๐Ÿ’œ Mabel needs a home! ๐Ÿ’œ

Available with or without her June 23 c**t, Mabel is about 7 or 8 yrs old and is looking for a person who can teach her how to be a solid equine citizen. She and her herdmates were found eating out of a dumpster behind a gas station in Nogales in July and now needs a cushy landing where she can continue her training. Mabel is currently halter broke and will stand at liberty for grooming, but she does not know how to pick up her feet, tie, load, or anything else. She did well for her vet exam, though! There is a possibility Mabel was bred on her foal heat since there were a couple studs and c**ts running with them.

Her c**t can either be weaned and retained or go with her to her new home. Hank was born around June 7th and is easy to catch, working on leading like a gentleman (currently leading like a spaz), ties, loves grooming, and picks up his feet.

Mabel does not currently require any carrots in order to go to her new home, but adopters will be vetted ๐Ÿฅ•

Located in Tucson, AZ but can be hauled to southern CA for a small fee.

~~~ADOPTED!~~~
๐Ÿฉท Dream ๐Ÿฉท
"Buddys Dream"
Grey OTTB mare
Foaled 3/8/07
JC Registered but papers lost
16.1 hh
Dream is a spicy Thoroughbred mare looking for her forever home! She would make someone a good walk-only, walk + light trotting arena or trail horse (not sound for prolonged exercise), or even a great broodmare! Dream prefers being ridden western more than English ๐Ÿค
Dream does have some arthritis from an old injury in her left front knee which limits her range of motion as well as some thickening in her right hind pastern. She may be able to perform better while on a joint supplement like OsteoMax, but unfortunately we do not have the resources to try it out on her.
Dream is a brave girl and will conquer any obstacle you put in front of her including bridges and tarps! She is easy to catch, leads well, stands tied at a hitching post or cross ties, easy to pick feet, is good for the farrier and vet, bathes, clips, lunges on a line or in a round pen, and is very responsive under saddle.
๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿฉท Auction girls update!
Dr Jen, our amazing veterinarian, was out this morning to examine Mabel, Hank, and Annabelle.
Hank is a spicy little bo**er and is looking ~amazing~ so no one is really worried about him ๐Ÿ˜‚
Mabel and Annabelle on the other hand, while they look significantly better than they did when we pulled them from auction about a month ago, Dr Jen and I believe it is likely that both Mabel and Belle could be PREGNANT! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿซ
I will try to find out more information on the stallion that was running with the herd since he is supposedly a well bred Quarter Horse, but in the mean time, the girls will need even more hay, grain, and supplements to get them into good health!
โค๏ธ THANK YOU, DONORS! โค๏ธ
We so so so appreciate everyone who has donated to EIRR recently, especially since the arrival of the new auction horses. We got a ton of Nutrena Mare & Foal, GutX, psyllium and dewormer! Right now, the things we need the most are electrolytes and hay pellets! We have been mixing all the goodies into hay pellets to get the auction horses to eat everything since grain still smells so foreign to them and we've been going through electrolytes like candy because of this heat! ๐Ÿฅต
If anyone is making a trip to Tractor Supply or CAL Ranch this week, we would love it if you could pick up some electrolytes, hay pellets, shampoo, and wood pellet bedding for the crew! You're welcome to either snag it and drop it off at the barn or purchase it and we can pick it up from the store. The items pictured are from Tractor Supply, but CAL Ranch should have electrolytes, pellets, and shampoo as well. The pellet bedding is specific to TSC though.
We are a 501(c)3 status non-profit, so all donations are eligible for tax write-offs! โœ๏ธ
Please contact us if you'd like to pay our farrier, vet, or barn owner directly for some of the costs.
The auction horses are making progress!
๐Ÿ’œ Mabel finally accepted a halter yesterday through a little combo of light pressure and release plus positive reinforcement when she chose to stay near me.
๐Ÿงก Hank is doing beautifully with his training - he enjoys touch everywhere (typical itchy baby!), allows me to pick up all of his feet, and we are starting to lead at liberty for scratches rewards.
๐Ÿฉท Annabelle still doesn't feel comfortable with anyone touching her, but she has decided that the hay pellets aren't too bad, and eating out of the bucket isn't as scary as she thought it would be!
Once Mabel masters leading at liberty for pellet rewards, we will introduce light pressure on the lead rope so that when she's ready to be walked out of her stall, we have a fallback option in case she gets distracted or spooks and decides something else is more important than following Emma!
We keep all of our training as force free as possible with an emphasis on positive reinforcement. For horses that have undergone a lot of trauma in their lives, it is important to make sure they don't feel threatened and stay as comfortable as we can keep them during training sessions ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿด
If you'd like to help support these horses during this critical period in their lives, donations can include any of the following items:
- board ($250/mo per stall)
- hay ($21.50-$26/bale)
- Bermuda/Alfalfa pellets (Ametza, Sacate, or Dumor)
- psyllium pellets (ranges depending on bucket size)
- salt licks (start at $6) or loose table salt ($1.50 or so per can, one can last 2 weeks)
- Electrolytes (Apple-A-Day or Farnam)
- farrier care ($50 per trim)
๐Ÿ–ค R.I.P. Mesquite (Skeeter) ๐Ÿ–ค
He got more love in the last 8 days than he probably had in his entire life. We don't know what he went through before we rescued him at auction last weekend, but we suspect chronic dehydration and malnutrition played a part in what we assume was a ruptured torsion colic. Unfortunately, he wouldn't have even made it to surgery, so we decided to let him go while he was surrounded by people who cared so much about him ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿด๐ŸŒˆ
