Some horses leave hoof prints on your heart forever. ❤️

WindStar (Windy) and Jax—the two horses I had the privilege of calling my own. Windy, my fiery Arabian, and Jax, my elegant Saddlebred, each taught me lessons that shaped the horsewoman I am today. Looking back at this old photo reminds me of the deep connection we share with our horses, the trust we build, and the memories that never fade.

No matter how many horses I work with now, these two will always hold a special place in my heart. 🐎✨

Reading a horse’s body language is like piecing together a story. In this moment, this guy was watching me while his herd mate finished the rest of their grain. Let’s break down his cues:

🔹 Ears slightly back but not pinned – He’s aware of his surroundings, likely listening to both me and his herd mate.
🔹 Lowered head and soft eye – He’s calm but maybe a little expectant, possibly hoping for his share.
🔹 Relaxed muzzle, closed mouth – No signs of stress, just quiet observation.
🔹 Messy forelock and bits of hay – Clearly, he’s already had a good meal or a roll!

A classic case of “I see you… but I also see my friend eating without me.” Horses communicate so much through subtle body language—understanding it helps us build better connections!

Why Do Horses Always End Up Eating in the Same Spot? 🤔🐴

You set up perfectly spaced feeding stations—hay over here, hay over there—yet somehow, your horses all pile into one spot like it’s the hottest table at a fancy restaurant. Why?

Because horses are social butterflies! 🦋 They’d rather turn mealtime into a party. In the wild, sticking close to the herd keeps them safe, and even though they’re not dodging predators in your pasture, old habits die hard.

And let’s be real—there’s always that one horse who claims the “best seat in the house,” and the others either want to stay close to the VIP or avoid drama altogether. Who knew hay could be so political?

It’s totally normal! Just make sure there’s enough hay to go around and plenty of room so every horse can enjoy their snack without stress.

🌨️ Winter Challenges in the Willamette Valley 🌨️

The cold snap is here, and livestock owners across the Willamette Valley are facing one of winter’s toughest challenges: keeping water from freezing. ❄️

As a caretaker, I had to think on my feet to solve frozen hoses and water buckets, ensuring the troughs stayed filled and ready for the animals. From de-icing strategies to troubleshooting on the spot, it’s all part of the job when you care for livestock in unpredictable weather.

While out on my morning walk today, I had a surprise visitor—a horse approached me right from its yard! Both gates were wide open, and he was headed for the road to say hello.

After a few unsuccessful attempts to reach the owners, a helpful neighbor was able to text them, and I took the opportunity to put this friendly guy safely back in his stall.

Moments like this remind me of how special the bond with horses is. When they feel comfortable enough to approach you, it’s truly rewarding. At Walsh Equine Services, it’s all about trust, care, and keeping our equine friends safe and happy.

🐴 Winter Water Tips from Walsh Equine Services 🌬️

🤜 Punch a hole in the ice to ensure access without freezing over.
🧊 Avoid breaking all the ice, as it might lead to complete freezing.
💧 Refill water without covering the existing ice surface.
🥵 Consider using heated troughs for consistent water availability.
✔️ Check water sources regularly to prevent ice buildup.

🪣 Remember, a horse needs about 5-10 gallons of water daily.
