Why do I have to do the groundwork Mr. Dane?

I can’t tell you how often I hear this. It is the first step to great Horsemanship.
Groundwork is a useful way of establishing communication and connection with your horse. Working with the horse from the ground gives the rider the chance to visually assess the horse’s natural movement patterns without the influence of the rider on board. This can provide useful information that can then be used to help formulate work in-hand, and under saddle, to improve a horse’s way of going.

The horse and Rider can establish trust through groundwork and set useful boundaries around personal space, which can make the horse safer to be around. It can also be used as part of a training or rehabilitation.

Specific exercises such as lateral work can be worked from the ground when teaching new movements, such as turning on the forehand and leg yielding. When introduced to the horse from the ground, it allows the horse to build the necessary strength for the movement without the weight on a rider.

It’s also about safety. Safe and smart groundwork can help build the foundation for a confident, well-behaved horse.

By working with your horse from the ground, you can establish a foundation of mutual respect and communication that will translate into the saddle.
