Today we owe so many thanks to Wags To Riches!! We rescued this sweet girl who was left behind to fend for herself by her owners who moved. She was dirty and her fur was matted up, clearly making her uncomfortable and causing her pain. We couldn’t get in anywhere today to help the sweet girl, until we called Wags to Riches who was able to get her in immediately! They did an outstanding job on her groom, were so friendly and helpful! We appreciate you all so much! Not just for your hard work, but your care for animals 🩷 5 stars reccomend!!!

ATLANTA, Dec. 12, 2023 – Shelter Animals Count (SAC), the most trusted and current source for animal sheltering data, urges potential pet parents to be holiday adopters, rather than holiday shoppers, when it comes to getting a pet this season. There’s no better time to adopt, as new estimates show there are nearly 245,000 additional pets waiting in the shelter system this holiday season compared to last year. This means the shelter population has grown by nearly a quarter million animals in 2023. This is critical for shelters, who were already overwhelmed and overcapacity at the end of 2022.

“Opting to adopt from shelters or rescue groups not only saves lives and sends a message of support to struggling shelters, but it also fills the demand of pet-seeking families with pets from already saturated communities,” said Stephanie Filer, Executive Director for Shelter Animals Count. “Adopting a pet is the most sustainable and socially-conscious choice, which also helps alleviate the shelter crisis, rather than compounding it.”

“For those not ready to adopt, fostering is also a wonderful way to help, as it offers animals a break from the shelter environment, and lightens the load for overburdened shelter staff, even temporarily,” Filer added.

In addition, fostering helps dogs get adopted. Recent research funded by Maddie’s Fund found that brief outings and temporary foster stays increased dogs’ likelihood of adoption by five and more than 14 times, respectively.

As for the ages, sizes, breeds and types of dogs entering shelters, people may discover options they never thought they’d find available for adoption. SAC recently surveyed shelters and rescues to get a snapshot of what kinds of dogs are coming through their doors. With 314 responses from organizations across 45 states, nearly 80% of respondents said people would probably be surprised by the types of dogs coming into their organizations.

People who haven’t checked out adoptable pets recently may not realize that more and more small-breed dogs, puppies, purebreds and “designer dogs” like doodles, oodles, and poos, as well as dozens of other non-poodle combinations, are arriving at shelters for the same reasons that other dogs do. So, people looking to bring a pet home for the holidays should check their local shelters and rescues, and adoption databases like AdoptAPet.com, which also features available pets for rehoming by individuals.

The holidays are a popular period for pet acquisition, so animal advocates encourage a shift away from buying from pet shops, breeders and online sellers, and toward adopting dogs and puppies from shelters and rescues who are desperate for adopters. Due to the increasing trend of home breeding as a side hustle, and the ongoing issue of puppy mills, many shelters are not only receiving people’s pups they purchased and can’t keep, but also leftover puppies that breeders can’t sell, and adult breeder dogs that are no longer wanted or needed.

➡️ Nearly 90% of survey respondents said they’re receiving puppies from their communities.

➡️ More than 60% of respondents said they’re receiving doodles and other intentional mixed breeds.

➡️ Almost half (44%) said they’re getting more purebreds.

➡️ More than half (54%) said they’re getting “leftover” puppies/litters from breeders who can’t sell them.

➡️ Nearly 60% said they’re receiving surrenders (or surrender requests) of dogs that people say they paid a lot of money for and now can’t afford to keep.

We just got news that our vet is taking a month off - A well deserved vacation! - So it looks near impossible for us to reach our goal of 1000 animals speutered this year. However, we did make it to the number ‼️968‼️ So close! Still so many prevented litters! We are still extremely proud of our number and you all for fixing your animals! This year we have also rescued or rehomed 75-100 dogs and puppies and 40-50 cats and kittens. We have assisted several other pet owners improving living situations of their pets whatever that may be. We will do a post a little closer to the end of the year for a look back at this year in spay and neuter and rescue, but for now, please enjoy this post highlighting some of our best moments! Join us in this celebration of ❗️968❗️ animals speutered this year on our transport!!!! Thank you all!! 🐶 🐱 ❤️

I know this is a long shot but is there anybody out there that would be willing to foster this dog and help him learn to trust again. He’s had a hard time being drug around and survived a fire and now his owner has went to jail. He is sweet as can be but acts like he’s kind of afraid and will cow down. We will furnish food and pay for all vetting and feel confident we can get him in a good rescue once he’s vetted. If so please reach out to me because as if now he’s in the city shelter where he will get no walks and only human contact will be when he gets fed. Please call me if you can help 4235969977

Newborn at home so the dog has to go .
For those who give up their dogs when they have a baby, I'm posting this photo of a family whose 15-year-old Jack Russel Terrier is treated as one of the children (because he was their first child) and who is the protector of his two human brothers and sisters.
Never use the excuse that you had to let your dog go because you have a baby in the family and the doctor advised you blah blah blah and other lame excuses.
Never abandon your pets. They are family 😍

EMERGENCY FOSTER NEEDED

Yesterday we had Daisy spayed and got a second opinion on her leg.

If you don’t remember Daisy was a stray dog down on slygo by the interstate. I (Audray) got a trap through donations and trapped her. The orginal vet confirmed that she had most likely been hit by a car and had an old fracture from months ago that had healed over. If you look on the picture of her X-ray you can see what looks like a splinter from the bone sticking into her muscle. Our vet yesterday confirmed that it’s most likely causing her a lot of pain (imagine if you had a bone splinter on your femur sticking into your muscle.. ouch!) on top of that he confirmed the torn ACL in her knee which cost anywhere from 2500-5000 to repair. He suggested amputation and after serious consideration that is the route I am going to go with her.

Before she has the surgery I need to find her a foster. I’d like this foster to be someone who stays home a lot. She doesn’t like being alone and gets scared easily. It takes her about a week to warm up to new surroundings. So she needs about a week before surgery to get comfortable in your home and then a few weeks after the surgery to stabilize, heal and get comfortable without her leg. It’s important the foster is home a lot and that it is somewhat of a quite home. She just wants to be a couch potato with you and snuggle up in bed.

⭐️Please help us find a foster so Daisy no longer has to suffer⭐️

She deserves so much more than the life that was handed to her.
