand not every horse is the same and am very open to helping with their needs tailored to them. I am a certified vet tech who takes equine courses for continuing education to broaden my knowledge and stay up to date with equine health and care. I have riding experience from english and jumping to western pleasure, barrel racing and showed 4H for many years. I've also started a few of my own horses as colts and am a big believer in groundwork and natural horsemanship. I have a love for "the oldies" and make a great retirement home for them! I am always open to learning new things and hearing new ideas. Thank you for taking the time to check out my page and if you're curious for more info, set up a time to meet and take a tour of the place!

Betty and Moira/Stella update!🐴

They are both doing so well. I've been doing a gradual weaning and have completely separated them now and they are handling it very well! Stella is learning about the other horses when they come in stalls at feeding time and has settled in quite well in that atmosphere now. So much so that when I took Betty back out to her shed tonight, Stella didn't hardly say boo because she was hanging with everyone in their stalls still. Prince and Angel are gradually letting her into their little herd and even sharing their hay piles with her❤️

Betty has put on some much needed weight and is getting all the love and pets and treats that she will let me give her (treats would be endless if I didn't stop however 😆) The vet comes Thursday for these 2. Betty is sore and her limbs are not in good shape💔 but she is not going without the feeling of love and compassion that is much deserved.

I've had so much reward fostering these 2 and am so happy to be able to help out Neigh N’ Bray Equine Rescue

Brinley's so excited to give baby Moira/Stella some love and has been asking me to lead her so today I let her in the barn and they both did awesome. Baby has come a long way❤️

She loves to be brushed and her tying is also coming right along that I can now tie her like I would tie anyone else. It's been fun working with this little lady!

Welcome to the farm Betty and Moira❤️

Today we made the trip to pick up these 2 sweet babies as a foster home! Momma enjoyed a good brushing after arrival and so did baby too😊
We are so happy to be able to help out Sarah with Neigh N’ Bray Equine Rescue and give these 2 a loving home for the meantime🥰

Betty was rescued just before she was loaded up to head to Mexico with a kill buyer, by an amazing lady who has had a big life change that left her unable to keep the horses. Little did she know at the time that Betty was pregnant and at 28 years old she has done an amazing job taking care of her sweet baby.

My old man here (22.5) soaking up the sun the other day. Jumi has been with me since he was a yearling. My 1st yearling and 2nd horse ever owned and man did he teach me a lot about a lot😆 He also was almost black when I first got him. He was my show horse and jumper back in the day. Since him, I have started 2 of my own horses under saddle that I also owned as babies (Remi and Rousey are our primary camping horses) and am apparently slowly starting Dallas as well😳😊. So though I say Jackson was my foundation of this life Jumi also has a HUGE part of that history as well. Now I am just keeping him as happy and comfortable as I can and letting him enjoy his retirement🐴 🐴

Happy horses!
We picked up and assembled a new hay hut for the boarders today and packed it with some small squares until I make a trip to get some more rounds.

And put out the last round for my personal horses. Full bellies=warm bodies🥰🐴

One of my favorite parts of every day is dinner time. Hanging out in the barn while everyone eats their dinner. The crunch crunch and I get weird feeling of satisfaction knowing that everyone is getting what they need to feel their very best every day (feel free to chime in if you know the feeling I'm talking about😉) It's not just "feeding the horses."

I also take this time to take good look at everyone as they come in the barn and while they are in their stalls to find anything and everything that may have happened during the day. Knicks, cuts, bites etc and if anyone has an off step, I can guarantee you I will see it😅 I know everything about these horses, whether mine or a boarder and if something is off its addressed accordingly. One reason I don't know I could ever pay someone to do chores. I do my very best to provide the best possible care for whatever horse is at my farm and I hope that brings peace of mind to anyone who boards with me.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!❤️🐴❤️🐴

We are excited to announce we are joining the Neigh N' Bray Equine Rescue team and going to be fostering their gorgeous boy known as Liberty❤️

Liberty was said to have a broken shoulder when they got him and they've since learned it is not broken. Now, he is in need of someone to spend consistent time with him in preparation to go to his forever home someday. So that is where I come in! To offer him care, compassion, love and teaching him to be a loving companion instead of the wild man running the prairies that he has been!

Stay tuned for his arrival in a couple weeks and for updates of his progress! I am so excited to start working with him!

W**d N feed time!
Justin has been busy dragging and applying Pasture Pro Plus to our pastures this fall to kill weeds and fertile grass! This stuff states there is no grazing restriction, but I still prefer to hold them off for a couple days to be extra safe!

Excited to see how much this helps next year!

Question

Is it safe to graze horses after a killing frost? What do I need to consider before turning them back out on pasture? Also, what defines a killing frost?

Response

A killing frost (or hard freeze) refers to a frost that is severe enough to end the growing season. The National Weather Service defines a hard freeze when temperatures fall below 28ºF for a few hours.

We recommend keeping horses off pastures for 7 days after a killing frost. Frost-damaged pastures are higher in nonstructural carbohydrates because plants can not use up their stored carbohydrates as efficiently. It can take plants 7 days to return to more normal nonstructural carbohydrate levels. Higher levels of nonstructural carbohydrates can lead to an increase risk for laminitis, especially in horses diagnosed with or prone to obesity, laminitis, Cushings, and Equine Metabolic Syndrome.

