Management!
Common questions asked by new puppy owners...
🐾 How do I stop my puppy chasing and biting my kids while they play?
🐾 How do I train my puppy not to dig up the grass?
🐾 How do I teach my puppy not to jump on people/furniture?
🐾 How do I stop my puppy from chewing and running off with items he shouldn’t have?
All these questions equal the same answer;..
MANAGEMENT! 💃🕺😀💪
A key component to raising a well behaved adult dog is managing your puppy’s environment to prevent them from experiencing and rehearsing undesirable habits.
So what does this mean? 👇👇👇
Well, we recently turned the end of our verandah into an outside puppy raising pen area. A safe, comfortable space, close to us, for the puppy to hang out in when we are not training, supervising or playing with her.
✔️ We can give her appropriate items to chew and play with and she can’t race off with the wrong things.
✔️ We can give her a clam shell to enjoy digging in so she doesn’t rehearse destroying the grass.
✔️ We can allow visitors to enter the house without being jumped on and then choose the right time to introduce the puppy to these new people, utilising our ‘sit’ training when she meets them, because we have the time to prepare treats and prep our visitor.
✔️ We have dogs on a bordering property that bark and run up the fence line so this smaller, enclosed space will prevent her from joining in.
✔️ The kids can play in the yard without the puppy chasing and biting them.
Without management, good training can’t happen!
In turn, a space like this helps your puppy to develop their independence because they can’t follow you everywhere you go and get used to you walking around the yard and sometimes out of sight. ✔️✔️✔️
