We've been seeing people recently talking about how their avoidance trained dog walked right past a rattlesnake and the dogs didn't react or notice! There are many real life scenarios where this may be true to varying degrees, let's look at the why, and some further factors. We have all manner of dogs come through training, all ages, breeds with a range of individual behaviors, but the large majority of dogs tend to respond to avoidance training similarly and show common behaviors. During training you are seeing how your individual dog may present those avoidance behaviors; but it is also up to you after training to continue paying attention to your dogs body language and listening to them, it can help keep you safe as well!
Environmental factors play a role in how your dog is sensing what is around them; is it windy, is it wet or humid, extra hot day? We are teaching your dog in a safe and controlled environment what the scent, sight and sound of a live rattlesnake is, killing that curiosity, so they know what it is when encountered in the real world, but, in order to avoid the rattlesnake, your dog first needs to know it is there. If it is windy, that snake scent is going to be moving around and harder to pinpoint, or maybe the snake stays silent with no buzz, or any number of other scenarios, dogs need to be aware of their surroundings. We use a multi point course set-up to cover the bases best we can, most dogs learn quick and do great with training overall.
We always recommend bringing dogs for a refresh walk through every year, the easiest way to keep the training fresh in your pups mind. Some dogs may not see a rattlesnake in the year past training, a quick reminder of that scent, sight and sound can make all the difference in a real encounter.
We will be with you every step through training and every year past that! Clients are always welcome to reach out anytime, we will do our best to help, whatever the situation. I could go on about avoidance training for a lot longer, but if you ever have questions or concerns, I'm always here to chat!
