With her vast experience in the veterinary world we often assume that Dr Juhl has 'seen it all.' 13 1/2 year old Onnie was here for her senior wellness exam and she decided that the sink in the exam room looked like a cozy spot to snuggle into. Dr Juhl just couldn't stop laughing when she saw the spot that Onnie had picked to rest up. LOL
We recommend biannual wellness exams for our senior pets so that we can monitor their blood pressure and do full blood work to ensure that they remain healthy. And if they choose to cuddle up in the sink while they are in the exam room.......... well, that's just fine with us.

Here is another of our fabulous doctors with her 'true loves.'
Dr Diss has two gorgeous Border Collies, Bosco who's 5 years old and Nova who's 1 year old. Dr Diss loves her 'all action' pups and says there is nothing better than having them join her on all her outdoor adventures. Be it skiing, biking or canoe trips on the Colorado River, they are both there front and centre, having the best time. ❤️ Dr Diss also has a beloved kitty, Tuli who is 9 years old. She wants absolutely nothing to do with all the 'outdoorsy stuff' and stays happily cuddled up at home. LOL

I hope you are enjoying our special Valentines Day series highlighting our Doctor's 'true loves.'
Our wonderful Dr Steinke has three furry Valentines. ❤️ She has had Monty for 3 years, George (the lap dog) for 5 years and sweet Nala has been with Dr Steinke for 12 years, since she was in vet school. Dr Steinke says she loves Nala's independant nature, George for being so loving and affectionate and Monty? Well he's just crazy but she loves him for it. We love when George comes to visit the hospital, being a hound, he announces his arrival very loudly. We always know when George is in the building. LOL

For Valentines Day, here is Dr Hamilton with her 'true love.'
Tequila is a 28 year old African Grey. Dr Hamilton adopted her 5 years ago. She says that she loves how Tequila always keeps her on her toes - sometimes she barks like a dog and sometimes she pretends to answer the phone. Tequila has some pretty good moves too apparently, she particularly likes singing and dancing along to Billy Eilish or the soundtrack to Wicked. ❤️ We can see why she is so loved.

Our Valentines Day series continues.
Here is Dr Ciarniello with her 'true love' Dublin, he's a tri-pawd and a PACC alum. Dr Ciarniello says that Dublin is a goofy boy and the best cuddler. ❤️ He was super supportive when she was going through vet school and he's such a good boy that he even let her practice endless exams and palpations on him when she was training. Dublin has never met someone he doesn't love and Dr Ciarniello says 'he's just the best.' Awwwwww

Happy Valentines Day. Today we are continuing our Valentines Day series highlighting our Doctor's 'true loves.
Dr Juhl has two feline Valentines. Mushka is a 14 year old tri-pawd Maine Coone mix. She is a glorious senior lady who likes to recline in her donut bed. Dr Juhl says she loves that Mushka is such a cuddle bug. ❤️ Cheez It is 1 1/2 year old orange tabby. He was dumped at the front desk here at the hospital in an awful state. He was 2 weeks old, covered in fleas, had ringworm and a severe upper respiratory infection but just look at him now! What a lucky kitty. Dr Juhl says he is a menace, opening doors and cabinets whenever she turns her back but she loves his naughtiness.

Continuing our series for Valentines Day here is another of our Doctors with her 'true love.'
Dr Orsini's family adopted sweet Fenrir a year ago, and he has settled right in and made himself at home. ❤️ Apparently if he thinks you are taking up too much space on the couch he has a very accurate kangaroo kick that he uses to remind you just who's couch it is now. Dr Orsini loves this beautiful fluffy bundle of energy and says her favourite thing about Fenrir is that he is a total social butterfly and wants to greet everyone wherever he goes. That's just adorable.

Here's another of our great doctors sharing their 'true loves' with us for Valentines Day.
Dr Farrell actually has three furry Valentines but only two are in the picture. The missing one is her beautiful cat Nala who has been with Dr Farrell since vet school and loves to try to steal Moms food! The two lovelies in the picture (as you can tell from their bandanas,) are Arnie and Winnie. Arnie and Dr Farrell have been together since 2017 and they are like two halves of a whole. ❤️ Arnie loves nothing more than to cuddle up with his Mom. Winnie is 3 years old and she thinks she is a human, especially when it comes to stealing Moms chair. So Sweet.

We're starting a day early with our Valentines Day series highlighting our Doctor's 'true loves' because we've got lots of Doctors!
Awwwww how adorable are these two? Here is our very own Dr Solis with her 'true love.' ❤️ Ceo is a 1 1/2 year old Mini Aussie and Dr Solis says the thing she loves most about him is that gorgeous Aussie wiggle he does when he's happy or excited. I think those beautiful soulful eyes might also break a few hearts too. Aren't they just picture perfect?

