Knowing how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on your pet can mean all the difference. If you notice your pet is choking, it may mean your dog or cat is struggling with a blockage in their throat. Obstructions can happen when pets bite off more than they can chew, a piece of a toy gets lodged in their throat, or they’re eating too quickly. Dehydration seems easy to fix, but it’s not always as simple as just giving your pet water. Depending on the severity, they may need IV fluids to replenish the loss safely.

Common signs of dehydration include:

🟣 Dark urine
🟣 Dry gums and nose
🟣 Low energy
🟣 Panting
🟣 Refusal to eat
🟣 Thick saliva and sticky gums

Certain foods, medications, environmental elements, and ingredients in grooming products used on pets can spark an allergic reaction. Look out for signs like swelling, hives, itchiness, watery eyes, red skin, fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. If you believe your pet is having an allergic reaction to something, it’s best to bring them to your local animal urgent care or animal hospital as soon as possible.

An infectious disease refers to an illness caused by bacteria or viruses. Just like us, when our pets have an infection, they need prompt medical attention to feel better. Our internal medicine services are available Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., by appointment. We're here to help!

Arthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis, refers to the inflammation of one or multiple joints. Affecting both dogs and cats of any breed, arthritis can be very painful putting limits on your pet’s quality of life. Symptoms of arthritis include reluctance to move or jump, limping, trouble standing, difficulty with stairs, and swollen joints. But help is available! If you're concerned about your pet's mobility, visit your primary care veterinarian for an exam and to learn more.

Blood disorders are examples of conditions that our internal medicine team helps diagnose and treat. Common blood disorders that affect pets include:

🩸Anemia: blood can’t carry oxygen properly
🩸Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC): uncontrolled bleeding
🩸Hemophilia A: spontaneous bleeding
🩸Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP): the immune system attacks platelets
🩸Von Willebrand Disease (vWD): makes it difficult for blood to clot

If your pet is showing signs of a swollen abdomen, it could be a sign that they might be suffering from a heartworm infection, inflammation, or it could indicate bloat also known as gastric dilatation volvulus which is life-threatening if not treated promptly. Either way, it’s important for your pet to be checked out by a veterinary professional as soon as possible to get them the care they need.

We care Wednesday!

Meet Seven!🐾💜 Seven presented to our facility for bladder stones and a urethral prolapse. He was hospitalized for one month due to kidney disfunction. Once stable he was had a plethora of procedures such as a cystotomy, neuter, perineal urethrostomy, and soft palate resection with our surgical department Veterinary Surgical Specialists . Seven is definitely a handful according to his mom but he is doing great and thriving with his family!

Meet Gabi! Gabi has been with our team for a little over 2 years and is our lead patient care registered veterinary technician. Gabi helps oversee all the hospitalized patients during their stay. Gabi stated, "I love patient care and am so passionate about what I do because I get to tend patients and love on them while they are recovering" Fun fact about Gabi is she loves to be creative and find new activities outside of work. She loves spending her time being a Disney mom and hanging with her friends!
