After 54 years in the same location, Wiseman Animal Hospital will be moving. Our practice will be merging with Eastside Pet Clinic at 7036 East Broadway. The clinic is across the parking lot from the Gaslight Theater near Broadway and Kolb. Dr. Trueba is looking forward to being associated with Dr. Maria Curtis, and seeing you and your pets there. Of course Erika and Jason will be there as well.

Our last day at this location will be February 24th. We will be moving between February 25th and March 1st. We should be available to see appointments on March 2nd. 520 731 1714 is the clinic phone number. Our regular phone number 520 296 2388, should be working there while we move and after we arrive.

It’s only natural to want to treat your dog to some of your holiday dinner. However, our dog's digestive systems work differently than ours, and there are foods to keep away from your dog this holiday season (and always).

So you feed your dog bones, because the dog likes them and you have fed them a bunch of times and never had a problem. Are you an outdoors person? Go hiking? Ride your horse in the woods? Remember seeing the whole carcass of deer, elk or cow bones? What does that tell you? Coyotes do not eat the bones! Dogs chew bones into chards and those bone shards scrape them from one end to the other. The unlucky ones get a jagged bone caught in the esophagus, and this foreign body must be removed by endoscopy (some are so jammed there that they can not be removed) because surgical removal from the esophagus is almost never possible because it has so much movement that the esophagus heals poorly or not at all.
The bone shards that make it to the stomach are acted on by stomach acid, softening them up to a certain extent. The partially softened shards make it to the colon which sucks water out of the shards, and essentially makes cement out of them. These cement like balls then cause constipation, and the sharp edges continue to scrape the colon. The x ray below shows stool balls which consist of "cement" like bone.
Nothing disturbs a veterinarian or veterinary technician more than being out to dinner and hearing someone at a neighboring table ask for a bag to take the steak bone home for their dog. Remember dog food (not free bones) are a lot cheaper than veterinary care!

Dogs started receiving a vaccine against cancer this week in a clinical trial at UW-Madison. If the vaccine works in dogs, it may not only provide a new strategy for addressing a critical canine health concern, it might also work in people.

TIP: The next 4-6 weeks is mating season for coyotes. Please do not let your dogs out alone. The coyote gets your dog to chase him and then somewhere in the distance the pack waits for your dog. Then the outcome is tragic as they can & will attack/kill your pets (they will easily kill your cats also). Just be aware it can happen to your beloved pet. {Coyote breeding typically peaks in late February and early March, the gestation period averages 58 to 63 days. Male coyotes can become more aggressive during this time of year, the long and short of it all is that coyotes always pose a risk to your dog (and other small pets). That risk increases during mating season.}

Rattlesnake activity will increase for the next month or so, as they hunt for rodents and other food sources in anticipation of their coming inactive period (hibernation). People pulling post rainy period w**ds in flower beds (women) are at high risk this time of year. "Watch where you put your hands". Dogs bitten in the back yard are actually protecting you and your children from being bitten by "ferreting" out the snake, before the snake has a chance to bite his/her family members. Hikers should pay close attention to where they place their feet.
A few snake bite facts:
1) The only antidote for snake bite is antivenin.
2) Even those pets with snake vaccines need antivenin, according to label instructions. Wiseman Animal Hospital does not recommend snake vaccine, and considers it medically illogical.
3) First aid measures, cut and suck, electric shock, and what ever else you may have heard have all been abandoned or debunked by human and veterinary medical science.
4) The best first aid for snake bite is "car keys" see a human emergency room for humans bitten or a veterinary emergency room for pets that have been bitten.
Thank you Brian Mitchell for this great back yard rattlesnake picture.