Donations made since our last post went towards administering IV fluids, his euthanasia, and removal.
Update 3:35pm - we elected to euthanize due to his high pain level. Rest in peace, Mesquite โค๏ธ
๐Ÿ’ฅ URGENT: Skeeter needs our help! He was showing signs of some minor colic this morning and then seemed better, but our vet arrived just as he started to decline again - she is recommending either hospitalization or euthanasia ๐Ÿ’”
Currently, we have not received enough donations to afford hospitalization for him, so we are seriously considering letting him pass over the rainbow bridge before he suffers any more ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ
๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’™ Earlier this week, we tested out Dream's feelings about kids during our summer camp, and it wasn't horrible! Lol ๐Ÿ˜… The boys really liked her, but she made it clear standing still, no matter who's on her, is not her jam!
We will continue to evaluate her likes and dislikes over the next couple of months to see what kind of job would suit her the best, and then she will become available for adoption! Stay tuned for more updates on her!
In the mean time, please keep in mind that just because some of the horses we get in to the rescue are in good body condition, doesn't mean their minds are also in good condition. We specialize in rehabilitating horses dealing with past traumas and preventing those experiences from manifesting as behavioral issues. These horses need just as much love, compassion, as support as the horses that have been physically neglected โค๏ธ
For Dream, donations can include any of the following items:
- board ($250/mo per stall)
- hay ($21.50-$26/bale)
- Nutrena SafeChoice Senior LM (~$25 for a 50 # bag)
- farrier care ($50 per trim)
- Mad Barn Magnesium Oxide ($8 for 1kg + shipping)
- GutX ($113 for a 4 month supply)
โค๏ธ We have names! โค๏ธ
After *lots* of spreadsheets and voting, crossing out, and rewriting, below are our new arrivals' official names:
๐Ÿ’œ Mare: "Mabel"
๐Ÿงก Little C**t: "Hank"
๐Ÿฉท Filly: "Annabelle" (bay)
๐Ÿ’™ Big C**t: "Mesquite" (black)
We had some other names picked out originally, but they were based on the idea that both females were a little mean and the baby c**t might not make it, but they've since calmed down and everyone is doing well so far! One of our donors pointed out that if we give the girls spicy names, we would always see them as spicy, but if we give them sweet names, they would end up being kinder creatures ๐Ÿฅฐ
๐Ÿ’œ Mabel is curious and has let me pet her whole body, but she shies away from the halter, so we will start using hay pellets to create a positive association and reward her for allowing the halter to get closer to her and touch her body.
๐Ÿงก Hank walks away if I approach him while standing, but he is all about the cuddles if he's already laying down.
๐Ÿฉท Belle is still under the impression that humans are the absolute worst and has about a 4 ft flight radius.
๐Ÿ’™ Mesquite (Skeeter)'s foster family says he is sweet and progressing nicely during his training sessions!
We are a 501(c)3 status non-profit, so all donations are eligible for tax write-offs! โœ๏ธ
๐Ÿ‘‡ Name Suggestions! ๐Ÿ‘‡
Everyone seems to be settling in okay! The babies have been napping most of the day - it's obvious they're completely exhausted and have been in survival mode for quite some time. The suckling c**t got curious this morning and Mom wasn't too against it like she was yesterday. The filly still has her guard up, though. โค๏ธ
We do need names for these sweethearts as well! One dark bay mare, her chestnut c**t, bay filly, and dark bay/black c**t (not pictured). Drop your name suggestions in the comments!
Donations can include any of the following items:
โœจ๏ธToday was bittersweet. We ended up rescuing one mare and her baby, one filly, and one c**t. We are unsure of their ages at this time since they do not trust people, but we will keep everyone updated as we learn more about them!
There were two other mare/foal pairs, 3 other weanlings, a TB mare and her long yearling filly that we were unable to help. We do know a few of them went to good homes, but there were kill buyers present, so the ones that had some medical issues may not get the opportunity to meet a kind human โค๏ธ
The story we were told was that these horses were living behind a gas station in Nogales, eating out of a dumpster. They were seized by the USDA, so we can only imagine the scene where these babies came into the world.
Below is what we spent on bail:
$600 for the mare and her c**t
$450 for the bay filly
$350 for the black c**t
We wish we could have saved more, but horse care is expensive, and we struggle as it is to find funding for the horses already in our care ๐Ÿ’”
๐Ÿ’œ Welcome Dancer! ๐Ÿ’œ
That's right, we took in another horse this week! Dancer is a handsome 11 yr old Al-Marah bred Arabian gelding who was surrendered to us by a very loving family. Unfortunately, they could not work through his behavioral issues, but he will spend the next few months with us undergoing mental and physical evaluations to see if we can get to the bottom of these issues and see if we can figure out what kind of life he would enjoy ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿด
Stay tuned for new fundraisers happening soon!
๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿฉท Dream update! She has really bonded to Brooke, so they have been working together in the arena a little bit every day to maintain a more relaxed mentality under saddle. It may not seem like much, but it took us a while to get Dream comfortable with going up to the arena and walking around the entire arena, even while using +R. They had to start with just walking in circles near the gate, then following me while I rode a different horse, and now they are able to walk and trot around the whole arena on their own! I am so happy with the progress they are making together and can't wait to see them continue to improve! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿด
