WE'RE BACK!
The Official Page for The Red Comb Ladies Society Urban Chicken Farm!
From everyday living and egg production to growth and meat processing, we'll keep you filled in on it all!
WE'RE BACK!
Here's some cute silkie mixes for you to enjoy! Just a week old and looking cute as a button!
Looking to start being more self sustaining? Let us help! Looking for winter chicks!? We can possibly help you with that as well!
May 16th, hens from this hatch will be laying age and ready to find new homesteads to spread their love. They are all Silkie/silkie crosses so, we anticipate smaller, friendly birds who lay medium sized eggs.
Now we wait and see who is a roo and who will be a hen!
Sloane is checking up on our freshly hatched quails! Up next, ducks (should hatch this weekend)!
2 minutes of hatching, condensed to 28 seconds! More quail coming our way!
Sorry it's been a while, we've had a lot of great things happening with the coffee shop!
We hatched out a couple quail a few weeks ago and quickly realized, we wanted more so, we bought some eggs and, as per usual, eggs shipped, are eggs most likely not hatching. 20 out of 60 arrived quite cracked (not great packing). Let's see how these 40 do over the next couple of weeks!
We'll keep you updated.
Our ducks have started laying with regularity so, off to sale they go! $2.50/half dozen only at French Creek Coffee and Tea Co. LLC !
Number two came along!!
We have a new addition to our little Homestead! It's sibling will be coming along shortly.
Here come the Quail!
No, we're not that excited for snow! Haha
We're pretty sure we have our first duck egg!
From right to left;
1.6 oz (small)
2.2 oz (XL)
2.8 oz (XL)
3.3 oz (...if it's not a duck, we have a chicken that had some serious labor pains...)
One of our web-footed ladies has decided she prefers to hang out overlooking all of the others! To clip her wings or not...
Mornings 'round here are wonderful!
Tonya and Michael have been working on some other fun projects including making incense cones out of the herbs found around our community!
Dropping off eggs at French Creek Coffee and Tea Co. LLC !
Our ladies have become so used to us, they make it difficult to walk past the fence gate!
Meat birds, egg birds, quacky birds oh my!
August 10th, a derecho or, "Land Hurricane" hit Iowa and devastated an estimated 50% of their crops. Iowa is the #1 producer of corn, soy and eggs.
What that means for America, we lose approximately 14% or 8 million eggs this year.
This is not a call for a shift to more local purchasing of eggs or supplying your own eggs (although ts not a bad idea), no, that would be classless to take advantage of the devastation to promote ones own product.
This is a call to all egg producers that, when egg prices start to climb because of the increase in demand, don't take advantage of the needs of your customers to follow the trend. Remember that eggs are an amazing source of protein and for some families, it is their main source of protein due to the low cost of an egg based meal. Keep your prices steady. Supply and demand should NEVER have a place when it comes to the dietary needs of our customers.
No matter the price of eggs, we will keep our prices where they are. Chicken feed is the only thing that dictates our cost.
Now that we caught your attention with Sloane's chicken insanity, we have a favor to ask of all of you.
We are planning on starting a YouTube channel to chronical our growth, adventures and many projects. We want to make a video that introduces us to everyone and need questions to answer.
So, if you could comment below with a question, we would greatly appreciate the help. They can be questions you are wondering about or, questions that you think we should answer for introduction purposes. We'll let you know as soon as the video posts so you can see the answer to your question (if you don't already know the answer)!
Michael and Patrick finished building our new Bantam coop with plenty of vertical space for them to get up high where they love to be!
Another piece Michael made this time using the wishbone from one of our birds.
Chicken wishbone combined with feathers, Rose Quartz, Jade and Pyrite creating a talisman that brings forth spiritual prosperity. They are said to please the ancestors and bring them closer to us.
We are not fans of letting any part of the chicken go to waste. Whether it be making chicken stock or, like this picture shows, making talismans honoring the Conjure traditions of American folk majic.
This is a protection talisman Michael made using a foot of one of our roosters that "had to go", leather wound with Black Kyanite and Smokey Quartz for additional protections and it now hangs in Tonya's van envoking the ancestors to keep her and the kids safe.
Good Morning!
Michael has been designing and making shirts for all of us to wear! It's been a fun and interesting weekend.
Getting some treats before the storms settles in!
Wearing the new Red Comb Ladies Society shirt, hanging out with our gal Claire!
I p**p breakfast! What's your superpower!?
Looks like we'll have a few new babies joining us tomorrow!
They will be looking for some new homes so, if you know anyone who is looking for some Serama chicks, send them our way!
We'll post pictures as they begin to hatch!
When 12 nesting boxes just isn't enough, institute the buddy system!
We've been doing some upgrades to The Society this past weekend/all week!
This meant setting up a temporary coop with their nesting boxes in the coop which, they didn't like so much.
With the lesser amount of eggs we have been receiving, we assumed that they held off on laying due to the stress of the drastic changes we were making.
NOPE! They found a small hidden corner of an old coop and kept on going! Our ladies are resilient and strong!

There is quite a bit of movement in our Serama eggs! Looking forward to seeing these little ones join the world!
Michael finding new/easier ways to clean the eggs! Thank goodness for the helpful chicken owning community on YouTube!
We added ice cubes to their water and opened up the coop doors to try and beat the heat today (high of 87F from our readings). Thank goodness for shade to cut down on the direct sun!