The decision to graze again after a killing frost depends on the condition of your pasture. After a killing frost, no additional regrowth of the pasture will occur, even though the pasture might appear green in color. If your cool-season grass pasture is

✅ taller than 3 to 4 inches, then grazing can resume 7 days after a killing frost and can continue until the pasture is grazed down to 3 to 4 inches.
❌ shorter than 3 to 4 inches, then no grazing should occur after a killing frost.

The 3- to 4-inch minimum height recommendation is necessary to help maximize winter survival and can help predict a vigorous and healthy pasture come spring. We do recognize horses rarely graze uniformly and pastures tend to have areas of both over and under grazing. Therefore, owners need to base decisions on the average appearance of the pasture.

Yesterday was p**p removal and spreading.
Today...he's cutting hay!
I even got a chance to take a cruise around the field and cut a section myself...at a much slower speed than Justin of course 😆
Pretty excited to see what this cut turns out as!
😍 it's been a busy weekend that's for sure!

With my veterinary background and skills it allows me to do my own hospitalization (to an extent) right here on the farm. This, as you know can imagine saves me hundreds, if not thousands in vet costs (especially when you have a problem child such as Bella😆) Currently, I am working on a mare that initially had a rear hoof abscess that has turned into secondary cellulitis causing the leg to be swollen half way up the cannon bone. With the help and expertise of the vet at Stillwater Equine and my large animal boss I have been giving IV Enrofloxacin injections, bute, cold hosing and bandage changes alternating sweat and dry bandages daily. We have now switched to an oral antibiotic to try and finish off this nasty infection after having done a culture. Once we reach a better level of comfort I plan to have PEMF done on her as well.

I am thankful to have the opportunity to treat at home and am willing to help out anyone else who many be in need. Also, it gives my boarders a bit of comfort knowing there is also some veterinary knowledge included with the care of their horses❤️

We had an amazing time in South Dakota! I can't wait to back to the black hills some day! The horses were amazing from hauling, to riding, to being at camp. We did the 8.5 hour 12 mile jaunt from Elk Haven camp to Mt. Rushmore and that was an incredible ride. Sabra was good as gold the ENTIRE trip. Even just chilling in the trailer for our long days out. And of course Bobbi's birthday was while we were there too!

Thanks to those who made it possible for us to sneak away from the farm for the week! From chore help (dani and my mom), to watching kids (granny n gramps😊) to watching dogs (my nephews).

The horses enjoyed their post trip massages yesterday from none other than Valerie with Grains & Manes Farm Equine Massage Therapy and we have been getting back into our daily routines. It's good to be home but I'd love to go back!

A couple of my favorite sites....freshly drug and mowed pastures and a freshly drug arena!😍

Next purchase will be a little drag to hook up behind Brin😆

Was a hot, but good day to get some of these regular maintenence duties done...for now😉

These pastures have come a LONG way since we very first bought this place years ago (well, initially my parents🙃) Regular maneur management, mowing and rotational grazing have done wonders for these pastures. This fall will be applying 2-4D for the 1st time and see how that treats us next year for the weeds! Farm duties are exhausting...just ask Daxton😊

I just wanted to throw out a huge THANK YOU to all who support, like, follow, comment etc on our posts/page! We see you and we appreciate every bit of it! I haven't posted in some time and hope to get better about that but until then here's a cute picture of Brin and the literal best mini in the world🥰Angel😍

Good night and thank you all again!❤️

07/08/2023

We are very fortunate to have stumbled upon this gorgeous piece of land that is available to us to hay if we would like! 😍 With us not having any hay equipment we weren't sure that we would be able make it work, but with great friends and family we (and I mean mostly Justin😆) have been able to start haying this property. If it all goes well we have the ok to hay this "until forever" as the guy put it! So then we will be looking at purchasing some hay equipment and have the ability to make our own hay!

It would be incredible to be able to provide our own hay for the horses here on the farm for many reasons and we are very excited to see how this all pans out!

Thanks to those who made this possible to get the crop off and huge thanks to the land owners for allowing us to have this opportunity❤️❤️❤️ we feel very thankful!

Huge shout out to Cory Abel with Abel Excavating for fixing this sloppy mess! Every time it rained we had a lake in front of the arena that was extremely annoying. Seemed like as soon as it finally dried out it rained again and started all over lasting for a week or more each time. Not to mention the melting in the spring!

The dry picture was this morning after last night's downpour we had. So incredibly nice to not have to slop through muck this morning!!

If you want someone to actually do the job you pay them too I wouldn't use anyone else! (Still can't thank him enough for fixing the nightmare arena footing disaster he saved me from😆 lesson learned there!)
Thanks again!

Happy horses grazing on our large, well maintained pastures. They are drug to break up the manuer and then mowed several times throughout the summer. However, we could use some rain to help brighten them up.

We also use fly predators for natural fly control for 3 years now and have seen a HUGE difference in flies. So not only happy horses because of grazing, but also because they can do it and not be pestered by annoying flies all day long. I definitely recommend using them so long as you don't have any neighboring livestock.

❤️🐴
