Clear communication, solid expectations, and a balance between boundaries and freedom.
From a young age I was in awe of the human/canine relationship. I loved training early on, and would work with our family’s and friend’s dogs, soaking up any information on canines and training that I could find. As I grew older, my love of dogs grew with me, and once I stepped into sled dog racing you couldn’t get me to shut up about it. Dogs, dogs, dogs. All the time. I’m still in awe years later, after almost eight years racing sled dogs, and taking a dive into professional dog training.
The more I learned, the more it became apparent to me how much miscommunication there is between people and their dogs. People and families that don’t understand why they have a dog that’s chaotic, challenging, reactive, a nuisance to live with; you name it.
I owe dogs a great deal. They helped me find who I am, and continue to challenge me and push my edges. Advocating for my dogs in public spaces, taught me to advocate for myself, which lead to me being a more grounded person in other facets of my life, and ultimately a happier person. They are incredible teachers and valuable friends. For all they’ve taught me, now it’s time to teach others how to bridge that gap in communication and understanding.
