Monday Myth Buster: ‘Tired Dogs are Good Dogs’

You’ve probably heard the phrase “a tired dog is a good dog”, but that’s not always true. A physically exhausted dog isn’t necessarily well-behaved—they can actually become overtired and cranky, just like kids!
Instead of just trying to wear them out, try adding mental stimulation to their routine. A balanced dog isn’t just tired—they’re fulfilled.

🎶 Isn't she lovely...... 🎶

Stormy is Draco's softer half. She is extremely shy and quite resistant to new things, situations, and people. She is the first to run and hide to avoid conflict, but also the most desperate to create space when presented with no other options.

After working really hard, we seek to balance those sessions with loose leash walks on down the levy and in the pasture to decompress from all the tough learning.

Draco the Doberman is here to address in-home fighting with his sister and littermate (Stormy). Both pups are still quite young, but are incredibly over aroused with undertones of fear and anxiety.

As we exit the first few days of decompression, I'm starting to see incremental progress on their stress levels which means we are getting ready to learn some really cool stuff.

They will be here for a few weeks and they have a LONG way to go before they are ready to reintegrate with one another and their housemates. For now, we celebrate all the baby steps.

Monday Myth Busting! 🐶

Myth: "Dogs feel guilty when they do something wrong."

Truth: That "guilty" look is actually a response to your body language and tone! Dogs don’t feel guilt the way humans do, but they are experts at reading our emotions. Instead of assuming they "know better," focus on clear communication and setting them up for success.

The Kings County 4H Dog Project kiddos got a special grooming and care presentation from the owner of Itchy Pooch, Shamra Durham.

There is so much more that goes into proper grooming and care than most people realize and we are so grateful that Shamra was willing to share her time and talents with our young handlers in training.

THANK YOU SHAMRA!

Luna, the Labradoodle has come a long way in the last few weeks! A very willing yet insecure dog, Luna came to me with no food or play drive and would shut down at the slightest bit of leash or spatial pressure. She bolted through doorways to avoid being in close proximity. She would zigzag on the leash like a frantic rabbit. Auditory interrupters were overwhelming and any attempt at using tactile interruption would send her to the moon.

All dogs thrive with healthy relationships, but a for a dog like Luna, an unstable relationship meant zero progress could be made. It also meant that the first part of her training was essentially put in slow motion; trust and confidence are critical.

It is important to consider what the dog needs in order to find success and build confidence. Today Luna has all but mastered her basic foundations, is able to enjoy off leash privileges and affection without panicking over the simple pressures of the world or feeling the need to frantically jump all over everyone when overwhelmed.

Working with Luna was a good reminder that sometimes the dogs you think will be easy to train, aren’t & how the difficult dogs will always remind you that your toolbox will never be completely full.

We love what we do.

My name is Heather Thomas and I have been working with and training dogs since I was 15. Anyone who knows me will say I am absolutely, positively, crazy, in LOVE with dogs! This love for dogs and helping others led me to take the leap and open the Long Dog Inn in the summer of 2019. What an amazing journey the past few months have been! I could not imagine the joy of caring for other’s dogs would bring to me and my family, but here I am living my best life.

What’s next? While I may not be in a place to provide training services full-time, I am fortunate to be surrounded by a wonderful dog training community that allows me to continue my training pursuits in hopes that someday that dream would become a reality. For now, I enjoy teaching new tricks and reinforcing obedience skills to my current clients while they stay with me.