We're a day early but for Valentines Day we thought it would be fun to share some of our Doctor's 'true loves.'
Here is our wonderful Dr Cahill. The two little sweeties sitting on her lap are Nova and Timkin they were fostered by Dr Cahill and while Timkin found his forever home, Nova ended up being a foster fail so she stays with Dr Cahill for ever. ❤️ Next to Dr Cahill is 10 year old Echo and 5 year old Ben. These two cuties are great hiking buddies and Dr Cahill says she loves nothing more than following their wagging tails along the trail. Love, Love, Love.

Rosie, the Pallid Bat came in for her annual wellness exam with Dr Juhl recently. She was a model patient and behaved perfectly for her exam. Dr Juhl palpated Rosie's abdomen, listened to her heart, checked her mouth, examined her wings and gave her a clean bill of health. Rosie is kept on behalf of Arizona Fish and Wildlife as an educational animal. She is not able to be released due to injury and is kept with a special State permit. Pallid Bats are insectivores but they have been known to eat lizards and even small rodents. Unusually, Pallid Bats catch most of their food on the ground rather than in the air. And those gorgeous big ears? They allow this species to hear their preys footsteps on the ground! Thank you, Rosie, for being such a great model.

We are all in love with Miss Moo Berrie, how could we not be? Just look at that sweet little face. Moo Berrie is a 9 week old Pot Bellied Pig and she came in to see us for her first vaccines. Domestic pigs are vaccinated against atrophic rhinitis which is a respiratory disease. She did a great job for her first shot and got lots of cuddles for being so brave.

Meet our Employee of the Month for January. Jackie's title is CSR Supervisor but she does so much more than that. She does all the financial record keeping, creates the monthly schedules for our Doctors (she deserves a medal for that task alone!) Trouble shoots everything from the lights in the parking lot to our answering machines and our printers. Fair to say, she keeps our hospital running. Here are some of the things her coworkers said about her this month - 'She's great at everything,' 'Keeps the hospital running,' 'when I see her, she shines,' 'She's amazing every day,' 'The best at her job and has great hair!' When she's not keeping us running here at Civano she likes to explore Arizona with her husband on their Harley. She's also just got into baking her own sourdough bread. We love you Jackie, thank you for all that you do for us.

It has been hard to escape the news about the surge in Norovirus cases over the past couple of months. We really hope that you have managed to escape actually catching this nasty virus. The specifics of potential transfer of this disease between humans and their dogs and vice versa is not fully known at this time but it does appear that dogs can get sick from infected humans. Dogs can shed human norovirus for at least a week if they come into contact with an infected human so it is important to follow good infection-control practices. Regular hand washing is key, especially after having gone to the bathroom or after picking up after your dog when they have been to the bathroom. If you have any concerns about your pup, please give us a call.

There is no disputing the fact that Tucson, Arizona is a fantastic place to live. However, when it comes to caring for our pets it does present some unique challenges, none of which looms larger in many peoples minds than Valley Fever. Valley Fever is caused by a fungus that is constantly present in the soil. When the wind blows or ground is disturbed in any way, thousands of spores move around in the air. Valley Fever occurs most commonly in dogs, cattle, horses and humans, less often in cats. The symptoms that present vary hugely - coughing, fever, weight loss, lack of appetite, lack of energy, lameness or swelling of limbs, back or neck pain, seizures, swollen lymph nodes, non-healing skin wounds and eye inflammation. We have a blood test that we can run to check for the presence of Valley Fever in your pet and the vast majority of our patients that do test positive respond very well to the medications. So don't stop enjoying the outdoors with your pets, just keep up with your regular vet visits and monitor your pet's health. Our Doctors have a wealth of experience dealing with Valley Fever and are here to help if needed.

Please be aware there has been a recent incident of food items appealing to both wildlife and dogs being laced with poison and scattered in the Pantano Wash between Houghton Road and Old Spanish Trail. There have been numerous coyote and javalina deaths. Sadly pet dogs have also died as a result of ingesting this poison, we are devastated that one of them was a long time and much loved patient of ours. Our amazing team of doctors was able to save another dog that was bought in having ingested this poison. Please avoid this area and keep a close eye on your dogs when out walking with them.

Did you know we have a cat groomer? Kelly grooms both dogs and cats! She is at VCA Civano on Sundays and Tuesdays. We all know how good it feels when someone is brushing our hair, Ivory here clearly feels the same, she enjoyed her groom so much she almost fell asleep towards the end. What a sweet kitty. Please remember, if you would like to book your pet for grooming, we do require that they are up-to-date on their rabies vaccine.
