We had a fantastic weekend at our AEL show! The show itself was yesterday but our prep started mid morning Saturday as the team helped pack for and haul 4 of our horses over to Harmony to school and remain onsite Saturday night. This was a great opportunity for our team members to learn the horsemanship that goes into preparing for an away show from preparing feed, packing tack, blankets, and other essentials, and caring for the horses offsite.

On show day our horses stepped up to the challenge of having unfamiliar riders in an unfamiliar setting and assisted several of those riders in winning their classes❤️.

Our riders had a wonderful show, securing Reserve Championship and improving their scores from the last show. We also learned a lot and came away with some great feedback and homework from our judge!

Thank you to Beth Blackwell Sheely for judging, to Stacey Harmony Equestrian Collins for co-hosting, and to all of the riders, parents, and staff for making it such a successful weekend.

Despite the polar vortex, we have a lot going on at EE! Our next AEL show is this Sunday when it will actually be above freezing 🙂.

We also still have slots open for our upcoming horsemanship classes. This is a great “get ready to ride” opportunity, a way to increase your horsemanship knowledge while taking lessons, or a wonderful introduction to horses!

So excited to have my riders hear from our special guest speaker tonight:

Amy Gibbs has been a licensed physical therapist for 19 years. After 15 years in a traditional clinic setting, Amy opened her own business, Be Balanced Physical Therapy, PLLC to specialize primarily in helping equestrians. She works one on one with riders to give them accurate, customized care, combining both off horse and on horse fitness programs allowing them to see results more quickly. she travels around the country, providing in person clinics and travels regionally in the northwest to support riders at shows. Having guest lectured at both WSU and USU, National Athletic Trainer Association Conference, and other organizations such as the National MS Society, and most recently the USEA Annual conference, she has evolved into a keen educator that can communicate effectively and clearly with patients. This allows them to understand their physical issues , address them through live or virtual sessions and achieve excellent results whatever their goals may be. By helping riders improve their core control, balance, reaction times and endurance, each person rides more effectively, and improves their position and safety as well.

We had another great bunch of lessons today dialing things back to save the wear and tear on the horses in these temps and focusing on their fitness with a few corrective exercises to help strengthen the pelvic stabilizing muscles, increase symmetry, body control, and proprioception. Tomorrow we are taking it inside and have a very special guest speaker who I reconnected with during my Trainer Symposium last year. She will be doing a Zoom call to help focus on equestrian fitness. I am very excited to be able to share her knowledge with my riders 🙂. Stay tuned!

As we wrap up this year at Empowered Equestrian I want to share some of my favorite memories and highlights from 2024:

I attended the Trainer Symposium East with Julie Winkel and Linda Allen at Oldfields.

We welcomed several new faces (both equine and human) to the farm.

We hosted two in-house shows and participated in several off-site shows.

We ran two sessions of summer camp.

Vita gave birth to Moose who was awarded Gold Medal Foal status and found an excellent home with an FEI dressage rider.

We partnered with Botetourt Parks and Recreation to implement a new horsemanship program and successfully completed the first session.

I obtained my USHJA Trainer Credential.

We joined and competed in 2 AEL competitions taking home Reserve and Champion and are excited to continue the season.

Britney and I attended the Julie Winkel clinic at Oldfields.

Thank you to all of the horses, riders, and parents who contribute to the success of Empowered Equestrian! We are looking forward to 2025 and are excited to continue growing our programs!

This past weekend we celebrated the completion of our first Hands on Horsemanship program! We’ve received really positive feedback and are excited to offer another session starting in February with several time options available.

Our 8-week horsemanship program for kids aged 7 to 18 offers a fun and social introduction to the world of horses, where no prior experience is necessary. Participants will learn the fundamentals of horse care, including grooming, feeding, and basic handling, while also building a meaningful connection with these gentle animals. Through hands-on activities, interactive lessons, and group exercises, kids will gain confidence and develop new skills in a supportive and engaging environment. This program is perfect for those looking to make new friends, explore the outdoors, and discover the joys of working with horses.

Day 2 of the Julie Winkel clinic was incredible and we focused on rhythm, reviewed the sequence of footfalls for all of the gaits, and Julie shared her method for counting to jumps which is one, two, one, two then three strides out she says “ready to jump”. We had an opportunity to practice it for an entire course and it made a huge difference both in terms of keeping a steady pace but also in approaching the jump with the full intention of getting to the other side. I’m so excited to share this method and everything else we learned this weekend with my students! Vita improved so much over the 2 days and tried her heart out for me. She gave me back the wings I’ve been missing❤️. Britney and Arty also had a fantastic day with great improvement on Arty waiting and reading the jumps, becoming more consistent with their lead changes, and increased confidence over some different jumps. A massive thank you to Julie Winkel and Amy Phillips for putting on another amazing clinic!

We had a great first day at the Julie Winkel clinic hosted by Oldfields Riding! Julie focused on straightness by stepping out and looking in through the turns, helping our horses become more balanced. Vita and Arty both handled everything in stride and had some beautiful moments. We are excited for the 2nd day!
