Eggbinding can be a life-threatening condition in chickens when an egg gets stuck in their reproductive tract. Spotting the signs early and acting quickly can save your hen. Here's what to watch for and how to respond:

Signs of an egg-bound chicken:
Straining: Frequent attempts to lay an egg without success.
Lethargy: Sitting still or appearing weak.
Tail Position: Constantly lowered tail or difficulty holding it up.
Swollen Abdomen: Noticeable bloating near the vent.
Loss of Appetite: Refusal to eat or drink.
Difficulty Walking: A penguin-like stance due to abdominal pain.

How to prevent eggbinding:
Balanced Diet: Ensure your hens have a diet rich in calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D.
Access to Sunlight or Supplements: Vitamin D helps with calcium absorption.
Hydration: Always provide fresh, clean water.
Stress-Free Environment: Reduce overcrowding and stressors that may impact egg-laying.

How to help an egg-bound hen:
Warm Bath: Place your hen in a warm bath (95–100°F) for 15–20 minutes. The heat relaxes muscles.
Lubrication: Gently apply a small amount of vegetable or coconut oil around the vent.
Isolate & Observe: Keep her in a warm, quiet space. A heating pad under soft bedding can help.
Seek Veterinary Help: If the egg doesn’t pass within 24 hours, contact a vet immediately.
