Iโ€™m often asked how to ease a new puppy into a safe sleep and rest space. I prefer an exercise pen (x-pen), but these tips work beautifully for crate users too.

Inside the pen, I create a small, calm โ€œpuppy studioโ€ with:

โ˜† Waterproof pad for floor
โ˜† Cozy bedding ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
โ˜† A little play area ๐ŸŽพ
โ˜† Fresh water๐Ÿ’ง
โ˜† A p*e pad on the opposite side at night (just in case)๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿšฝ

The pen stays closed when we're busy and open when we can supervise. At night, itโ€™s placed right next to our (Murphy) bed so I can comfort the pup with my hand and hear if she needs to potty. This closeness helps build confidence and reduces anxiety. โ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿ™Œ

If you plan to crate train, simply attach a crate to the x-pen - with the door open - so your puppy can explore it freely and form positive associations. ๐Ÿ˜€

With routine and consistency, most puppies settle very quickly.

Right after lunch today, Mama Rayney slipped out through the doggie doorโ€ฆand her 9 pups surprised me by deciding to follow! At 4.5 weeks old, this is a big step in their environmental confidence and problem-solving skills. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿค“

Using a doggie door is actually a Puppy Culture-style challenge...it asks the pups to navigate something new, push through a moving surface, and build resilience through their own choice to try.

I helped by holding the flap open to reduce the weight and make that first attempt less intimidating. The goal is never to force - just to make the challenge achievable and let the puppies do the rest. ๐Ÿ’ชโค๏ธ

One by one, they toddled through after their mama. Maple ๐Ÿ’› took her time and was the last to go, but with some gentle coaxing and the lighter flap, she worked it out beautifully. Her determination was such a sweet reminder that confidence grows best when we supportโ€”not rushโ€”the process. ๐Ÿ™Œ โœจ๏ธ

These babies continue to amaze me every single day! ๐Ÿฅน

At 4ยฝ weeks, we begin Powering Up the Clickerโ€”a Puppy Culture step where puppies learn that click = reward. Before the clicker marks behaviors, we first build a positive association by clicking and immediately offering a tiny treat.

Today we used ground hamburger as their novel, high-value reward, and they loved it. This early work builds confidence, focus, and sets the stage for future training. โœจ๏ธ

And of courseโ€”our 8-week-old girl, River, joined in the fun and had her own individual practice session, too. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

(And grandpa Duke had to sneak in for a treat!)
